Nutrition and Physical Activity in Middle School Aged Students
My research was to help enhance the behaviors and knowledge of the students at Cape Fear Christian Academy in nutrition and physical activity. The students participated in a 4-week program after taking a pre-assessment on nutrition and physical activity. Once the 4-week program was over they had a post-assessment to take to see if their was a significant difference and increase in their knowledge from the pre-assessment to the post-assessment. It was found that this 4-week program increased knowledge and ability in nutrition and physical activity. There was an increase of correct answers on the pre and post physical activity questions and nutrition questions. There was a significant difference in the overall pre and post scores as well
Increasing Patient Compliance with the Recommended Plan of Care for Pregnant Women with Gestational or Type 2 Diabetes
The goal of this project was to determine if the implementation of a diabetes in pregnancy care plan appointment improves patient compliance to visits with diabetes educators in an obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) office. The sample included all pregnant women with a diagnosis of either type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes mellitus. Twelve charts were reviewed for pre-intervention data and 11 charts were reviewed for post-intervention data. Retrospective and prospective chart reviews were used to collect pre-intervention and postintervention data on patients who meet the project inclusion criteria. The primary outcome
measure was the percent of scheduled diabetes educator appointments attended. The secondary outcome measure was provider satisfaction regarding project success. Although it seemed there was an increase in overall compliance, a Mann-Whitney U test revealed the results were not statistically significant for compliance rates pre- and post-intervention. Providers were sent a
survey after project completion and only 1 survey was returned. The respondent was overall satisfied with the project and found the interventions to be a great asset to the OBGYN office. This quality improvement project provided a standardized educational intervention for patients with diabetes in pregnancy by implementing evidence-based knowledge into practice. Future research will be needed to examine ways to provide optimal care for patients with diabetes in pregnanc

Utilizing English and Spanish Multimodal Low Literacy Diabetes Self-Management Education to Improve Diabetes Knowledge: A Quality Improvement Project in a Low-Cost Clinic
Background:
Health literacy is a vital competence when working toward successful management of Type II
Diabetes (T2D). The ability to understand, assess, and apply health information in order to make judgements and decisions every day to maintain or improve quality of life is important.
Sufficient health literacy is linked to an individual’s knowledge, motivation, and self-efficacy
resulting in better health conditions and self-efficacy in people with T2D (Finbraten et al., 2020).
Objective:
This quality improvement project aimed at initiating health literacy screenings and utilizing
English and Spanish multimodal low literacy diabetes self-management education (DSME) to
increase diabetes knowledge in adult patients with T2D.
Methods:
A Registered Dietitian health educator in the health and wellness program of a community health center administered the Brief Health Literacy Screening (BHLS) and a pre-intervention Spoken Knowledge in Low Literacy in Diabetes Scale (SKILLD) to 20 adult patients with T2D to screen literacy levels and diabetes knowledge prior to their DSME session. The DSME was then offered in English and Spanish with low literacy handouts and audiovisual videos. A post-intervention SKILLD survey was conducted one week after the DSME to test the association between low health literacy DSME and diabetes knowledge.
Results:
Thirty-four patients signed up to participate in the DSME group session, but only twenty-four
patients attended the low literacy screening and low literacy DSME session. The BHLS
screening indicated that 41.7 % of the participants had adequate health literacy, 37.5 % had
moderate health literacy, and 20.8 % had limited health literacy. A two-tailed sample t-test was
conducted to examine whether the mean difference of the pre-intervention SKILLD survey and the post intervention SKILLD survey were significantly impacted by the language specific low
literacy DSME session. An alpha value of .05, t(23) = -4.10, p < .001 revealed that low literacy
DSME educational handouts and audiovisual videos significantly improved diabetes knowledge
in the participants of this intervention.
Conclusion:
The primary outcome of administering health literacy screenings on patients with T2D was
successful. Evidence of limited health literacy and diabetes knowledge were noted in several
participants prior to the DSME session. The post-intervention SKILLD survey revealed
significant improvements in diabetes knowledge with the utilization of language specific
multimodal low-literacy DSME
Depression in Diabetes: Utilizing a Depression Management Algorithm in Primary Care
Background: Patients with diabetes are more prone to depression because of the debilitating nature of coping with a chronic disease long term (Polacsek et al., 2021). Screening for depression in this population is critical and should be done to meet standards of care for patients with diabetes that are recommended by the United States Preventative Service Task Force (USPSTF) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA). There are a number of screening tools available with the Patient Health
Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) screening tool for depression being one that is evidence-based and widely utilized (Owens-Gary et al., 2018).
Objective: The primary objective of this quality improvement (QI) project was to increase screening, education, and referrals for depression in patients concurrently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), using the PHQ-9. The secondary objective was to increase provider confidence in utilizing the PHQ-9 to screen for depression in patients with T2DM.
Methods: Healthcare providers who are treating patients diagnosed with diabetes in a primary care practice will be the primary population. The principal investigator (PI) will track all patients diagnosed with diabetes seen by the participants and screen for use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to screen for depression. Comparative data was collected using a retrospective chart review to collect pre- intervention depression screening for adult patients with T2DM over a three-month period. The goal of the QI project was to increase depression screening with utilization of the PHQ-9.
Results: The chi-square test of independence revealed statistically significant increases in depression screening (72.42, p < .001), education (52.56, p <.001), and referrals (6.0, p <.014) of patients with Type 2 diabetes with implementation of the CCNC Depression Management Algorithm and PHQ-9 screening tool. The PHQ-9 results revealed that nearly 40% of the patients screened had some level of depression. The provider’s confidence level in utilizing the PHQ-9 survey increased in all six
categories assessed in the provider confidence survey.
Conclusions: Implementation of the PHQ-9 instrument to screen for depression was successful and sustainable in increasing the number of patients with Type 2 diabetes screened, educated, and referred
An Analysis of College Students’ Nutrition Practices
Poor nutrition is associated with half of the leading causes of death for adults and has influenced the alarming obesity rates. Negative nutrition practices and knowledge are at the forefront of this issue and are often developed earlier in individuals’ life. College is an important transition period for most individuals to develop habits, but it seems that unhealthy ones are being formed. Nutritional behavior in early adulthood often impacts the nutrition choices later in life, which then affects health. This study was conducted to better understand the nutrition practices of college students to help inform campus wide programming. This was a cross-sectional research design that involved 103 undergraduate students (mean age= 20.5, SD= ±3.6) at Lenoir-Rhyne University. A survey was sent out to all undergraduate students via their university email, and the data was gathered on Google forms. Microsoft Excel was used to formulate descriptive statistics on food habits, nutritional struggles, and nutrition attitudes. The majority of students eat their meals at home (36.9%), the school cafeteria (30.1%), and on and off campus fast food/restaurants (29.1%). The largest barrier for college students to eat healthy is time and availability of food, with money being the third highest barrier. When surveyed on struggling to afford food, 44.7% of the participants stated that they have. Analysis determined that there is not a significant difference (p=0.29) between gender and how healthy students view their eating habits as well as no correlation between skipping meals (5.18 ± 3.41) and GPA (3.52± 0.51). (r=0.20, p=0.10). University students are lacking in time and resources, which is contributing to poor nutritional practices. This research has gathered data on the food habits of college students and showed the areas where programming would be beneficial, like with targeted education and programs to address student food insecurity. Campus wide programming needs to be developed and implemented to help fill this need for young adults to positively influence their current and future health
The Impact of Self-myofascial Trigger Point Release on Fatigue Management and Performance in Female College Basketball Players
Basketball represents a sport that often causes substantial musculoskeletal injury. Female basketball players report delayed muscle activation, interfering with their ability to land properly. Fatigue also coincides with delayed neuromuscular activation. Both men and women reported decreased hamstring, quadricep, and gastrocnemius activation when fatigue was present (Gehring, Melnyk, & Gollhofer, 2009). Muscular trauma presents itself as myofascial pain, signaling improper muscle function. Travell and Simons (1999) define a trigger point as an irritated band of skeletal muscle that is painful once compressed, stretched, or contracted. Trigger points have been reported to cause increased muscle fatigability and altered muscular activation patterns (Gerwin, 1999). By implementing trigger point release therapy, the taut muscle band can return to normal length and functionality, reducing the risk of fatigue-related performance hindrances. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of a once-weekly self-myofascial trigger point therapy on the vertical jump performance of female basketball players during regular season. The intervention group participated in trigger point therapy by utilizing a lacrosse ball to release trigger points in major muscle groups. Both control and intervention groups performed vertical jump testing weekly to measure power output and how fatigue over the competitive season effected the jump heights. The longitudinal study concluded no statistical significance between the control and intervention group vertical jump trends over the year; however, practical significance existed. The control group experienced a gradual decline in jump performance, whereas the intervention group maintained jump height over the course of the season. This research focused on the prevalence of fatigue on athletic performance and introduced a potential method to eliminating decreases in performance over a long competitive season

Implementation of 'My Birth Control' Tool
To evaluate the effect of the My Birth Control tool on patient provider and staff satisfaction of contraceptive counseling Methods The provider in a women s health clinic in Western North Carolina offered the My Birth Control tool to females ages 18 through 45 who were currently not pregnant and not desiring pregnancy within 6-months of enrollment and who were wanting to discuss starting or switching contraceptive methods during their visit Before use of the tool the provider asked the patient what method they were considering and mainly focused on that method When using the tool the provider discussed multiple methods of interest as indicated on the printout Measurement of patient satisfaction was determined by using the Patient-Centered Contraceptive Counseling Likert scale and the provider and office staff experience was measured via qualitative interviews Results Differences in the patient satisfaction scores before and after the My Birth Control implementation were not significant Both provider and staff had positive experiences in terms of implementation of counseling integration of patients values and preferences patient knowledge of contraceptive methods and time efficiency Conclusion Use of the My Birth Control tool had no effect on patient satisfaction The intervention did have a positive impact on providers satisfaction of contraceptive counseling as well as their time efficiency
Examining the effects of mindful coloring to reduce stress and anxiety in college students
Research identifies considerable prevalence of stress among the college-aged population, requiring the need of effective coping strategies. The present research experiment investigated the effect of mindfulness coloring on college-aged students’ blood pressure and heart rate. College-aged participants from a women’s athletic team and sorority (N = 20) were randomly assigned to a control or experimental group. Prior to each intervention blood pressure, heart rate, and STAI scale responses were collected. Following the pre-intervention data collection, each group was instructed to begin their intervention, mindful coloring or talking amongst themselves without devices for 10 minutes. Following the intervention participants’ blood pressure, heart rate, rate of perceived stress, intervention’s effectiveness, and future use of intervention were collected. Each participant was also classified as either a somatic, cognitive, or cognitive somatic stressor. There were strong correlations that those who perceived lower stress levels found their intervention effective and would continue to participate in said intervention. There were no statistically significant findings that mindful coloring was more effective than the control group. Given the small sample size, more research should be conducted on the effectiveness of mindful coloring in relation to the type of stressor a participant is, as this present research was limited by the number of volunteer participants from each organization
