Revitalizing Heritage Places and Memories for Sustainable Tourism
Heritage, tangible or intangible, is a vital expression of societies, revealed in the generational transmission of material testimonies, customs, traditions, and values. Revitalizing places through heritage and cultural memories for sustainable tourism not only centers on preserving cultural, historical, and natural landmarks but also holds the potential to significantly foster economic growth and promote cultural, environmental, and social sustainability, offering a promising and prosperous future for these places.
Heritage places, as the historical actions of societies over time, embody the collective knowledge passed down through generations, giving places identity, diversity, and uniqueness. Similarly, memories play a crucial and emotional role in preserving collective identity and reinforcing the cultural significance of heritage. These elements serve as an educational tool, a means of conveying historical knowledge, and a way to strengthen emotional connections to places. However, the responsibility for preserving cultural heritage lies with us all. Fragile, irreplaceable, and non-renewable cultural heritage is increasingly vulnerable to threats such as rapid urbanization, climate change, globalization, and destructive and transformative pressures. Historical landscapes with tourism potential, which are facing decline, degradation, or destruction, urgently require stronger protection measures and policies aimed at regeneration, preservation, and conservation. In regions impacted by the destruction from modern socio-economic activities and policies that often overlook heritage values, regenerating and safeguarding historical landscapes is a key priority.
This Special Issue aims to present methodological approaches for revitalizing, conserving, and safeguarding endangered historical places and their significant cultural heritage and natural landmarks. This approach not only intends to use dynamic safeguard and (re)generative processes for place development but also to support local communities, enrich visitor experiences, and help protect cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations. This initiative seeks to cultivate a common vision rooted in a sustainable viewpoint that supports sustainable living, preserves local culture, and promotes collaborative engagement in regenerative activities, offering hope for a brighter future.
Preserving historical knowledge and intrinsic cultural values, such as authenticity and originality, enables the discovery of sustainable uses and promotes local development, which is closely connected to heritage. Planning and managing tourism and, at the same time, revitalizing and promoting historical sites while adapting to the local social and cultural environment is a challenging mission
Industrial tourism as a factor of competitiveness for industrial companies
Tourism is experiencing significant growth in Portugal and various parts of the world, emerging as a significant economic activity in many countries. Industrial tourism, as a specialized segment of this broader activity, is closely linked with industrial enterprises and the living heritage of industrial sites. This makes analysing the relationship between tourism and the industry highly relevant for the successful interaction between these sectors. Industrial tourism encompasses visits to sites of contemporary, historical, or future significance, including both operational and abandoned facilities, as well as prospective industrial locations.
The primary objective of this thesis is to explore how industrial tourism can enhance the competitiveness of industrial companies. This entails evaluating the benefits, challenges, barriers, and opportunities associated with industrial tourism, as well as identifying key strategies that can positively impact this relationship. Addressing this objective from the perspective of industrial companies is essential to fill a gap identified in the literature on industrial tourism.
The research presented in this thesis was conducted using a diversified methodology, as detailed in Chapters 2 through 5. The research includes four studies employing the following methodologies: 1) Systematic Literature Review and bibliometric study, 2) Questionnaire survey, and 3) Delphi Methodology.
The findings highlight the main strengths of industrial tourism for industrial companies, framed within a business-oriented approach. While company strategy and culture can present barriers to the implementation of industrial tourism, integrating industrial tourism into a company's strategy and culture can lead to diversification, foster the introduction of new knowledge, and stimulate business innovation and competitiveness.
Given that industrial tourism represents a service distinct from the primary activities of industrial companies, its integration presents numerous challenges that must be carefully analysed. This analysis is crucial for ensuring that industrial tourism is effectively integrated, accepted, and promoted within the company.
In the final phase of this thesis, practical contributions are presented, focusing on various areas within industrial companies and the role of different stakeholders. The results have been systematically organized according to different functional areas of business.
Finally, the limitations encountered during the research are discussed, along with suggested avenues for future research, aiming for continuous growth and improvement in the field of industrial tourism.O Turismo encontra-se em forte desenvolvimento em Portugal e em diferentes zonas do mundo, sendo considerado uma importante atividade económica nos diferentes países.
The impact of perceived ageism on psychological distress: Insights into the role of subjective vitality
Age discrimination is prevalent in society and has significant, far-reaching effects on individual distress. Additionally, loss of energy and fatigue are natural aspects of aging that can further potentiate psychological distress (depression, stress, and anxiety). Although the effects of ageism have been extensively studied, the moderating role of subjective vitality in the relationship between age discrimination and psychological distress has received far less attention. A total of 792 Portuguese participants from three distinct age groups (18–39, 40–59, and 60+) participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected through a structured self-report questionnaire, which included measures of perceived ageism, subjective vitality, stress, depression, and anxiety. Multivariate analyses of variance and moderated regression analyses were performed on the data. While an increased perception of positive ageism was found throughout the life cycle, results also indicated the highest levels of perceived negative ageism, anxiety, and depression among younger and older participants. Perceived ageism, both negative and positive, was positively connected to dimensions of psychological distress. Further, the effect of perceived negative ageism on stress and anxiety depends on the level of subjective vitality. The practical implications of the results to diminish the negative impacts of ageism are discussed
A statistical duality for Random Matching of Agents
We propose a statistical duality among the preferences and endowments of the agents. Under this duality, the logarithmic prices of random trades among agents in a decentralized economy converge in expectation to the logarithm of the Walrasian equilibrium price in a centralized economy
What do children with above-average abilities understand about financial literacy?
Metaphors help to simplify complex concepts, making them more accessible and understandable for children. Children can build a more concrete understanding of these concepts by associating abstract financial ideas with familiar situations or objects. The present study aims to explore what children with above-average abilities understand by financial literacy, using words and images as tools of expression. During a workshop, 22 children with above-average abilities participated in two tasks, one individual and one group task. The results showed that “save” (90.9%), “money” (63.9%), “invest” (59.1%), and “bank” (54.5%) are the words most strongly associated with the concept of financial literacy among the children. Regarding images, money (M = 1.77), a clock or calendar (M = 2.50), a pig (M = 2.75), and a house (M = 2.84) were identified as the most representative symbols of financial literacy for this group of children. In the group task, children perceive financial literacy mainly as managing and using money to satisfy needs and desires. The results can inform educators about the need to adapt educational materials to match children’s level of understanding better, promoting more effective and accessible financial education
Challenges of health and ageing in Portugal's population: Promote dignity and non-discrimination
The article discusses the challenges that arise from the population's increasing longevity and the need to address complex physical and mental health issues to ensure high-quality health services for older people. It emphasises the importance of reflecting on and addressing these challenges to ensure there are more means and policies in the future. Based on a qualitative methodology, the analysis draws on international legal instruments, public health policy frameworks, and scientific literature concerning ageing, health systems, and the legal implications of age-based discrimination. The WHO's Decade of Healthy Ageing 2020–2030 plan highlights the need for changes to promote healthy ageing. To meet the needs of older people, integrated care, long-term care, and primary health care services centred on the elderly are necessary. Additionally, awareness-raising campaigns on ageism and the prevention of age discrimination are crucial. Discrimination can have a detrimental effect on the provision of healthcare and the health of older people. While establishing or re-establishing formal equality for older people is important, it is not sufficient to guarantee their dignity. It is crucial to ensure the dignity and non-discrimination of older people through positive measures
NLP on text messages using sentimentality investigation
E-commerce is becoming more and more popular in this digital era since it allows customers to order things online and have them delivered right to their doorsteps. Reviews now have more significance as consumers use them to make informed decisions about what to buy. By classifying and learning from reviews, machine learning might help with the laborious work of sifting through hundreds of them. Sentiment analysis is a fundamental function of natural language processing (NLP) that focuses on comprehending attitudes and emotions. This research employs supervised learning techniques to analyze the feelings of product evaluations on Amazon. Thousands of reviews in various categories may be found in the dataset that was used. Recurrent neural networks (RNNs), among other NLP models, are tested for the purpose of classifying reviews into positive, negative, and neutral sentiments. The models are evaluated by applying recall, accuracy, and precision. Investigations are being conducted on the implications of sentiment analysis findings for companies and consumers using the Amazon platform. This study provides information on sentiment analysis on the dataset from Amazon and its useful applications. E-commerce is growing in popularity, and machine learning-based sentiment analysis might help evaluate massive volumes of data and effectively identify emotions. For the purpose of classifying emotions, a variety of machine learning techniques have been used, such as K-means clustering, decision trees (DTs), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), support vector machines (SVMs), and Bayesian networks (BNs). This study compares previous research and offers a real-time sentiment analysis system to monitor common feelings and provide recommendations that users would find acceptable. A key component of natural language processing (NLP) is sentiment analysis, which classifies sentiment polarity. This study offers a generic method for classifying sentiment in online product reviews from Amazon.com and aims to address problems in sentiment analysis. Investigations into categorization at the sentence and review levels are conducted, with encouraging outcomes. There is also mention of future work on sentiment analysis
