The Automotive Manufacturing Industry as a Potential Twin Transformer: A Research-In-Progress Perspective
Twin transformation offers an orchestrated solution to the challenges encountered in dig-italization and sustainability transformation endeavours. Despite current research efforts of this con-cept, there is a scarcity of empirical evidence related to its foreseen benefits, its underlying twin transformation maturity, and its implication among the manufacturing sector. We propose the auto-motive manufacturing industry as a promising case due to its global economic, societal, sustainabil-ity and business model relevance. Therefore, we provide theoretical context of twin transformation, its role in the manufacturing sector as well as in the automotive manufacturing industry. Addition-ally, we pair it with our ongoing research based on an echeloned design science research, including a preliminary problem analysis, and highlight potential future research directions on twin transfor-mation
The digital transformation presents industrial companies in the mobility sector with the challenge of aligning their services more closely with customer needs. Traditional mobility providers must transform themselves into mobility service providers to meet the requirements of networked and shared mobility. However, existing connected mobility offers, Mobility as a Service, show deficits in consistently implementing customer orientation. Therefore, this paper identifies requirements for the design of Mobility as a Service offerings that achieve a high level of customer acceptance. The focus is on identifying divergent customer preferences and the ideal type of bundling of mobility services. To this end, a conjoint analysis based on data from 503 respondents was used to estimate the preference for individual features of a mobility bundle. The results show that the average monthly willingness to pay for a Mobility as a Service bundle is € 208. For all segments, the mobility bundle should include local public transport as a monthly subscription and depending on the segment in question, also bike and car sharing. The high preference for public transport as a component of networked mobility raises the question of whether its operator should take over control of the platform. The paper differs from previous research on Mobility as a Service in Germany because of the mobility services researched and the method of benefit segmentation, based on the utilities, used. The results offer valuable starting points for further research into the business model and ecosystem of connected mobility
The challenges of a successful digital transformation while simultaneously considering sustainable management are causing headaches for companies and organizations. The “twin transformation” approach, which aims to leverage the synergy potential between digital and sustainable transformation, is seen as promising in the literature and initial projects. However, the topic of mobility is often given little to no relevance, although synergies with the topics of sustainability and digitalization exist within a business operation. As part of a case study on the Living Lab of the fim Research Institute for Information Management in Augsburg, this article addresses the outlined gap in how scientific findings can be applied in practice on a small scale to jointly promote e‑mobility, digitalization and sustainability in an organizational context. In the Living Lab, which contains unidirectional and bidirectional charging stations for electric vehicles, the use of self-generated solar power is optimized, taking user requirements into account. The results show that intelligent control of charging processes can reduce operating costs and increase self-consumption and self-sufficiency. The article concludes with best practices and recommendations for action to promote the acceptance and use of e‑vehicles in organizations and to support the integration of mobility and energy strategies
Digital ecosystems, such as the Apple App Store, form a network that integrates various actors, technologies, and services, inter alia aligning them towards a shared value proposition. Joining a digital ecosystem is a far-reaching decision for entrepreneurs. This is especially true for digital entrepreneurs, as digital technologies are a core part of their business concept. An ecosystem can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on the further development of digital startups. In order to weigh up the potential consequences of joining an ecosystem, a large number of possible factors must be taken into account. The problem is that there is currently no structured decision aid for digital entrepreneurs. This makes evaluating the factors a complex task. Our work aims to summarize relevant decision factors and presents them in a structured, easy-to-use form. To this end, we conducted a narrative literature review and identified relevant decision factors. We present those in the form of a business model canvas for simplified practical applicability. To illustrate the application of the decision aid, it is illustrated in a case study using an ecosystem from the smart living sector. The decision aid presented here offers digital entrepreneurs support in the future when deciding to join an ecosystem and to make a well-founded assessment of possible effects. It also makes a valuable contribution to research by systematizing decision factors that were previously considered separately in a comprehensive and clear manner
LLM-Assisted Microservice Performance Modeling
Performance models guide resource-aware design and analysis of microservices, for example, through resource demands in Palladio Service Effect Specifications. Existing derivation methods for microservice performance models rely either on extensive measurements or on manual expert estimates. We present a workflow that leverages large language models (LLMs) to synthesize parametric performance models from textual artifacts such as source code or documentation, as well as from structured user input. We evaluate the approach on an OPC Unified Architecture (UA) server microservice, comparing LLM-generated performance models against measurement baselines on fixed hardware. LLM-generated performance models capture CPU core utilization as a linear function, consistent with measurements. Although not entirely accurate, these performance models provide first-order approximations for early capacity planning and design decisions
Highly adaptable real-time Kinematic Chain-Based Motion Retargeting for Virtual Characters
Transferring motion from one character to another is a crucial operation in character animation. This procedure, also known as motion retargeting, is essential for many applications, including computer-generated films, virtual reality and video games. We present a novel kinematic chain-based approach for real-time animation transfer between virtual characters of diverse skeletal structures and proportions. Our method automates key setup processes, including armature matching by extracting non-branching joint sequences, and employs a novel heuristic skeleton matching to probabilistically establish limb correspondences based on joint positions and chain alignment. For motion transfer, a joint angle imitation technique intelligently adapts source animation to the target, even with rest pose differences. To reduce artifacts like foot skating or self-penetration we use a dynamic chain scaling method that adjusts target positions based on limb length ratios. Our framework is characterized by its high adaptability and extensibility, allowing distinct inverse kinematics solvers for individual limbs, providing a flexible open-source framework for animators and researchers
