An uncommon case of gastrointestinal foreign body in cat

    Get PDF
Gastrointestinal foreign bodies are commonly encountered in veterinary pathology. The patient may present a variety of clinical signs, depending on the shape of the swallowed object, as well as the site and extent of obstruction. The aim of this study is to describe an unusual case of linear gastrointestinal foreign body, in a 3-year-old cat, referred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Iasi, Surgery Department. The anamnesis and clinical examination suggested a gastrointestinal foreign body, subsequently confirmed by ultrasonography, therefore surgical intervention was the treatment of choice. After anesthesia, oral examination revealed an anchored thread around the base of the tongue which couldn’t be extracted by conservative methods, due to the traction resistance. Exploratory celiotomy and enterotomy were performed, the thread being entirely removed after it was freed from the tongue. The patient recovered uneventfully without postoperative complications

    No full text
This study investigated the effect of credit access on the adoption intensity of improved maize varieties in Osun State. A number of 150 maize farmers were selected through a multistage sampling procedure from using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, adoption index, and Tobit regression model were used to analyse the data collected. The results showed that Majority of maize farmers were over 40 years (52.6%), male (87%), and married (87%). The result also showed that majority of the farmers did not adopt improved maize varieties (55%) in the state. Swan 1 improved variety was majorly adopted (87.1%), while DMRESR- W variety was less adopted (62.9%) in the State. Just a few of maize farmers had access to credit in the State (20%). The mean adoption intensity in the State was observed to 62%. Based on adoption intensity of improved maize varieties, adopters were classified as partial adopters (65%) and full adopters (35%). Tobit regression estimates showed that credit access, household size, secondary occupation, years of education and extension contact have significant effect on the adoption intensity of improved maize varieties. In accordance with the findings, we therefore recommend that microfinance institutions should look attentively at scaling up their credit services to enhancing adoption intensity of improved maize varieties

Epidemiological monitoring and antimicrobial resistance profiles of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli isolates among breeder hens

Pathogenic Escherichia coli of breeder hens in most of the cases involve to use antibiotic therapy, but for better results it is important to identify the bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics in order to avoid the selection of resistance strains. Also it causes important economic losses by morbidity wich lead to decreasing egg production, decreased growth rates ,additional costs for treatment and prophylactic measures. The colibacilosis disease may occur by poor environmental conditions wich lead to decline of immunity status of hens. The obtained results showed that a high proportion (78% and 55%) of E. coli-positive samples were resistant to Ofloxacin and Gentamicin what can be concerned for poultry farmers from Republic of Moldova, due to often uses of this antibiotics in rearing proces of poultry, but high frequency of resistant isolates against Doxycycline Hydrochloride (88%) might be explained by high rates of use as prophylactic measures in breeder flock and poultry rearing. It should also be mentioned that the hight rates of antimicrobial resistance in hens suggests the possibility of vertical transmission from hatcheries, through the eggs to the next generations of poultry

Efficacy of alkaline-treated soy waste biomass for the removal of heavy-metal ions and opportunities for their recovery

In this study, soy waste biomass (SW) resulting from oil extraction was treated with alkaline solution, and the obtained material (Na-SW) was used as biosorbent for the removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) ions from aqueous media. The performance of this biosorbent was ex amined in batch systems, at different initial metal ion concentrations and contact times (pH 3.4; 5 g of biosorbent/L). Isotherm and kinetic modeling was used to calculate the equilibrium and kinetics of the biosorption processes. The maximum biosorption capacity, calculated from the Lang muir isotherm model, followed the order Zn(II) (0.49 mmol/g) > Cd(II) (0.41 mmol/g) ≈ Pb(II) (0.40 mmol/g), while the kinetics of biosorption processes fit the pseudo-second-order model. Three cycles of biosorption/desorption were performed to estimate the reusability of Na-SW biosorbent, and the regeneration efficiency was higher than 97% in all cases. The practical applicability of Na-SW biosorbent in treating of wastewater contaminated with Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) ions was examined using simulated wastewater samples, and the main quality characteristics of the effluents obtained after treatment were evaluated. All these aspects highlight the potential applicability of Na-SW for large-scale wastewater treatment

Canine tick-borne diseases are an emerging problem within Romania and also throughout the European Countries. This threat comes not just from Lyme disease which is endemic in our country, but also from other tick-borne diseases as well as ehrlichiosis. The present study consisted in screening of IgG class antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi and Ehrlichia canis on 92 urban household dogs (48 females and 44 males) from Iași. The sampling took place during March to June 2021, in three veterinary clinics. The results of the serological testing revealed four positive dogs: one for IgG anti-E. canis and three for IgG anti-Borrelia burgdoferi s.l. Although the proportion of the sampled dog sex was almost equal, all positive animals were adult females. Our results highlight the silent circulation of the two pathogens in the studied area. These tick-borne pathogens are a significant medical concern to canine health. Changing tick distributions, pet travel and nonspecific clinical signs can make identifying infected pets challenging, so is very important to keep all dogs on appropriate, effective tick prevention year-round

Ostrinia nubilals Hbn. larvae it attacks many species of plants belonging to very different families. Maize is recognized as the preferred host, but the larvae attack hemp, sorghum, millet, hops, peppers or weeds (Echinochloa crus galli, Artemisia vulgaris). In maize crops the larvae are identified on different parts of the plant (stem, cobs, inflorescence) where it favors the installation of pathogens, weaken the resistance of the plant being prone to break or depreciate the grains. At hemp, the larvae feed on the stem tissues, including the support system and the conducting vessels. The effect of the attack produced by larvae is materialized by young plants stagnation in vegetation and the decrease of production capacity in more mature plants. Sorghum shows tolerance to larval attack especially in the booting phenophase, tolerance decreasing to flowering, which is higher than that found in maize. This paper presents the results obtained on the attack of Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn produced at maize, hemp and sorghum in the period 2019-2021. At the analyzed crops, the larvae produced attacks between 3.65% (sorghum) and 32.63% (maize). The maize crops were the most affected by the larval attack, registering on average an attack of 32.63%. In hemp, the larval attack was on average between 2% and 21%. At sorghum crops it was found that the larval attack was reduced to sporadic, between 2% and 9%

Apricot trees were planted in the spring of 2018. The trees were driven according to the Trident system. The Kyoto variety had a higher resistance to the late return temperatures, which in the conditions of the northern area registered productions of 17.03 t/ha in the third year after planting

Mesostigmatid mites as a piece of the bioindicators puzzle

    No full text
Mites belonging to the order Mesostigmata have different types of life, those which populate soil habitats and litter being generally free living predators. Predatory mites play a leading role in biological control, but they are considered useful in bioindication, also. This study explored in a comparative way the edaphic gamasid communities from a series of forest ecosystems, meadows and agroecosystems in order to evaluate the impact of natural and anthropic factors and to highlight the bioindicator value of these mites. Both a quantitative and a qualitative analysis were performed. The degree of anthropization could be evidenced at the level of all analyzed ecosystems. A reduction of the number of species and individuals in the ecosystems marked by human interventions was observed. Generally, the phenomenon was more pronounced in forest ecosystems than in the praticolous ones. From the point of view of the ecological peculiarities of the species, a differentiation was noticed that in natural forests the silvicolous species are dominating while in plantations, meadows and agroecosystems the praticolous ones are the majority. In the case of natural forests the best represented family is Zerconidae with 2 genera and 8 species. In the rest of the studied ecosystems on the first place is Hypoaspididae with 1, 2 or 3 genera and 5 species or even more
