    No full text
This study assessed the youths’ involvement in oil palm fruit processing activities in Ondo State, Nigeria. It described the socio-economic characteristics of youths involved in oil palm fruit processing activities, determined their level of involvement, examined their perception and identified constraints associated with their involvement. Multistage sampling procedure was employed to select 120 respondents from the study area. Interview schedule was employed to collect relevant data, which was analysed with SPSS software package. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise the data while inferential statistics were used to draw inference on hypothesis. The results show that majority (63.3%) were male, 95.8% had formal education with a mean age of 27.2 ± 2.7 years. Picking of fresh fruit bunches ( = 2.71), packaging ( = 2.60) and gathering of bunches ( = 2.50) were the major activities youth involved in. Higher percentage (57.9%) of the youth had favourable perception towards involvement in oil palm fruit processing activities. Lack of modern processing facilities ( =3.65) and funds/inadequate credit facilities ( = 3.65) were the prime constraints to their involvement. Number of labour (r = 0.7460; p≤0.01) and income (r = 0.601; p≤0.01) of the respondents were significantly related to youth involvement. The study concluded that youth had moderate involvement in oil palm processing activities. However, agricultural development stakeholders like government should provide adequate and functional credits facilities to these youths to encourage their involvement

Canine babesiosis is one of the most important vector-borne diseases worldwide that affects dogs regardless of age, breed or gender. The aim of this study was to corroborate the clinical signs of canine patients confirmed with babesiosis, the results of paraclinical investigations, as well as the choice of the therapeutic protocol. The present study was performed on 42 dogs referred to the Clinic of Parasitic Diseases from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Iasi with similar symptoms to canine babesiosis. After recording data regarding age, breed and gender of all dogs and the clinical examination of the patients, two peripheral blood samples were collected from each patient for the following investigations: Diff-quick stained blood smears and blood tests (hematological, biochemical, serologic). After analysis of blood smear, all the dogs (42/42) were positive for Babesia spp. and the most common clinical signs identified were: fever – 37/42 (88,1%), pale mucous membrane – 31/42 (73,8%) and hemoglobinuria – 31/42 (73,8%). The results of hematologic tests revealed thrombocythopenia – 40/42 and moderate to severe anemia. Further serological tests detected Babesia gibsoni antibodies in 2/42 blood samples. Depending on the results of the blood tests, the therapeutic dose of imizole was administered in a single dose or divided into two doses, administered within a maximum of 12 hours. In conclusion, the present study emphasizes the importance of paraclinical investigations in order to identify possible co-infections and adjust treatment in infected dogs

Biostimulants effects on photosynthesis process to basil plants

    No full text
Biostimulants are natural or synthetic substances that can be applied to seeds, plants, and soil. These substances cause changes in vital and structural processes in order to influence plant growth through the improvement of tolerance to abiotic stresses and increase seed and/or grain yield and quality. In addition, biostimulants reduce the need for fertilizers. Sweet basil is one of the most widespread spices in the world. Its dried leaves are used commonly as a flavoring in many food products. Biostimulants have the capacity to improving quality and quantity of essential oils from basil plants by stimulating physiological processes such as photosynthesis. This research was conducted to determine the effects of two biostimulants on photosynthesis processes of two basil cultivars, in greenhouse conditions. This study was carried in 2021 at the ICAM (Research Institute for Agriculture and Environment) Iasi under greenhouse condition. The biological material was represented by two basil cultivars (Ocimum citriodorum and Ocimum basilicum var. gigante napoletano). The bifactorial experience was conducted in a pots experiment in randomized blocks with three repetitions. The application of biostimulants (Bactamin and Terra-Sorb) was done every seven days by foliar spraying throughout the vegetation period. Research was focused on the influence of biostimulants on the photosynthesis process. Plants treated with biostimulants had higher values of the total chlorophyll content compared to the control group, which demonstrates an intensification of the photosynthesis process. The yield of the Bactamin stimulator gives better results in terms of the increase in chlorophyll content in the varieties studied and as a result, will also increase the production in essential oil

The seeds of four maize hybrids (Zea mays L.), including Porumbeni 180 (Por. 180), Bemo 203, Porumbeni 374 (Por. 374) and Porumbeni 427 (Por. 427 were used to investigate the effect of seed treatment with water (control) or ½ Hoagland nutrients media (½ NM) on the mobilization of seed reserves for germination and early growth of seedlings. Utilization of ½ NM provided an increase in the rate of endosperm mass included in the biomass of seedlings, while that consumed in respiration, on the contrary decreased, in comparison with the control. The seed metabolic efficiency (SME) has been shown to depend on both the type of corn hybrid and the nutrient media used for seed treatment and germination. The SME level of maize hybrids that germinated on ½ NM was significantly higher for Bemo 203 and other hybrids studied, being 2.4 and 2 times higher, respectively, than that of control seeds

In Romania there are industrial landfills with an underground position, a situation that involves an uncontrolled pollution phenomenon. A significant example is the landfills left over from the exploitation of salt deposits in the „Ocnele Mari” area, Vâlcea County. It consists of a cavern in which a sodium chloride solution remains. The pollution phenomenon is manifested inside by the propagation of the solution in the rock massif with an effect on the stability of the slope. The implosion of the cave causes the rock roof to collapse and the sodium chloride solution to be expelled to the surrounding area. The pollution phenomenon has a disaster character, having a special impact on the natural and social-human environment

In this paper are highlighted the main palynological characteristics of a popular genotype in the culture of ornamental plants, namely Tulipa gesneriana. Palynological investigations focused on: shape, color of pollen granules, exine ornamentation, size of pollen granules, number of germinative pores/pollen granule. The study is completed by establishing the germination capacity of pollen grains, for which tests of germination capacity were performed on carbohydrate-enriched artificial mediums in different concentrations. Carbohydrates added to the nutrient mediums were represented by sucrose and glucose, depending on which two categories of nutrient media were formed: sucrose mediums and glucose mediums. Tulipa gesneriana pollen has been found to have a predilection for sucrose-containing nutrients compared to glucose. The highest level of germination (90%) was achieved on the medium with a concentration of 5% sucrose. The results of this study are important for the taxonomy of this genotype and in breeding programs

    No full text
Several essential oils (EOs) can be used as natural alternatives to synthetic food additives in meat and meat products, especially as effective antibacterial agents. This study investigated how different levels of lavender essential oil (LEO) affected the microbiological and sensory properties of smoked pork sausages. Bacterial growth was followed for 9 days, including tests on days 3, 6, and 9. The smoked pork sausages were divided into two groups: the control group (C) without lavender essential oil and the test group (T) fortified with (0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3%). The APC and coliform counts indicated that lavender essential oil (LEO) enrichment of smoked sausages has high inhibition of APC and coliform. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were obtained with L. Angustifolia (0.2%) against both microorganisms. Both EOs caused a significant decrease in bacterial growth in smoked pork sausage stored for 6 and 9 days. Moreover, the results showed that the addition of EO significantly prolonged the odor of smoked pork sausage even at abusive temperature. However, the use of lavender essential oil (LEO) is partially limited due to its intense aroma, which may have negative organoleptic impact. Further studies are needed to enhance the sensory impact of samples enriched with lavender essential oil (LEO)
