Defining the Need for Situated Learning Experiences in Undergraduate General Chemistry: A Study
Many real-world situations and current scientific issues are rooted in chemistry. However, chemical concepts are often perceived as irrelevant by students. Perceived irrelevance of chemistry concepts will likely hinder critical thinking of scientific issues. dditionally, perceived irrelevance may foster misconceptions about chemistry throughout all levels of education (Gluck et al., 2015). Identified irrelevance among students may be due to common curricular trends in chemistry education, often lacking situated learning experiences. Cultivating the connection between general chemistry topics and natural phenomena opens opportunities up for students to build an excellent understanding of the physical universe and how it functions. The objective of this status study is to determine curricular trends in General Chemistry education at research one (R1) universities. Specifically, a qualitative approach was used to assess the material R1 universities are currently offering within General Chemistry courses, and the teaching strategies utilized to administer the curriculum.Dr. Katherine Shar
