The use of uv-vis spectrophotometry for determining the malondialdehyde as a quality marker in pork traceability

    No full text
The aim of the paper is to define the biochemical approach in assessing the quality of pork traceability using the UV-VIS spectrophotometric method to determine the concentration of malondialdehyde. The mechanism of the proposed chemical reaction consists in the formation of the red chromogen, where λ=532 nm, between the thiobarbituric acid and malondialdehyde in the glacial acetic acid medium. The proposed concept is related to food safety, consists in using the biochemical method of evaluating the activity of peroxidase in the agri-food products, and represents the basis of the medical-veterinary approach of the accuracy in evaluating the substances that result in the process of pork alteration. The near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and the techniques of pH measurement served as methodological support in quality assessment. The result of the experimental evaluation confirms that the concentration of red chromogen is an genuine marker of the pork quality

Formulation and evaluation of antibacterial phytotherapeutic gels containing metal ions and essential oils

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to develop topical phytotherapeutic gels containing essential oils alone or in combination with copper ions and to assess their antibacterial activity in vitro. Following the formulation of the gels, the organoleptic properties, physicochemical properties, and in vitro antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated. Copper sulfate demonstrated strong synergistic antibacterial activity when combined with the selected essential oil blend. This preliminary study assessed and confirmed the synergistic antimicrobial properties of sulfate copper and essential oils in phytotherapeutic formulations with topical applications

Non-thermal plasma activated water (PAW) is described as a potent antimicrobial agent, but although it has numerous bio-medical applications, there is a lack of toxicity studies in living organisms. Thus, as a main objective, we aimed to evaluate the in vivo methemoglobin sizing potential of non-thermal plasma activated water (PAW) in CD-1 mice. The device used in our experiment is based on the GlidArc principle, with the advantage of adjusting the values of the current in the circuit on account of a special power supply, which works with magnetic scattering fluxes. A daily volume of 300 ml of PAW was prepared daily with this reactor with the following physico-chemical parameters: conductivity 446 ± 25 μS / cm, pH 2.78 ± 0.12, ORP + 1.06 V, NO2-192 ± 10 mg / L, NO3-1550 ± 95 mg / L, H2O2 2.6 ± 0.12 mg / L, O3 1.08 ± 0.07 mg / L, peroxynitrite - ONOO-. After analysis and interpretation of the data, it was found that methemoglobinemia did not differ significantly in the groups treated with PAW (p <0.05) compared to the control group (p = 0.8076). Thus, long-term consumption of PAW has no detrimental effects on the health status of CD-1 mice

Yield and bulb quality of storage onion cultivars as affected by farming system and nitrogen dose

The need of sustainable management system is connected both to environmental safeguarding and to the increasing consumers’ demand for safety and premium-quality food. A research was carried out to assess the interactions between 2 farming systems (organic, conventional), 4 nitrogen doses (100, 133, 166.5, 200 kg/ha N) and 11 cultivars on yield, quality, antioxidants, elemental composition and heavy metals content of storage onion bulbs. The bulb yield of six out of eleven cultivars was significantly greater in the conventional farming than in the organic one, with Ramata di Montoro and Rossa di Tropea showing the best performances, even in terms of plant dry weight, under both farming systems; Tosca reached the highest leaf area index. The conventional farming system also led to higher bulb yield, dry weight, nitrate content and ascorbic acid compared to the organic one for most cultivars, whereas quercetin was better affected by the organic management. The 166.5 and 200 kg/ha N doses resulted in the highest yield as well as Leaf Area Index (LAI), and 200 kg/ha N also enhanced dry weight, nitrate content and ascorbic acid. The 100 kg/ha N supply elicited the highest bulb storability, whereas 166.5 kg/ha N led to the highest bulb dry matter, soluble solids, total sugars, macroelements and most microelements. The 133 kg/ha N dose resulted in the highest monosaccharides, titratable acidity, quercetin, polyphenols, and Antioxidant Activity (AOA). The cultivar Ramata di Montoro showed the highest values of soluble solids, total sugars, monosaccharides and pungency. The cultivar Rosies des Aries displayed the lowest bulb storability, along with Rossa di Tropea, and the highest dry matter together with Grenada, Tosca and Zolotnichek. Polanowska attained the highest levels of antioxidants, AOA and macroelements. The highest bulb accumulation of microelements and heavy metals differed with the cultivar, though Ramata di Montoro showed the lowest accumulation of most heavy metals. Based on the outcome of the present research, the conventional farming system is recommendable in terms of yield, for the 55% of the storage onion cultivars examined, whereas the organic management improves the overall bulb quality, and the 166.5 kg/ha N represents the most effective dose for achieving the best compromise between yield and quality

Comparison of two microwave drying techniques for cereal seeds and determination of their physical parameters

    No full text
The microwave drying of wheat and corn seeds by two technologies at different working powers is studied here. The main objective is to evaluate the effect of microwaves on variations in the moisture, colour and size of the seeds after microwave drying. The tests are performed in microwave ovens with and without inverter technology at three drying powers (260, 440 and 620 W). It has been observed that increasing drying power results in a ~50% reduction in drying time and a seed moisture level below 14%. The colour variation of the seeds is insignificant between microwave drying with and without the inverter. However, there is also an unacceptable decrease in size for both types of seeds with increasing drying power, which can lead to increased shrinkage of the seeds and the appearance of cracks, especially in the corn seeds

The EntreComp certificate project – a bridge between school education and the world of work

    No full text
The article is based on the EntreComp Certificate project (Erasmus+ Programme - 2019-UK01-KA201-062076) as it is being developed within a partnership of educational (universities and schools) and IT institutions and organizations from the United Kingdom, Romania, France, Italy and Cyprus. The EntreComp Certificate project focuses on the importance of entrepreneurship in social and economic development and individual growth nowadays. The project relies on the EntreComp Framework established by the European Union; it aims to enhance Europe’s entrepreneurial potential by supporting individuals to acquire and develop the skills and the key competencies detailed in the EntreComp Framework. The article presents the project’s objectives, methodology and main outputs. The study gives insights into how the partnership adapted the EntreComp Framework to meet teachers’ needs and enable them to use the EntreComp Framework in their school contexts. To this end, an e-learning platform was created. Its suggested activities and guidance curriculum are meant to enable educators to develop and then assess the fifteen competences of the EntreComp Framework that their students acquired in their activities at Intermediate and Advanced Levels

Activități horticole cu impact durabil asupra comunităților urbane, în contextul izolării Covid 19

    Get PDF
Horticultural activities in urban areas and suburbs describe economically viable ways of production (North and Patterson, 2018), and are a continuous growing segment of production in developing countries as well as in Romania countries and are expected to have positive impacts on nutrition quality first and implicit on people’s health. This comes as a necessity as the population is continuously growing as the land has a limited use. In a wide sense, urban horticulture includes everything from small home and community gardens to city park management, rooftop greening, as well as complex vertical way of production. This sector assures increased availability of fresh products (vegetables and fruits) in big cities, healthier diets, improved food safety, low transportation costs, efficient resource use, and the mitigation of environmental impacts of horticultural production such as the emission of greenhouse gases
