    No full text
Historically, the participation of women in political activity in Brazil and Portugal has been a minority, with an incipient number of female candidates in each election when compared to male candidates, configuring female underrepresentation in legislative houses. Aiming to change this reality, the Brazilian State instituted affirmative actions aimed at guaranteeing women's access to candidacies. Through amendments to Law n.° 9.504/1997, the Brazilian State imposed on political parties the obligation to fill a minimum of 30% of the vacancies for candidates with women. In Portugal, the Parity Law established measures to encourage female participation in the country's political life. The background to women's participation in politics in Brazil and Portugal, legislative developments until the adoption of the electoral quota system will be analyzed, as well as statistical data of the last 9 elections in Brazil. A critical analysis will be made regarding the quota regime adopted by both countries and whether it has guaranteed parity between men and women in the composition of parliaments. The research will extend to the party environment, the setting for the definition of candidacies in elections. At the end, proposals are presented for measures with the potential to guarantee women's access to candidacies and the occupation of seats in parliaments

It is widely recognized the role of the banking system for economic development. The European banking sector has undergone structural changes marked by financial globalization, liberalization and banking deregulation that have change the way in which banking institutions operate. The new competitive environment promoted the adoption of a strategic behavior and the financialization of the economy has changed corporate behavior and banking business models with an increase in risk-taking. The prevalence of excessive leverage brought some concerns regarding risk and financial stability and the 2007 global financial crisis raised the fears of financial uncertainty and its impacts on European countries

Kinematic Biomarkers of Functional Disability in Older Adults: Analysis of the Timed Up and Go Test

    No full text
The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test is used to assess mobility in older adults, but its reliance on completion time limits its insight into detailed movement patterns that could serve as early indicators of functional decline. This study aimed to identify lower limb and trunk kinematic biomarkers during the TUG test that distinguish between older adults with and without functional disability, emphasizing the potential for wearable sensor applications. Sixty adults aged 60+ participated in this cross-sectional study. Three-dimensional lower limb and trunk range of motion (ROM), velocity, center of mass (CoM) displacement, and velocity were analyzed using an optoelectronic system across TUG subphases: sit-to-walk, walk-forward, turn, walk-back, and turn-to-sit. Principal component analysis identified eleven principal components (PCs), explaining 84.33% of the total variance. PCs included sagittal hip and knee motion and CoM velocity during turn-to-sit and walking (PC1); tri-dimensional trunk velocity during turning, walk-back, and sit-to-walk transitions (PC2, PC4, PC6); sagittal knee and hip velocity in sit-to-walk (PC3); and frontal and transverse plane knee ROM and velocity during turning (PC5). Significant differences between functional disability groups were found for PC1 and PC4. These findings provide benchmark data for developing and validating wearable biosensors aimed at monitoring kinematic biomarkers

Individual participant data meta-analysis of eating behaviour traits as effect modifiers in acceptance and commitment therapy-based weight management interventions

    No full text
Obesity care may benefit from precision approaches, matching patients to treatment types based on their individual characteristics, including eating behaviour traits (EBTs) like emotional eating, uncontrolled eating, external eating, internal disinhibition and restraint. Initial evidence suggests that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based interventions might address dysregulated EBTs more effectively than standard behavioural treatments. However, it is unclear if ACT is more effective for certain EBT levels

Hybrid Work, Hybrid Identities: Identity Regulation among Gig Workers in Sub-Saharan Africa

    No full text
The expansion of the gig economy in sub-Saharan Africa is transforming local labour markets and how workers construct their identities. Despite the growing prevalence of digital labour platforms, little is known about how they regulate workers’ identities in non-Western contexts or how local cultural and societal factors mediate these processes. This article addresses these gaps by investigating identity regulation among gig workers in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. Employing a qualitative, multisite case study design, we draw on semi-structured interviews, digital ethnography, and document analysis to explore three core questions: How do gig platforms in sub-Saharan Africa regulate the identities of their workers? What local cultural and societal factors influence these processes? How do gig workers respond and negotiate identity regulation? Findings reveal that platforms shape worker identities through branding, algorithmic management, and customer feedback. However, these efforts are refracted through powerful local norms, family expectations, and informal worker networks. Gig workers employ strategies from adaptation and compliance to resistance and hybridization to navigate tensions between platform-imposed and locally valued identities. This study extends identity regulation frameworks to digital, non-Western contexts, highlighting hybrid work identities. Results offer insights for platform designers, worker organizations, and policymakers seeking more inclusive, context-sensitive digital labour
