A Visit With Art Fletcher 
Anyo e who ls interested in the problems or training 
the hard-core unemployed for productive Jobs, really in· 
terested in the practical aspects that is, and not 1ust 
the abstract, should take time to spend a session with 
Art Fletcher. He makes more sense and logic In 20 
minutes on the subject than all the bureaucratic heads 
and textbooks can do in a year. 
Fletcher's been there; he's worked at the job of putting 
people on jobs. He knows a lot of what it's all about. 
Moreover, he brings to the problem tar more than just 
experience, valuable as that has been. He has had serious 
academic training in a number of universities including 
advanced work in political science and sociology. This 
background (plus some years in professional football 
which may have more relevancy than he thinks) combined 
with an articulate if sometimes abrasive tongue and a 
very, very sharp intellect equip Fletcher very well indeed 
for public work and a position of public trust. 
He's running, of course, for the lieutenant.governor's 
position. A position which he wants to make mean some· 
thing, a pivot spot from which he can, on a state-wide 
basis, use his experience on a broader level. "I wan 
to get where I can implement, carry out these programs 
that sometimes can get bogged down/' Fletcher says. 
Meaning that too often well-intentioned- social legislation 
gets completely snarled in administrative red tape. Fletcher 
wants to cut the tape; get to the unemployed, give them a 
chance to help themselves, train themselves, prepare 
themselves for a useful life and in the doing improve 
and elevate their own neighborhoods and environment. 
"White, black, Indian, Puerto Rican, it makes no dif· 
ference,'' Fletcher says. All of them have the poten· 
tial in the main to do the job for themselves, if they're . , J

neighborhood enterprises, stores, credit unions, co-ops," ~
