The influence of saline stress on the water regime in bitter cucumbers (Momordica charantia)
Bitter cucumber (Momordica charantia) is a tropical and subtropical plant widely distributed in China, Malaysia, India
and tropical Africa, with a long history of use in traditional medicine. Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress worldwide
that affects plant morphology and physiology leading to reduced growth, reduced production yield or in some cases
plant death. Due to the reduction of water accessibility, plants try for its optimal absorption, increasing the
concentration of vacuolar juice as a method of combating the hypertonicity of the external environment. To determine
the adaptation capacity to saline stress, which is increasingly common, two varieties (Brâncusi and Rodeo) and three
experimental lines (Line 1, Line 3 and Line 4) of bitter cucumber were treated with saline solutions of different
concentrations (100 mM NaCl and 200 mM NaCl), and following the treatments determinations of free water and
bound water content were performed. Research has shown that with the onset of salt stress, the amount of free water in
bitter cucumber leaves decreased and the amount of bound water increased in most of the studied plants, which
highlights the triggering of a pronounced reaction to this type of abiotic stress. The statistical analysis shows significant
differences between the control and the treated variants both in the case of free and bound water
Influence of Environmental Factors on Some Biochemical and Physiological Indicators in Grapevine from Copou Vineyard, Iasi, Romania
Climate factors strongly impact the growth of grapes and their flavonoid composition, especially due to heat and drought stress. Four varieties—Gelu, Moldova, Purpuriu, and Coarna Neagra—from a Copou vineyard were analyzed to assess the impact of climate change on the anthocyanin concentration in grapes and total chlorophyll content of the leaves, and find possible correlations between these parameters during the two studied years, such as to raise producer awareness regarding the climate impact on table grape vine growth. Moldova and Purpuriu show adaptation to a slight temperature increase above the normal average and also to a water deficit, with increased concentrations of anthocyanins of up to three times. The Moldova variety accumulated low amounts of chlorophyll pigments in most analyzed development phases, indicating a negative correlation between these pigments. Coarna neagra exhibited an increase of the foliar pigments, a variety that proved to be less valuable from the point of view of anthocyanin content. Positive correlations were found between the anthocyanin and chlorophyll concentrations in the case of Gelu, Moldova, and Coarna neagra cultivars during the latter phase of the fruit development, whereas the water deficit in the second year induced negative correlations during fruit development and at the time of harvest for all studied varieties except Moldova
Phenotypic evaluation of some spring naked oat lines in the pedoclimate conditions of north-east Moldova
The testing of some spring naked oat lines (Avena sativa ssp. nudissativa) from the collection of the Suceava Plants
Genetic Resources Bank in the pedoclimatic conditions of the Ezăreni farm in Iași county aimed to evaluate some
morphological characters used both as descriptors by the Gene Banks, as well as component elements of the production
capacity, in order to carry out a breeding program for this species. Thus, for the five lines tested, the values of
morphological characters such as plant height, number of siblings per plant, number of spikelets per panicle, number of
seeds per spikelet, number of seeds per plant and weight of seeds per plant were determined. The data were used to
evaluate the intra-population variability (means, amplitude of variation and coefficients of variation) and interpopulation (means and amplitude of variation), the results highlighting a pronounced variability for all the analyzed
characters, both at the intra-population and inter-population level
The Influence of Sensory Characteristics of Game Meat on Consumer Neuroperception: A Narrative Review
Game meat contains bioactive compounds that directly influence the formation of a rich reservoir of flavor precursors that produce specific sensory properties. Quality is considered one of the most influential determinants of consumer behavior, but the interpretation of this concept differs between consumers. Although recognized for its quality, its unique sensory characteristics (smell, taste, aroma) may have a major impact on consumer perception. The aim of this review is to describe the consumer behavior regarding game meat through elements of neuroperception, using methods of analysis, observation, and interpretation of scientific information from the literature. Following the analysis of published papers on this topic, it was shown that external factors influencing the biological basis of behavior could provide explanations for the acceptance or rejection of this type of meat and solutions. Neuroperception can explain the mechanism behind consumer decision-making. The influence of extrinsic factors (environment, mood, emotions, stress) shapes the perception of the quality attributes of game meat, the unique sensory characteristics of game meat passing through a primary filter of sensory receptors (eyes, nose, tongue, etc). Game meat is darker and tougher (compared to meat from domestic animals), and the taste and smell have the power to trigger memories and change the mood, influencing consumer behavior. Understanding consumer attitudes towards game meat in relation to quality attributes and the physiology of sensory perception can provide important insights for food industry professionals, processors, sensory evaluators, and researchers
Association between foot skin temperature (FST) and locomotion scoring (LS) in dairy cattle
The health status of the hoof in dairy cattle is crucial for their overall well-being and productivity. Hoof diseases and
lesions can lead to lameness, decreased milk production, and economic losses for dairy farmers. Traditional methods
of assessing hoof health involve manual inspection and trimming, which can be time-consuming and subjective. This
research article explores the potential use of a phone-connected infrared camera as a non-invasive and objective tool
for assessing the health status of the hoof in dairy cattle, by investigating the association between foot skin
temperature (FST) and locomotion scoring (LS) in a group of Romanian Black Spotted dairy cows. LS was carried
out using the mobile app developed by the Wisconsin University (Locomotion Scorer). The thermograms were
collected during afternoon milking and processed using the FLIR software. Overall, 73.9% of the cows were scored
as non-lame, while 13.04% presented signs of foot lesions. The highest temperature observed in the interdigital area,
in the lame group, by thermography, was T°=36.5°C. In conclusion, monitoring hoof health status in dairy cattle is
essential for ensuring their well-being and productivity. The use of an infrared thermal camera for the assessment of
foot surface temperature has shown promise as a noninvasive tool for evaluating hoof health
Comparative study on the dynamics of cows, milk production and dairy products
The aim of this study is to achieve a comparative analysis of the cow livestock number, production of milk and of main dairy products in Romania and European Union. The work is an extensive bibliographic documentation with the application of statistical tests for the period 2017-2021. At European Union level the herd of dairy cows is in decreasing with 5.63% and in Romania with 7.95%, from 1175.4 thousand heads in 2017 to 1081.9 thousand heads in 2021. The largest amount of raw milk available on the farm in 2021 belongs to Germany which records 32531.56 thousand tons, approx. 21% of the total quantity at EU level. In 2021 compared with 2017, the Europeans consumed with 3.91% less fresh dairy products and with approx. 5% more cheese. In the future, will be exploit more productive animals, making cow rearing a part of solutions in food crisis
Hind limbs pressure analysis in chronic osteo-aticular model of rabbits
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease. Animal models provide a clinically relevant way to study
the efficacy and toxicity of potential treatments for OA. The aim of paper was to study the impact of some variables
(housing conditions, treatments) on pressure exerted by the hind limbs of the rabbits as an indicators / control variables
in chronic osteo-articular animal model (OA). A number of 38 (3-31/2 month old) rabbits in 4 groups (non-OA, OAcontrol,
OA-treatment 1 and OA-treatment 2) where observed for 8 weeks period. Pressure and peak pressure were
measured with MobileMat™ device. For both the left (FSX-L) and right hind limb (FSX-R), positively correlated
(r=+0.693 and a p =0.000) the Mann-Whitney Test indicating a significant difference (p=0.028 and p=0.023) in the
pressure exerted by those limbs depending on the post-operative or non-operative state of the rabbits. The peak pleasure
for the right hind limb (FSX-R), was significant (p=0.019) in OA and non-OA comparison. Pressure exerted by this
limb depending on the post-operative or non-operative state of the rabbits. The most relevant correlation is between
peak pressure of left (FSX-L) and right (FSX-R) which are negative and significant (r=-0.425 and a p =0.008). In
conclusion, the results of the study were not influenced by cage types and treatments but body mass and OA model are
clearly associated with raw pressure and peak pressure on hind limbs
The use of idiomatic expressions in foreign language teaching. Case study, expressions related to cats
Idiomatic expressions are a fascinating subject for study, and it is impossible to learn or teach a language without
talking about it. In this paper, the authors discuss certain syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of the idiomatic
expressions on cats. The complex social and cultural meaning requires not only an understanding of their grammatical
and syntactic structures but also a shared knowledge of the language and the culture it transmits, which creates a certain
complicity and synergy between speakers. Furthermore, the correct interpretation of idiomatic expressions is often a
source of difficulty for learners of a foreign language, even if they know the meaning of the lexicon (Gross G., 1996).
Understanding these expressions in the age of globalization is essential for intercultural communication and
comprehension. The French and German languages are full of expressions and proverbs referring to cats, the meaning
and origin of which can sometimes seem obscure. We will illustrate this complexity with examples of idiomatic
expressions on cats, along with their etymology
Research regarding the influence of organic selenium on the imune response in swine
Currently, immunomodulation is an alternative in the fight against many diseases, being considered a possibility to fight against many infectious diseases that can affect pig herds. Selenium can be used for this purpose, the effect of its administration on the immune response being the main purpose of the present study. Following the administration of organic selenium, we found that in the case of WBC parameters, granulocytes and agranulocytes percentages and lymphoblastic transformation percentages of B lymphocytes, there are no major differences between the values recorded at the beginning of the experiment and the values recorded in the two experimental moments. Instead, following the administration of organic selenium, we observed significant increases in T lymphocytes percentages (by 9.94%, after 21 days, and respectively by 8.18%, after 30 days), percentages of lymphoblastic transformation of T lymphocytes (by 59.59% after 21 days, and respectively by 64.14% after 30 days), as well as the helper T lymphocytes/ supressor T lymphocytes ratio (by 46.15% after 21 days, and respectively by 65.38% after 30 days). Regarding the percentage of B lymphocytes, a decrease of this parameter is observed by 38.34% after 21 days and by 21.84% after 30 days following the administration of the product based on organic selenium
