The experience of luxury in historic hotels: The case of Palácio de Seteais
No full textThe main objective of this research is to evaluate the perception of luxury in historic hotels from the perspective of employees, identifying the key factors that contribute to a luxury experience for guests. The interaction between employees and guests and the experience that employees have regarding the demands and behaviours of guests in luxury hotels allows employees to have opinions and perspectives on the main factors influencing this market. Thus, this research was structured to understand the key factors within the perception of luxury and its relationship within the hotel industry through historic hotels. For this purpose, interviews were conducted with different members and former members of the Tivoli Palacio de Seteais Hotel. The results allowed us to conclude that luxury is currently based on the customer experience, for which its main factor is the service of the staff. The fact of being a historic hotel attracts an exclusive and select public that wishes to enjoy the essence that the walls and decoration of these hotels keep. These results show a relationship between the luxury experience and the concept of a historic hotel, and, therefore, it helps the hotel industry to define more objectively which markets to operate in and the most appropriate marketing strategies

Relação avós-netos, otimismo e Idadismo: Um estudo com jovens adultos
No full textNum contexto marcado pelo envelhecimento da população e pelo prolongamento das
relações intergeracionais, esta dissertação teve como objetivos: (1) analisar as diferenças
nas relações avós-netos, otimismo e idadismo em função do sexo biológico de jovens
adultos (18-30 anos); e (2) analisar um modelo teórico de relações entre a qualidade da
relação avós-netos, o otimismo e o idadismo. Partindo da hipótese de que uma relação
próxima com os avós potencia o desenvolvimento de uma visão mais otimista da vida e
contribui para atitudes menos idadistas, foram analisados os efeitos diretos e indiretos da
qualidade da relação avós-netos sobre o idadismo, tendo o otimismo como variável
mediadora.
A amostra foi constituída por 270 jovens adultos, e os dados foram recolhidos online. Os
resultados do primeiro objetivo indicaram diferenças significativas apenas ao nível do
idadismo, com os participantes do sexo masculino a apresentarem níveis mais elevados.
No que respeita ao segundo objetivo, verificou-se que a relação próxima com os avós está
positivamente associada a maiores níveis de otimismo, mas não se encontraram
associações significativas entre o otimismo e o idadismo, nem entre a relação avós-netos
e o idadismo, não se confirmando o papel mediador do otimismo.
Conclui-se que as relações intergeracionais afetuosas contribuem para o bem-estar
psicológico dos jovens adultos, ao promoverem uma visão mais esperançosa e positiva da
vida. Contudo, o seu impacto direto na desconstrução do idadismo permanece por
clarificar, sugerindo-se a necessidade de futuras investigações que aprofundem a
complexidade destas relações e o seu impacto na perceção do envelheciment

No full textO tráfico de mulheres para fins de exploração sexual constitui uma grave violação dos
direitos humanos, especialmente quando realizado por via marítima, dada a complexidade
do espaço oceânico e os desafios impostos pelas legislações internacionais. Esta
dissertação analisa o enquadramento jurídico internacional desse fenômeno, com ênfase
no Direito do Mar, a partir da ratificação do Protocolo de Palermo por Brasil e Portugal.
Trata-se de uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa, de base jurídico-comparada, que
combina análise normativa com estudo de casos emblemáticos e dados secundários
extraídos de fontes oficiais. O objetivo principal é avaliar em que medida os dispositivos da
Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre o Direito do Mar (CNUDM), notadamente os artigos
99.º e 100.º, oferecem respostas normativas eficazes ao enfrentamento do tráfico em rotas
marítimas. Propõe-se, com base no artigo 293.º da CNUDM, uma leitura integradora entre
o Direito do Mar e os direitos humanos, como caminho para suprir lacunas normativas e
operacionais. O principal contributo do trabalho reside na defesa de uma interpretação
crítica e ampliada do regime jurídico marítimo, que atenda às exigências contemporâneas
de proteção às vítimas e de combate ao crime organizado transnacional. A pesquisa
evidencia que, embora haja avanços normativos, a atuação estatal ainda se mostra
fragmentada, muitas vezes pautada por abordagens securitárias ou moralizantes, em
detrimento de respostas coordenadas e baseadas em direitos humanos. Conclui-se pela
necessidade de reforçar a cooperação internacional, aprimorar os mecanismos de
fiscalização marítima e desenvolver políticas públicas que reconheçam a complexidade
transnacional e de gênero do tráfico de mulheres
Time-series Forecasting of Electricity Prices for Industries in Portugal: A Real-world Internship-based Study
No full textThis work presents the development of a short-term electricity price forecasting solution using
machine learning, conducted during the author’s internship at Vanaci Prime, an IT consulting firm
specializing in data-driven solutions. The project was developed for the Portuguese market, in
collaboration with a client from the energy sector, and addresses the critical need for accurate,
real-time, and scalable electricity price forecasts to support strategic planning, cost optimization,
and operational decision-making.
The forecasting system is built upon a unified dataset combining information from three
authoritative sources: OMIE (day-ahead marginal electricity prices for the Iberian market), REN
Datahub (electricity load and renewable generation), and the Copernicus Climate Data Store
(meteorological variables including temperature, solar radiation, and precipitation). The combined
data underwent extensive time-series preprocessing and feature engineering, including lag features,
rolling statistics, calendar-based encodings, interaction terms, and normalized indicators reflecting
load trends and solar activity.
Multiple machine learning models were explored—namely LightGBM, XGBoost, and Extra
Trees—with LightGBM ultimately selected due to its superior performance and generalization
capability.
A complete machine learning pipeline in Python was developed to automate the transformation
of raw input data into model-ready features. To enhance the solution’s practical utility, a consumerfocused component was added to estimate potential monthly savings based on predicted electricity
prices.
The trained model and preprocessing pipeline are serialized and deployed using the FastAPI
web framework to serve real-time predictions via web endpoints.
Overall, the work demonstrates how artificial intelligence techniques can be used to automate
and optimize electricity price forecasting by integrating environmental, market, and load data,
while offering a replicable methodology for similar forecasting challenges in the energy sector
The impact of communication, gender, and risk aversion on family businesses’ sustainable practices: A game theoretical and experimental approach
No full textWe explore how communication, gender, and risk aversion influence decision-making in sustainability within family businesses. Using game theory, we model a sustainability decision-making-focused game, wherein we frame adopting sustainable practices considering the alignment between founder engagement and the successor’s proactive approach. We then use experimental economics to assess the robustness of the theoretical outcomes in real-world scenarios through simulated strategic interactions. Our main methodological contribution is bridging the gap between theory and empirical data under family business sustainability practices by combining game theory and experimental economics. Our findings show that communication increases the likelihood of sustainability decision-making, while gender and risk aversion have no statistically significant effect. However, when communication is factored in, gender becomes a significant factor, with females showing a greater likelihood of investing in sustainability
