Riesel invites AF to write a guest column for him, and notes that sheetmetal workers president Carlough wrote him a "snide" letter
Correspondence
AF sends Riesel a guest column in which he relays the reasons for the RPP and the history of its battle to be implemented. "Is the Philadelphia Plan a union busting device? No. The present problem has been created by the failure of a number of construction unions to represent minority workers or to allow them to join locals. The answer for the unions is to organize this labor supply, let minorities in and allow them to participate. More Philadelphia-type plans are an alternative. Other alternatives are to have all black unions or to encourage black contractors to do more and more Federal construction work. These black contractors are largely non-unions [sic] simply because the locals will not accept their empoyees as members.
The Impact of Education on Self-Management and Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) currently affects approximately 1 in 9 individuals in the United States. Access to education, transportation to appointments, and other social determinants of health can reflect poor self-management, adverse outcomes, and increased morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing a series of expert-led, educational classes with a toolkit for patients diagnosed with prediabetes or T2DM. The Health Belief Model was the framework used to develop and implement educational intervention through a 4-month period. This project was conducted at two sites in Northeast Kansas: one which provides primary care services to an underserved population, while the other is a satellite clinic located within a housing authority. The PDSA cycle was used to develop and evaluate program implementation throughout the project. A toolkit was developed and provided to individuals who attended the sessions. Educational sessions focused on T2DM overview, risk factors, comorbidities, medication, diet, exercise, stress, and self-management. Expert specialists were recruited for two of the educational sessions. A diabetes self-management questionnaire (DSMQ) score and glycated hemoglobin (A1c) value were obtained prior to the first educational session. A final DSMQ score and A1c value were obtained at the conclusion of the last educational session. Qualitative measurement revealed improved perceived self-management of T2DM as well as an overall improvement of A1c control after a 4-month period.School of Nursin
A Transdiagnostic Approach to the Treatment of an Adolescent Male with Depressive and Anxious Symptomatology
An Empirically Supported Treatment Case StudyThe following is a de-identified case study that presents the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment
process for an adolescent presenting with major depressive disorder (MDD) with anxious distress
and a history of trauma. All names and identifying information have been changed to protect the
client’s anonymity. Newton is a 16 year-old African-American, LGBTQ+ male who presented
with depressive and anxious symptoms that were interfering with his home, school, and social
functioning. He was assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for
Children and Adolescents (MINI-KID) and multiple self-report measures. At the time of writing,
he had attended 10 sessions of individual therapy utilizing a cognitive behavioral approach
consistent with a transdiagnostic conceptualization of psychopathology. Interventions targeted
emotion regulation, avoidance reduction, cognitive flexibility, emotional awareness, and
behavioral activation. A transcript of one session is included to demonstrate Newton’s
presentation and engagement in treatment as well as the therapist’s implementation of treatment
strategies. Scores obtained on self-report measures throughout treatment are provided to assess
symptom reduction and progress on therapeutic goals.Psychology Departmen
Treatment for Anxious Depression: A Case Study of a 20-Year-Old
An Empirically Supported Treatment Case StudyThe following is a de-identified case study on the treatment process and outcome for a 20-yearold
pregnant LatinX female diagnosed with anxious depression. Names and other details of the
case have been changed to preserve confidentiality. The name “Nicole” is used to refer to the
client within this document. Nicole is a full-time college student who presented with moderate to
severe depressive and anxious symptoms that impacted her ability to function at home and
academically. Consistent with the literature on empirically supported treatments for anxious
depression, this therapist utilized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to assist Nicole in learning skills
to effectively manage and reduce her symptoms. The interventions included psychoeducation on
depression, lifestyle changes, and cognitive restructuring. This EST Case Study reviews the
relevant scientific literature of theoretical models used to conceptualize etiology and
maintenance of symptoms, an overview of treatment modalities used to treat symptoms, along
with empirical support for those interventions. This is followed by client-specific descriptions of
the initial interview and formal assessments used to clarify diagnosis, development of a treatment
plan, implementation of treatment interventions, and measures of treatment progress. A
transcription of one complete session is included to provide a glimpse into Nicole’s presentation
and offer insights into how this therapist processed session content to make informed decisions
regarding implementation of treatment interventions. Reflections on strengths and areas for
improvement regarding the therapist’s skills are also discussed. In brief summary, Nicole
regularly attended 15 sessions over 5 months. Her adherence to homework assignments was
fairly consistent. She implemented therapeutic techniques, such as developing a healthier diet,
improving sleep hygiene, and engaging in cognitive restructuring. At the conclusion of the fivemonth
EST Case Study, Nicole had made small treatment gains and was somewhat more effectively managing her symptoms. Treatment was expected to continue beyond the writing of this report.Psychology departmen
Tax Shield Choices: Pedagogical Application
We offer a pedagogical application on the role of taxation on business decision-making that focuses on the value of a traditional interest tax shield (ITS) versus a retained earnings tax shield (RTS). This exercise demonstrates that an RTS serves to promote business growth, lower financial distress, and achieve greater equality in the taxation of different business ownership forms. A study of these two tax policies challenge students to understand the relevant tax shield factors that are essential in achieving optimal corporate finance and tax policy outcomes. In terms of maximizing firm value, students will learn that an ITS is inefficient and suboptimal compared to an RTS policy. Students also gain experiential knowledge and acquire skills on how to analyze an RTS in terms of understanding its role in maximizing firm value. By experiencing this exercise, students acquire important insights on how taxation policy can be detrimental or beneficial to business growth and what is needed to overcome barriers to achieve this growth. Finally, our instructional exercise supports teamwork learning and enables students to apply finance equations and enhance their Excel skills used in the business world.Kaw Valley Ban
