Development and characterisation of microporous biomimetic scaffolds loaded with magnetic nanoparticles as bone repairing material

    Get PDF
Fine-tuning of the scaffolds structural features for bone tissue engineering can be an efficient approach to regulate the specific response of the osteoblasts. Here, we loaded magnetic nanoparticles aka superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) into 3D composite scaffolds based on biological macromolecules (chitosan, collagen, hyaluronic acid) and calcium phosphates for potential applications in bone regeneration, using a biomimetic approach. We assessed the effects of organic (chitosan/collagen/hyaluronic acid) and inorganic (calcium phosphates, SPIONs) phase over the final features of the magnetic scaffolds (MS). Mechanical properties, magnetic susceptibility and biological fluids retention are strongly dependent on the final composition of MS and within the recommended range for application in bone regeneration. The MS architecture/pore size can be made bespoken through changes of the final organic/inorganic ratio. The scaffolds undertake mild degradation as the presence of inorganic components hinders the enzyme catalytic activity. In vitro studies indicated that osteoblasts (SaOS-2) on MS9 had similar cell behaviour activity in comparison with the TCP control. In vivo data showed an evident development of integration and resorption of the MS composites with low inflammation activity. Current findings suggest that the combination of SPIONs into 3D composite scaffolds can be a promising toolkit for bone regeneration

The present study was conducted to assess the organic pollution level of Sarat Lake in the city of Braila. A total of 14 species belonging to 12 genera of phytoplankton have been identified, among them 9 species belong to Bacillariophyceae, 2 species of Cholorophyceae and 3 species of Cyanophyceae. The Palmer, Algal Genus and Algal Species Pollution Index were employed to study the water quality of Sarat Lake in the city of Braila. Palmer's Algal Index showed that all four stations in Sarat Lake have little organic pollution. The total scores in S1 and S4 were 11 indicating moderate pollution, in S2 and S3 were 9 indicating lack of organic pollution. The genera with tolerance to pollution were Oscillatoria, Phormidium, Synedra and Navicula. Physical-chemical analysis data has supported Palmer's organic pollution index. Shannon Wiener index was recorded as a diversity index, it recorded the maximum value (3,311) in S4 and the minimum value (2,774) in S2. Thus, algae taxa can be considered a good bioindicator for assessing the health of lentic aquatic ecosystems

This study investigated the effect of probiotic supplementation into diets on blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and plasma creatinine of broiler chickens. The probiotic used in this study is a commercial probiotic powder containing 3 dominant strains, namely Candida ethanolica, Monascus fumeus, and Bacillus subtilis. One hundred broiler chickens were randomly assigned to four treatments. The treatments were the percentage of probiotic supplementation on basal diet: PP0 (control/basal diet with no probiotic supplementation; PP025 (basal diet with 0.25% probiotic); PP050 (basal diet with 0.50% probiotic); PP075 (basal dietwith0.75% probiotic). The probiotic powder in respective treatment was calculated based on amount of basal diet supplementation. The calculated amount of probiotic then mixed to the basal diet prior to supplied to the animals. The results showed that there was no significant difference in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and plasma creatinine in any probioticfed birds compared to control group. However, there is a tendency of decrease in creatinine level in PP050, suggesting a lower rate of muscle expansion and kidneys function, although the difference was not significant. BUN and plasma creatinine were associated with the functionality and health of kidneys. In conclusion, the probiotic supplementation in the diet give neither benefit nor damage to renal health and functionality of broiler chickens

The diversification of wine assortments with valuable varieties with qualitative and productive potential, with better tolerance to diseases and stress factors, is one of the main concerns of Romanian wine research. In this paper are presented data on the agrobiological and technological potential of some varieties for white wines created at R.D.S.V.O. Odobeşti (Şarba, Băbească gri, Mioriţa and Vrancea), in the climatic conditions of the wine year 2019-2020. In the Odobeşti vineyard the wine year 2019-2020 was characterized by a severely deficient rainfall regime, having as effect the atmospheric drought followed by the diminution of the water reserve in the soil and the gradual installation of the pedological drought. The Şarba variety showed a more accentuated sensitivity to the atmospheric and pedological drought, which generated a stagnation of the sugar accumulation process in the grains. The grape production varied between 5.19 kg/vine for the Mioriţa variety and 6.17 kg/vine for the Băbească gri variety, values close to the productive potential of these varieties. Qualitatively, the production was characterized by superior accumulations of sugars between 188.5 g /l for the Mioriţa variety and 212.9 g/l for the Băbească gri and Şarba varieties, with values of the total acidity of the must between 7.34 g/l acid tartaric to the Băbească gri variety and 5.17 g/l tartaric acid to the Vrancea variety

The present study describes the first report of Dirofilaria repens infection with the presence of both microfilariae and adult nematodes in a cat from Northeastern Romania. Briefly, a 5-year-old male mixed breed cat was presented to a veterinary clinic in Iasi (Romania), for neutering, in early February 2020. During the surgery, two whitish worms were removed from the internal part of the scrotum. Two adult nematodes, one female and one male, were identified, on the basis of morphological features, as D. repens with whitish, cylindrical bodies, measuring 12.5 cm and 6.5 cm in length, respectively. At histology, the female nematode showed two cavitated structures containing myriads of variably arranged microfilariae. The male had a transversal diameter of 350 μm, a 10 μm thick cuticle and a ridge-period of 10 Мm. multiplex PCR confirmed the diagnosis of D. repens from both nematodes. The Knott’s test revealed the presence of microfilariae of D. repens. Routine biochemistry panel was within range with one exception, urea serum level slightly increased. The haematology results revealed an increased number of neutrophils, lymphocytes and eosinophils. The cat had an infection with Otodectes cynotis as well. The cat was discharged with the following therapy recommended: oral doxycycline (10 mg/kg) for 30 days and topical moxidectin, monthly doses. After six months, the Knott’s test gave negative results. Further studies should include new insights of D. repens infection in cats concerning its epidemiology, diagnosis and control

Food fraud prevention as an active tool in meat industry: a case study of poultry slaughterhouse

    No full text
Worldwide latest food fraud incidents have emphasized the need to reinforce food fraud prevention across the global supply chain, which again is essential not just to protect public health, but also to regain weakened consumer trust in foods, in an economic context where entrepreneurs and regulators acknowledge that confidence is the cornerstone of efficient and productive economies. Unfortunately, current food safety and quality management systems were not initially intended to prevent fraud. Prevention of food fraud involves a particular approach: it must take into account vulnerability assessments and formulate a food fraud mitigation plan, that needs to be continuously updated, being correlated with national and international context on this subject and the fact that food fraud typically appears when the opportunity and the motivation of food crime are strong and the probability of being detected as well as the penalties are minimal. The central objective of this paper was to develop a functional analysis tool starting with a pre-existing "NSF Fraud Security Model" version, designed to support the large reputable food retailers and authorities in the prediction of potential for fraudulent activity in a variety of products. This case study, focused on three key strategic elements: the prediction, prevention and management of the food fraud mitigation plan in accordance with Guidelines for Implementation of the GFSI recognized schemes. The outcome of this project is a functioning prototype, a concept built over the past 2 years via collaborative sessions with project team members and tested for input from industry and regulatory representatives. This analysis provides a framework for evaluating the role of science and technology in identification, mitigation, and then prevention

Characterization of pomegranate cultivars in palm groves of the Oued Righ valley (South-Eastern Algeria)

    No full text
Varietal recognition is a key step for good management of genetic diversity. Indeed, the morphological description of certain organs, such as the leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds, allow a more or less rapid and reliable identification of the varieties or cultivars. The culture of the pomegranate tree is very known in the valley of Oued Righ in the Algerian Southern, and it constitutes the main fruit species with a number of trees of 27.77 % of total number. The pomegranate tree is found in more than 84% of the farms of the region and its production is complementary of that of the dates. Unfortunately, no study has been realized on the characterization and the valorization of this species. To know and identify the varieties or the existing cultivars, we have undertaken a work of characterization of clones cultivated in the valley of Oued Righ. The plant material constituted by 13 clones of pomegranate tree stemming from various farms. The method of work consists in taking 20 fruits by tree for physico-chemical analyses in the laboratory. The results of analyses on sample of 13 clones described five cultivars, among which some present acceptable characters of fruit from a caliber point of view, contents in sugars and acidity. It shows that the naming of cultivars by the farmers based only on the acid taste of fruits "Hamad" or sweetened "Hlou" is not scientific and remain insufficient. Our results confirm the usefulness of morphological descriptors in the characterization of plant genetic resources. However, more clarification can be achieved by the undeniable contribution of molecular markers

Majority of the disease outbreak in developing countries have been attributed to contaminated water with children being the worst hit. Therefore, this study analyzed the effect of water sources on the health status of children under the age of 5 years in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. Primary data was obtained through the use of semistructured interviews; 150 households with at least one child under five years were interviewed however; only 146 questionnaires were completed and found valid for analysis. The data was subjected to descriptive statistics, such as pie chart, bar charts. The results show that majority (58.2%) of the children were males. Also, most (83.5%) of the children were infants, i.e. within the age range of 0-2 years. Most (96%) of the households had access to improved water sources of which protected dug well is the most accessible. Many (42%) of the households reported that they experience periods of water shortage, this explains why water washed diseases (disease associated with poor hygiene in the face of water scarcity) was the most predominant diseases reported among the children with 70 reported cases. These were closely followed by the water related insect vector diseases with 64 reported cases and then water borne diseases with 48 reported cases. Water based diseases rarely occurred in the study area. This study, therefore, recommends that effort should be geared towards provision of safe water all year round for the farming households. Also, insecticide treated nets should be made available for the children in the farming households so as to prevent insect bites

Solanum melongena L. are grown for their special nutritional intake in the body, such as carbohydrates, food salts, vitamins and polyphenols. Data from the scientific literature mention that the main method of establishing eggplant crops is through seedlings. Eggplants are a thermophilic species widely cultivated in different habitats, a low cultivation temperature (< 20 °C), as one of the major abiotic stresses, could significantly disturb the normal physiological and metabolic processes of eggplants. Eggplant crops play a main role in the world, with a high ecological plasticity, adaptable to different crop systems. Also, eggplant plants are affected by a large number of pathogens and pests, which is why solutions are sought using different methods of establishing the crops, under ecological farming. Thus, during the research, two eggplant cultivars (Mirval F1 and Black Pearl F1) were treated with organic and conventional fertilizers compared with control
