Prior virtual reality experience and its determinants in educational settings – Insights from secondary data analysis of three previous studies from 2021 to 2025
The effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) to enhance learning has been repeatedly demonstrated empirically. However, the technology is still rarely adopted in educational practice – possibly due to a lack of competencies and operational experience among instructional participants. Since little is known about this issue, a secondary data analysis of three studies (N = 220) conducted between 2021 and 2025 was performed to examine the current level of experience with VR technology among instructional participants along potential determinants. The sample included instructors, facilitators, learners, and participants of VR-based trainings and scientific workshops, of which almost half were from the real estate sector. Results indicate that, on average, instructional participants had limited prior VR experience. Its level was significantly associated with their trait technology acceptance and literacy beliefs, but not with age, gender, control beliefs, or year of survey. These findings underscore the need to foster technology readiness among instructional participants to support the adoption of innovative technologies like VR
Whack-a-Pattern: Fighting Deceptive Patterns With a Hammer
Deceptive patterns are interface design strategies that manipulate users in their decision-making against their best interests. They are common in websites and apps, cost users time, money, or personal data, and often lead to anger and frustration. This makes sensitizing people about them increasingly important. This is the goal of Whack-a-Pattern. Inspired by the classic arcade game Whack-a-Mole, Whack-a-Pattern has players shatter as many deceptive patterns as they can using a (soft) physical hammer while sparing fair designs, in a fast-paced, high-energy game. Whack-a-Pattern approaches the rather dystopian topic of deceptive patterns from a new and irreverent, fun perspective. It is accompanied by a version of the game that can be played online to educate and spark interest in deceptive patterns among the research community and beyond
Tangible Windmills: Exploring Tangible User Interfaces for Urban Infrastructure Planning
Urban planning for renewable energies requires dynamic simulations to visualize complex spatial data to support stakeholders’ decision-making process. Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) support interactions with complex data and provide a physical exploration ground. We designed a prototype for urban planning, integrating tangible windmills reacting in real-time to wind simulation. We conducted a within-subjects study (n=16), testing a tangible prototype against a graphical version. We measured perceived workload and usability, conducted semi-structured interviews, and collected observations during two tasks. Our results show that participants preferred the TUI over the Graphical User Interface (GUI), while reporting significant equivalent mental workloads. The participants felt as effective in the planning tasks with the TUI as with a GUI version. The TUI version enables more intuitive and direct interaction with digital city models, and working haptically was perceived as pleasant. Our findings contribute to the future work of TUI planning tools concerning renewable energy

Beats vs. Talks: Alleviating Virtual Reality Sickness with Music and Podcasts
As virtual reality (VR) technology advances, its potential for widespread application increases. However, VR sickness (VRS) remains a major obstacle to broader adoption. This study investigates the effect of auditory stimuli on VRS during VR experiences. It contrasts the effects of music and podcasts, with a no-sound environment serving as reference. Twenty-three participants experienced three different auditory conditions during a VR roller coaster ride in a randomized, balanced order. VRS was quantified using the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) and physiological data. The SSQ results indicate that music significantly reduced oculomotor disturbances and disorientation, while podcasts had no positive effects. The physiological data demonstrated no significant effects. The majority of participants preferred the music scenario, describing it as relaxing and pleasant. This highlights the potential of music, especially when self-selected and perceived as pleasant, to improve VR experience by significantly reducing VRS. This effect appears to be independent of physiological data
Applying Photogrammetric Methods to Digitalize Key Elements of the Erbil Citadel
Located in the heart of Kurdistan, the Erbil Citadel stands as a testament to human civilization, with archaeological layers revealing over six millennia of continuous habitation. This research employs photogrammetric and 3D scanning technologies to document critical architectural elements—including a historic mosque door, a courtyard, and a tower belonging to a mosque—creating high-resolution digital replicas that capture the citadel's intricate structural and cultural nuances. By transforming physical artifacts into precise digital models, the project not only supports ongoing conservation efforts but also establishes a comprehensive digital archive that will enable scholarly research, virtual exploration, and long-term preservation of this irreplaceable UNESCO World Heritage sit
