    No full text
The aim of this study is to assess the opportunity offered by Transitional Justice mechanisms in The Gambia for the recognition of violence against LGBT people and to foster a path toward decriminalisation of same-sex intimacy. Under Yayah Jammeh rule, the violence against LGBT as a pattern of persecution and hatred. The State persecution policy placed the country as one of the most intolerant African nations against LGBT people. The outcome of the 2016 Gambian elections changed the course of politics in Gambia, and in 2018 a Truth and Reconciliation Commission was installed to deal with a past of violence and autocracy, in 2018. This article aims to map the developments regarding violence against LGBT people and highlights the importance to include all forms of violence as a healing strategy in transitional justice. Also, it aims to assess how effective may be these mechanisms to decriminalisation of same-sex acts in transitional societies

Acculturation and adaptation of international students at Portuguese universities

    No full text
The importance of understanding the adaptation of international students is particularly relevant to the expansion of the internationalization of higher education. This paper examines various psychosocial features with regard to the intercultural relations of international students (IS) in Portugal. This country is receiving an increasing number of IS. Two key components of intercultural relations are acculturation and adaptation. As regards the acculturation process, we examine studies on cultural identity, acculturation strategies, and perceived discrimination. As regards psychological adaptation, we examine studies on several indicators of subjective well-being (overall well-being, satisfaction with life, satisfaction with academic life, satisfaction with migration life), and loneliness. Finally, it is reviewed research on sociocultural adaptation. This set of reviewed studies on international students is consonant with the perspective that most migrant people adapt well in the society of settlement, notwithstanding the difficulties found across the intercultural contact. A relevant contribution to the acculturation field was the demonstration that sociocultural adaptation difficulty fully mediated the relationships of perceived discrimination and two indicators of psychological adaptation, satisfaction with life and loneliness. This underlying relationship of perceived discrimination with psychological adaptation means that programs to decrease sociocultural adaptation difficulties among international students may help to improve their psychological adaptation. Several other practical recommendations can be drawn from this set of studies

On Relational Histories of Spatial Law and Transgression

    No full text
This chapter explores a particular aspect of spatial transgression, based on Henri Lefebvre’s conception of space–time as a category that involves both the built environment and social space, and inspired by the work of urbanist Ananya Roy and architectural historian Nezar AlSayyad on inhabitation under conditions of urban informality. My interest in the latter arose from my embodied, situated knowledge as a Lisboner, intrigued that Urban Informality did not include a chapter on an European city. Growing up, I often did not have school in the afternoons, and with a couple of other unwitting teenage derivists, took buses to the end of the line, and walked around. Much later, when I started preliminary doctoral fieldwork and walking around the informally created subdivi sion of Casal de Cambra (Fig. 3.1), the motivations of the first dwellers were both unexpected and sensible: they had moved from central Lisbon in the 1960s due to a lack of affordable housing, instead of being the rural migrants described in most accounts

Care4Mommies in action: Study protocol for promoting maternal psychological adjustment in the perinatal period [comunicação oral: poster]

    No full text
Becoming a mother is a life-changing event that requires mothers’ emotional regulation skills, namely self-compassion, to facilitate this transition. Compassion-based interventions (CBIs) may be useful, but their application to promote maternal wellbeing and mother-baby bonding has been scarcely considered. The current work aims to explore the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a CBI applied during pregnancy on the well-being and quality of mother-baby bonding at postpartum. To do so, two interlinked studies will be conducted. Study 1 will use a mixed-method design to investigate the acceptability and feasibility of the intervention. Nurses practicing in prenatal services and pregnant women will be asked, via focus group, on their anticipated acceptability of the CBI so that it can be tailored to the context and the individual’s needs. Then, those pregnant women will be offered the CBI as asked for pre- and post-intervention quantitative data on self-compassion related constructs, maternal-fetal attachment, and mental health; they will also be asked for their qualitative appraisal of procedure of the intervention. This will inform necessary adjustment to the CBI. Study 2 will then use a pilot cluster randomized trial to investigate the efficacy of the CBI. Mothers enrolled in group birth preparation courses (i.e., TAU) will be randomly enrolled to the CBI plus TAU or the CBI alone and assessed at pre-intervention, post-intervention prepartum, and 3-months follow at postpartum. They will be asked for quantitative data on the same constructs assessed in Study 1, except for maternal-fetal attachment that will be replaced with mother-baby bonding at follow-up. This work will allow for the development and initial efficacy evaluation of a tailored intervention that may contribute to mother’s well-being and their ability to cope with becoming a mother and bonding with their baby, which in turn may facilitate the child’s later emotional, social and cognitive development

This methodology facilitated the collection of empirical data concerning MySide’s current brand perception and communication practices, as well as inputs necessary for the construction of the proposed guide. The outcome of this research is a detailed and actionable Branding Guide intended for internal use by MySide’s team. Given the company’s current communication challenges and the imperative to reinforce its competitive advantage, this deliverable represents a strategic asset of signifi cant relevance

Matutinidade - vespertinidade, memória prospetiva e adesão à terapia endócrina em mulheres com cancro da mama

    No full text
Adherence to endocrine therapy is crucial for the effectiveness of breast cancer treatment but can be influenced by individual and contextual factors. This study aimed to characterise adherence patterns among Portuguese breast cancer survivors and to examine the relationship between chronotype, prospective memory, compensatory strategies, psychological distress, and medication adherence. The sample included 84 women (M = 47.9; SD = 8.5; age range 28–64) undergoing endocrine therapy. Chronotype, prospective memory, psychological distress, and adherence were assessed using self-report measures. Among participants, 37% were taking tamoxifen and 25.2% exemestane, with an association observed between chronotype and medication timing. Results showed that chronotype was not directly associated with adherence. However, women with a morning preference made more frequent use of external compensatory strategies to manage prospective memory difficulties, which mediated the relationship between morningness–eveningness and treatment discipline. Adherence to endocrine therapy emerged as a multifactorial phenomenon. Tailored interventions promoting prospective memory training and the use of compensatory strategies, combined with distress management and adjusting medication timing to chronotype, may optimise therapeutic adherence

Taxation on non-recoverable packaging as a sustainability measure in tourist-intensive regions

    No full text
The main objective of this paper is the examining the legislative measures the Portuguese government took regarding single-use packaging and how these fiscal instruments constitute a sustainability measure in tourist-intensive regions. The application of the polluter pays principle necessarily leads to envi-ronmental taxation as an instrument for preventing, restoring and combating pollution. Taxes are used to raise funds for environmental protection. From this perspective, the tax principle requires that the costs of pollution be borne by those responsible. In an extra-fiscal way, it encourages a conservative op-erating environment and combats polluting behaviour

Maternal gatekeeping and paternal self-efficacy and mental health: The mediation of dyadic adjustment

    No full text
Although underexplored, maternal gatekeeping can negatively interfere in the experience of fatherhood, leading to negative family outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the mediation role of dyadic adjustment in the association between maternal gatekeeping and paternal self-efficacy and mental health. A sample of 142 fathers of children aged between 0 months and 10 years completed self-reported measures of maternal gatekeeping, dyadic adjustment, parenting self-efficacy, and mental health. Lower perception of maternal gate-opening behaviors and higher perception of maternal gate-closing behaviors were associated with lower paternal self-efficacy and higher mental health problems. The association between maternal gatekeeping and paternal self-efficacy and mental health problems was mediated by dyadic adjustment. Findings suggested the importance of considering dyadic dimensions to understand the association between maternal gatekeeping and paternal self-efficacy and mental health problems. Parenting interventions aiming to promote paternal self-efficacy and mental health should adopt a couple-focused approach and target maternal gatekeeping

A new hotel classification model combining guest reviews with official hotel classification systems: Bridging expert and consumer ratings

    No full text
This paper explores the potential of combining online guest reviews with hotel classification systems, focusing on the feasibility of incorporating such reviews at the star-classification level. Leveraging machine learning techniques on a database of Portuguese hotels and their corresponding ratings on Booking.com, this study reveals a weak association between official hotel star categories and mean review scores of satisfaction items rated by users during the review process, suggesting a discrepancy between official star-classifications and consumer expectations and experiences. Based on the results, a new classification model is proposed, which integrates a classification system based on Booking.com reviews alongside traditional star categories, aiming to complement hotel star-classifications with a further quality dimension as perceived by customers through online reviews. This model provides travellers with more informative and reliable information, facilitating decision-making in the hotel selection process
