Physicochemical traits of seedless barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) fruits stored under refrigeration as affected by heat and calcium chloride treatments

    No full text
The loss of chemical characteristics and quality of the fresh seedless barberry fruit during storage and qualitative losses of its dried fruit are the most important postharvest challenges in barberry industry and its exports. The fresh harvested fruit samples were dried using an electrical drier at 50°C to 50% moisture content. Thereafter, the effects of hot water alone (65°C for 45 sec), and hot water + 2% calcium chloride were carried out on the quality maintenance and chemicals during the cold storage of seedless barberry. The results showed that the samples treated with calcium chloride stored at 2°C had the highest TSS over time, whereas the titratable acidity of barberry fruits was not significantly affected by postharvest treatments. Hot water alone or in combination with calcium chloride treatment increased redness and chroma values result in better appearance quality than control. In addition, the treatments reduced the variable L* and thereby enhanced fruit lightness. The highest antioxidant content (% 77.92) was observed in hot water treated samples and the lowest (% 54.28) was obtained on control. Also, the highest amount of anthocyanins and antioxidants were obtained from samples treated with hot water. Only calcium chloride treatment had a significant effect on Ca content of the samples. The results revealed that postharvest application of hot water and calcium chloride treatments improved the appearance quality and nutritional values of fresh seedless barberry fruit, as well as extend the cold storage life, likely due to reduced pathogen contamination

Concrete aspects of improving the language learning process using new teaching methods

The topic of this paper concerns the following question: what aspects improve in the activity of the students of the German language, if after the exercises of Partnerarbeit (PA) type (working by two or in binomial), instead of the evaluation in ordinary plenary session, I will call Gruppenarbeit (GA) (working in groups) to evaluate the results? The starting point of this research was the following situation I encountered in the classroom: after the students conducted dialogues, interviews or telephone conversations with a colleague on a particular topic, not all the results could be presented and evaluated in plenary, because this didactic sequence would take too long and the learners' attention would be lost quickly. The impulse for improving this situation came from chapter 2.2: "Using work forms and social form" in the volume Deutsch Lehren Lernen 4 (Aufgaben, Übungen, Interaktion by Hermann Funk, Christina Kuhn et al.): Changing the social form. From chapter 2.2 it is clear why it makes sense to change the social form to evaluate the results after working in binomial or by two

In recent years, botanical collections are being used extensively as primary resources for numerous research studies. “Alexandru Beldie” Herbarium is part of the patrimony of the National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry “Marin Drăcea” and is registered in Index Herbariorum under the acronym BUCF. Created nine decades ago, the collection currently comprises approximately 40000 mounted specimens, with emphasis on the Romanian flora. The purpose of this work study was to create an updated electronic database of Elymus L. genus stored in the BUCF Herbarium and to provide a short description of the most relevant weeds with notes on their distribution, ecology and implications for agricultural ecosystems. The Elymus genus comprises 120 vouchers and is represented by eleven species and one subspecies. Among them were found three rare taxa for the vascular flora of Romania: Elymus farctus subsp. essarabicus (Savul. & Rayss) Melderis, E. panormitanus (Parl.) Tzvelev and E. pycnanthus (Godr.) Melderis. The Herbarium also stores a historical record, an E. hispidus (Opiz) Melderis specimen dated over two hundred years. Almost all plants are very well preserved being kept in their entirety and correctly attached to the voucher. Elymus representatives are widespread across the country and are found primarily in open woodlands, meadows and agricultural fields where are problematic weeds of cultivated crops. Specimens of Elymus genus stored in the herbarium were mainly collected from forest areas, but they can also be used as reference material in agricultural studies

Plant osmolytes play an important role in plant tolerance to abiotic stress factors.A greenhouse experiment with soybean was carried out with N-fixer rhizobacteria Bradyrhizobium japonicum applied singly or in combination with P (20 and 100 mg kg-1dry soil) and two soil moisture regimes: 70% of whole holding capacity (WHC) as control and water stress 35% WHC. All plants were grown under same moisture conditions until the flowering stage. Water deficit conditions were imposed at flowering stage of plants for 12 days. Plants cultivated under the combined effects of P deficiency and drought exhibited the highest proline accumulation. Soybean inoculated with B. japonicum showed increased root proline concentrations compared to uninoculated plants subjectedto temporary water deficit. Integrated use of inoculation and a moderate dose of P had a synergic effect on free proline accumulation in roots. The results revealed that combined influence of drought and P insufficiency significantly increased proline concentrations in nodules rather than in roots.Integrated use of rhizobacteria strain and a moderate dose of P decreased free amino acid accumulation in nodules under drought. There was a synergic interaction between the rhizobacteria strain and P in terms of leaves and stems nitrogen contents of soybean. In conclusion, soybean inoculation with B. japonicum in conjunction with P fertilization partially attenuates the adverse effects of constant low P availability and temporary drought on plants

The determinations aimed to study the growth and development of four walnut varieties (Anica, Grădinari, Miroslava and Velniţa) grafted usingthe Chip budding method. Biometric observations focused on the percentage of grafting success, and the height and diameter of the trees. In addition to biometric observations, biochemical determinations were performed on the content of photosynthetic pigments and peroxidase activity for thegrafted combinations in the first year of vegetation. The research results highlighted differences between the four walnut varieties in terms of growth vigor, photosynthetic pigment content and peroxidase activity

Two field experiments were done at a private farm in Kalabsho and Zayian district, Dakhlia Egypt, throughout 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons, to evaluate the promotive role of chitosan (Chi, 250 and 500 mg/l) and/or sodium metasilicate (Si, 125 and 250 mg/l) foliar application on barley growth, yield, and some physiological attributes in newly reclaimed soil. Application of Si or Chi concentrations showed an improvement in plant growth as: plant height, tiller number per plant, flag leaf area and shoot dry weight; photosynthetic pigments; organic osmolytes; ion percentage, as well as yield and its quality in both growing seasons. Generally, the application of Si gave higher values in most cases than Chi application in the experimental year. It was concluded that application of 125 mg/l sodium metasilicate twice at 50 and 70 days from sowing is advantageous to improving plant growth and productivity under newly reclaimed soils

Cells are vulnerable to oxidative stress during in vitro culture systems. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of vitamin C addition in in vitro culture media on porcine oocytes maturation rate based on morphological changes. Porcine COC’s were matured according to their morphological class (class I, II and III) in two groups: control (M) and supplemented with vitamin C (0.5 mM, C) in TCM 199 HEPES (M2520) modification media with hormones (0.88UI/ml FSH, F8174) at 38.50C in 5% CO2 humidified air atmosphere for 44h. The rates of oocytes with cumulus cells expansion were higher with addition of vitamin C as compared to control group, with 7.83% (C1), 70.59% (C2) and 6.04% (C3). It could be concluded from this preliminary study that addition of vitamin C in in vitro maturation medium has a beneficial effect on porcine oocytes especially in C2 group

The immunological aspects regarding the importance of the phagocytic indices at ovines

    No full text
The scientific investigations revealed in this research had the purpose to study some immunological aspects regarding the importance of the phagocytic indices at ovines in different physiological periods and at lambs in different periods of age. The obtained data, reflects that the cellular defense mechanisms against bacteria are performed by lymphocyte cells equipped with phagocytic macrophage functions, neutrophils, etc. This determines the importance of the phagocytic mechanisms in triggering and controlling cellular reactions. The results of the research reveal the evaluation of the cell phagocytic indices at ovines and lambs by establishing the significant values of both the phagocytic activity and the phagocytic intensity. These researches give us the possibility to conclude that the installation of the immunological reactivity of the animal body and the adaptation to changes in the environment, especially the action of the pathogens, take place

A 3 years old bitch was admitted with an inguinal mass. The ultrasound exam determined that the mass contained one live fetus and another 2 hyperechoic areas that surrounded one hypoechoic area each. We made an incision on the mass and found both uterine horns herniated through the left inguinal ring. We decided to perform ovariohysterectomy through the inguinal ring and after we did herniorrhaphy. The bitch recovered in a few days
