Measuring the big five personality traits effects on manager’s propensity to take risks

    No full text
This paper aims to analyze the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and managers' propensity to take risks. The items used in the questionnaire to assess the Big Five inventory were grouped into five large dimensions: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness. The risk taking orientation was measured based on two dimensions: profit vs. safety and bold growth vs. moderate growth. Several hypotheses have been tested on a convenience sample of 154 Romanian managers, using correlation, exploratory, and confirmatory factor analysis and causal (structural) model. Results show that extraverted managers are more prone to look for profit maximisation to the detriment of safety, while conscientious managers are susceptible to concentrate on safety, adopting cautious behaviors

The role of pretreatment parameters on seed germination and seedling growth of two fennel cultivars

    No full text
Fennel is one of the most important medicinal and spice plants and has become one of the most important economical medicinal plants in Mediterranean, and the Middle East. The germination ability and percentage are fundamental characteristics which influence the viability of the plants. Prechilling has meaningful influence on coleoptile length, radicle length, seedling length, germination percentage, mean time for germination and germination rate, but uniformity of seed germination did not significantly influenced by it. The cultivar effect was significant on coleoptile length, radicle length, seedling length, germination percentage and germination rate. However, mean time for germination and uniformity of seed germination did not significantly affected by cultivar. All experimental characteristics, except uniformity of seed germination, significantly influenced by hormone. The maximum coleoptile length, radicle length, seedling length, germination percentage and germination ratio was related to 45 days moist prechilling treatment. Isfahan cultivar also had obtained the highest coleoptile and radicle length, seedling length, germination percentage and germination ratio compare to Shiraz cultivar. It seems that application of endogenous GA3+KI and BA+KI concentration, which is provided mostly by chilling treatment, is the most effective factor for breaking the seed dormancy. On the basis of the results, usage of 45 days moist prechilling accompanied with application of GA3+KI and BA+KI in Isfahan cultivar was appropriate

Bupivacaine-loaded chitosan hydrogels for topical anesthesia in dentistry

    No full text
The paper describes the preparation of polymeric hydrogels, loaded with bupivacaine, which could represent a good alternative in clinical dentistry as local anesthetics. The hydrogels were prepared by condensation using an amidation reaction between a natural polymer (chitosan) and a synthetic one, poly[(maleic anhydride)-alt-(vinyl acetate)]. Infrared spectroscopy studies confirmed crosslinking through the presence of amide bonds, formed between the two types of polymer chains. Scanning electron microscopy results demonstrated that the hydrogels have a porous structure, the pore dimensions being non-uniform with diameters between 200 and 600 μm. Hydrogels presented good bupivacaine inclusion and release capacity whereas theoretical analysis confirmed the validity of the generalized fractal model, reinforcing a csavi-universal pattern of drug release. Cytotoxicity tests on human dermal fibroblasts revealed that the obtained hydrogels are not cytotoxic. In vivo, the bupivacaine-loaded hydrogels presented anesthetic effects after 15 min and no side effects were observed. This system has the advantage of alleviating or eliminating pain associated with invasive procedures and avoiding direct contact of the drug with tissues, leading thus to the prevention of side effects. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industr

Research regarding the influence of conservation by using deep – frozen methodology over the quality of some horticulture products

    No full text
Vegetables improve human life by means of the many nutrients they contain. The nutritional quality of frozen products is intensified by the quality of the raw material, which uses correct manufacturing practices in the preservation process, while horticultural products are stored at the appropriate temperature. Competing with new minimum food processing technologies, industrial freezing is the most satisfactory method for maintaining quality for long storage periods. The main purpose of this study is to determine the influence of a preservation process based on the use of the cold, of cryoanabiosis, respectively on fresh vegetables frozen using a domestic and industrial method. We monitored the possible qualitative changes after the storage of the frozen biological material and the difference between the application of a home preservation technology, respectively the application of an industrial preservation technology on the products under analysis. The main objectives of the study are to examine the quality of frozen vegetables by determining the sensory and physical-chemical characteristics of cold-preserved products. The study material to be analysed is represented by three species of vegetables, as follows: carrot (Daucus carota), root parsley (Petroselium crispum), respectively broccoli (Brassica oleracea). The sensory evaluation of the products studied showed that frozen products using the industrial system had superior characteristics compared to those frozen at home. It is found that after the freezing of horticultural products using a domestic and industrial method there were no significant differences in the results of physical and chemical tests, as these kept their nutritional value high. Regarding the pH results, the biggest differences were identified in the case of broccoli. Thus, as the frozen broccoli in the industrial system registered a value of 5.7, and the frozen broccoli in the domestic system a value of 6.58. Acidification of the product may occur due to the freezing of water in the cells, followed by an increasingly concentrated accumulation of cell fluid containing diluents and colloidal substances. The water content increased in the case of products frozen by using a domestic system, presenting higher values as compared to the humidity of industrial frozen products, but also compared to the reference values as follows: carrots and parsley registered a humidity of 90% and 86%, respectively. The higher value in the case of the humidity parameter is caused by a higher amount of released cell juice, due to a slow freezing which led to the formation of ice crystals or to the occurrence of the plasmolysis phenomenon. The soluble dry matter shows several differences. Products frozen at home have higher values compared to industrially frozen products. The most significant difference appears in the case of root parsley frozen at home with a value of 11%. Therefore, freezing showed the following advantages: the lowering of the temperature of the product below 0℃ ensured the keeping of the plant product longer, and most of the biochemical reactions were stopped during freezing and also the blocking of the multiplication of microorganisms took place

The study on the prevalence of Giardia sp. in bovines was performed by analysing the cases recorded at Dancu Research Station, the results showing that this is a protozoan, commonly found in bovine farms, being one of the main causes of diarrhoea in calves. The source of contamination with Giardia sp. is represented by drinking water, breast milk and environment. In the period 2017-2020, the cases of giardiosis diagnosed in pets at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine were analysed; a coinfection was found in dogs in a proportion of 64% with yeast cells, 22% with Cryptosporidium sp., 6% with Isospora sp. and only in 3% of cases Giardia sp. has been reported as the only pathogen involved in the clinical picture. The study on the prevalence of Giardia sp. in humans during 2017-2020 was performed using data provided by the Praxis Laboratory. The conclusions demonstrate the presence of a high rate of giardiosis in pets (dogs, cats), in farm animals (bovine), and in humans, each representing a source of contamination of the environment and of the other categories. The results showed for both humans and animals that drinking water can be a major source of infection with Giardia sp., requiring the much more frequent and rigorous control of drinking water

    Get PDF
New topical gel formulations based on sodium alginate and hyaluronic acid containing AS1411 aptamer-functionalized polymeric nanocapsules loaded with an antitumoral drug (5-Fluorouracil) were designed as an innovative approach for the skin cancer treatment. Several important analyses were used to characterize these obtained topical gel formulations, namely: rheological tests, permeation assays across Strat-M® artificial membrane, ex-vivo permeation assays across chicken skin membrane, haemolysis tests, skin irritation tests, in vitro cytotoxicity assay on human basal carcinoma cells and in vivo tests. Rheological tests revealed that apparent viscosity decreases with the increase of the shear rate, for analyzed samples, which demonstrates a shear thinning behavior. Low levels of hemolysis values which ranged between 0.03 and 0.55% suggested that the tested formulations did not induce red blood cell lysis.. The gel formulations containing nanocapsules loaded with 5-FU proved to be non-irritant. Furthermore, by study the ex-vivo diffusion properties across the chicken skin membrane, it was proved that nanoencapsulation enhance the permeability properties of 5-FU. In vitro cytotoxicity assay on TE 354.T (ATCC® CRL-7762™) human basal carcinoma cell line showed that the obtained formulations loaded with 5-Fluorouracil manifest an important cytotoxic effect. Finally, the presence of Langerhans CD68 cells-positive in the epidermis and epithelial sheath of dermal hair follicles suggests a specific activation, migration and retrieval of nanoparticles by these cells. Following the results obtained in this study we can appreciate that the obtained topical gel formulations have a favourable biosafety and good antitumor effects which makes them attractive for skin cancer treatment

Research on the action of mineralized water on the characteristics of ordinary chernozem

The agro-industrial complex of the Republic of Moldova operates in risky conditions. Due to its geographical location, the territory of the republic falls within the area with insufficient and unstable humidity. The annual amount of atmospheric precipitation varies between 380 and 550 mm. Long-term research has established that the main limiting natural factor in obtaining high and stable harvests is the low level of accessibility of plants to accessible water. In the conditions of the republic one of the most effective measures to optimize the soil moisture regime is irrigation. Obviously, it does not exclude the application of agrotechnical processes for storing water in the soil. Soil irrigation as a method of improving water regime has been known since ancient times, but so far there are a number of complicated problems related to the reaction of some soil types to changes in water regime and water quality used for irrigation. Thus, the irrigation of chernozems with mineralized water (> 3000 mg/l) does not cause essential changes in the soil adsorbent complex and does not lead to its secondary salinization. The works carried out aimed at testing and assessing the effectiveness of methods to prevent and combat soil degradation during irrigation. The results of the researches highlight the following: the use of good quality water in the irrigation of chernozems has as a consequence the weak decalcification of the plowed layer, the reduction of the hydrostability of the structure and its compaction; irrigation of chernozemic soils with surface and deep (alkaline) water leads to secondary alkalization and solonization, degradation of the structure, peptization of fine clay, secondary compaction and reduction of water permeability; the degrading effect of chernozems irrigation with water of poor quality can be mitigated by applying organo-calcium amendments or treating the water used with soluble calcium compounds. The experimental polygon from Cozești commune, Singerei district, is located on a straight slope with a south-eastern exposure, with a slope of 2%. The soil is presented by ordinary chernozem strongly deep humic clay-loam. It is irrigated for 9 years. The water used is deep water with an unfavorable chemical composition and a strongly alkaline reaction. The evolution of secondary pedological processes and changes in physical and chemical properties in irrigated soils were established by the method of "pair profiles" (irrigated soil and non-irrigated soil). This method is widely used in pedo-ameliorative study and is considered feasible in the quantitative determination of soil characteristics

Annual, unpretentious flowering species, Begonia semperflorens 'Big', stands out due to its aesthetic valences constant throughout the growing season. The compact appearance, the abundant and long lasting flowering, the dense and healthy foliage have caused it to be more and more frequently used in the landscaping of parks and urban gardens. This paper aims to study the behavioural pattern of the begonia 'Big' variety in vertical systems for green façades, in the climatic conditions of the N-E part of Europe. The experiment was carried out on height levels, applied to façades oriented towards the four cardinal points with the purpose to conduct a comparative analysis of behaviour, depending on the amount of natural light received specific to each orientation. The study found that Begonia semperflorens 'Big' grown in vertical systems behaves very well regardless of the cardinal orientation of the façade. It is noted, however, that better results were achieved on the north-facing façade in terms of survival rate and coverage
