You have much to offer, Art, in the political field, and I earnestly hope that you will not let this slight set-back deter you from further efforts along the political line. I lost to Senator Magnuson in 1950 by a small margin, but I never let that defeat bother me one little bit.

A Lesson for Nixon

ought to say something to Richard Nixon. 
"Ne.mely," said Fletcher, "that you 
can go out and talk about implementing 
progr_ams like mine and you're not going 
to alienate the white voters." 
Fletcher is not white. By now he's 
probably the best known Negro in the 
State of Washington, and he's the only 
Negro ever to be nominated for a state-
wide office.

"I think among other things, one of the 
things that captured the public's ime.gi· 
nation was my proposing to be a fulltime 
lieutenant governor and I'm going to stay 
with that issue," he said. 
''It isn't JUST being a fulltime lieu· 
tenant governor either, but someone 
there fulltime with the capacity to do a 
specific thing. It appears to me that this 
is the one thing that was a very, very 
decisive rector in my being elected." 
There were tipoffs along the way that 
showed he was gaining among the voters, 
Fletcher said. "One was interest in the national Re-
publican platform and my appearance 
before the platform committee. Time and 
again, people would ask, 'Did you get 
it in the platform-your self help pro-
gram? Are you satisfied with what they've 
done?' I csn answer that by. the fact 
two bills are in the bopper right now, 
ane in the }louse of R~presentatives and 
ane in the senate on 1t shows we were 
being heard.'' 
Another tipoff that things were getting 
better and he was picking up, he said, 
"was on questions in reference to my 
meeting with Nixon. It showed they were 
reading about me. Their questions were 
pointed and specific." 
. The vote he got, he said, could be 
interpreted as the result of talking di· 
r.ectly to the people and offering a solu· 
tion to a problem.

but if you talk about Vietnam and th~ 
home front, it's the home front that 
really he.s their attention. I think we're 
going to get more and more of this from 
Nixon now. I think we're goina to see 
him roll up his sleeves and go to

the domestic issues." 
Nixon previously had said, and in dis-
agreement with Gov. Dan Evans, that 
foreign relations and the domestic prob-
lems were of equal priority in the need 
for solution. Evans felt the home front 
was the most important. 
Nomination of Art Fletcher shows that 
the people want someone who offers a 
positive e.nd promising program to take 
care of the problems at their front and 
back doors, and what color the someone 
is really isn't important. 
Now what Nixon should do is quit wor-
rying about what's going to scare off the 
white voters, and go out and convince 
the equally concemed black and white 
people of this country that he's got a 
positive program and what color anybody 
is doesn't matter if he needs a hand up.

WASHINGTON - Somewhere down that 
long, hard road called the future this country is 
going to kick its present flirtation with racisi:i, 
~~ separatism, ethnic host1l-
~ · itv and return to the 
d1:eam that all Americans 
can live together in peace. 
If it does, the nation 
will be indebted to a band 
of courageous men who 
kept the faith when the 
mob was howling and 
stampeding in the other 
direction. 
I mean men like the 
Rev. Theodore M. Hes-
burgh president of Notre Daine University a~d 
chai~an of the Federal Civil Rights Comnus-
sion. 
And men like G. Holnl:es Braddock, cbair-
man of the school board in Dade County 
(Miami), Florida. 
Richard 1\1. Nixon named Father He.sburgh 
chairman of the rights commission. But t~at 
does not stop the noted educa1tor from saying 
publicly that Mr. Nixon is raising "phony is-
sues'' when the President goes around the 
country orating against busing of pupils or in 
favor of neighborhood schools. 
"Forty per cent of Ame:i~an school ~ids .a~e 
bused now; you can't say it is a bad thmg; it is 
a reality,'' says Father Hesburgh. 
Thanks largely to the attitude of this admin-
istration busing "for racial balance" has be-
come a~ intensely emotional issue all over the 
cotmtry, with the ''neighborhood school" s~d­
denly a sacrosanct concept. Unde: these c.ir-
cumstances, Father Hesburgh might easily 
have held his ton~e. 
But showing greater loyalty to the truth

1han to the President who appointed him, Hes-
burgh noted that "neighborhood schools are not 
the pattern anywhere," pointing out tha~ all 
over the country citizens have been consolidat-
ing schools for decades in order to give chil-
dren better educations. 
The Southern-born Braddock also refused to 
bite his tongue when the busing issue came up 
this summer in testin1ony before the Senate's 
select committee on equal educational opportu-
nity. 
"If we want to inake a difficult problem 
more difficult, we can continue to dodge the 
gut issue," Braddock said. "We can make ex-
cuses about preserving the neighborhood 
schoot about having freedom of choice, about 
keeping the Fedetal government out of the OP: 
eration of our schools, and on and on.

gro for. lieutenant governor. Whether they 
make more history by electing him in No-
vember remains to be seen. 
The political career of Art Fletcher thus 
far is nothing short of phenomenal. A few 
months ago he was only a Pasco city 
councilman known by few voters outside 
his home community. But now he has im-
pressed governors, platform writers and a 
presidential candidate with his ideas for 
helping the blacks to help themselves. He 
has won thousands of admirers around the 
state. And last Tuesday he defeated two 
other Republicans, including a famous 
hydroplane racer, Bill Mlitlcey, for the 
nomination for lieutenant governor. Not 
major public office. 
His victory was even more impressive 
in light of the comparative populations of 
Fletcher's hometown and Muncey s (Seat-
tle). 
Fletcher won ~t have it easy against the 
incumbent lieutenant governor, John A. 
Cherberg, in November. Cherberg has 
alienated some members of his own party, 
notably liberals, but he showed consider-
able political strength in Tuesday's vote. 
He won nearly 75 per cent of the Demo-
cratic vote against two other candidates 
and outpolled Fletcher five-to-four. 
But at the rate Fletcher has made pro-
gress the last few months anything could 
happen between now and Nov. 5. We,re 
making no bets on this race.
