Community Participation and Residents’ Attitudes towards Tourism Development in Rimoi National Reserve, Kenya

    No full text
Tourism development has become a focal point for many towns across the world, providing both cultural and economic interchange. However, the attitudes and involvement of locals play a major role in the success and longevity of such efforts. There has been little research on how community involvement affects locals' perceptions of tourist destination areas, particularly in the early phases of development, despite the crucial role that community participation plays in the development of sustainable tourism. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between locals' opinions regarding the growth of tourism in Kenya's Rimoi National Reserve and community participation. A convergent design and a mixed-methods approach were used in the investigation. Data was gathered from 10 resident teenagers who were purposefully chosen and 231 family heads who were chosen using a systematic sampling technique. While focus groups were used to produce qualitative data, questionnaires were employed to gather quantitative data. The results demonstrated a strong positive correlation between locals' sentiments toward tourism development and community participation (R=.666). Furthermore, the model indicated that approximately 44.4% of the variation in community participation could be directly accounted for by variations in the in residents' attitudes toward support for tourism development within the Rimoi National Reserve (R2=0.444). The study concludes that locals' perceptions of tourist development are significantly improved by community participation. Thus, active engagement of the community residents not only fosters positive attitudes but also holds the promise of yielding more sustainable and inclusive outcomes in tourism development initiatives within the community. The study recommends actively involving Rimoi National Reserve gateway community residents in tourism development discussions and decisions, raising awareness about the benefits of community participation, implementing capacity-building initiatives, and maintaining transparent communication channels. Catatonia: Current Perspectives on Pathophysiology, Clinical Features, and Therapeutic Strategies

    No full text
Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by a spectrum of motor and behavioral symptoms, including stupor, catalepsy, and agitation. This review examines the current understanding of catatonia, focusing on its clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and treatment options. Catatonia can manifest in various forms, including motor abnormalities, altered mental status, and mood disturbances. Symptoms often include immobility, echolalia, and posturing, which may severely impact daily functioning and quality of life. The pathophysiology of catatonia involves disruptions in neural circuits, particularly in the supplementary motor area and prefrontal cortex. Key neurotransmitter systems, including GABAergic and glutamatergic pathways, are implicated. NMDA receptor dysfunction and autoimmune mechanisms are also significant areas of research. Prompt diagnosis and intervention are critical for favorable outcomes. Short-term treatment often includes benzodiazepines and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which can lead to rapid symptom resolution. Long-term outcomes vary based on the underlying condition and the duration of untreated catatonia. Untreated catatonia can lead to severe complications, including permanent neurological damage and progression to malignant catatonia. Advances in understanding catatonia are ongoing. Future research should focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms, genetic and epigenetic factors, and novel therapeutic interventions. Longitudinal studies are needed to assess the durability and safety of current treatments and to explore new approaches such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation, and emerging pharmacological agents. Further epidemiological studies are also necessary to determine the prevalence of catatonia across different populations and settings, considering cultural, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. Keywords: Catatonia, neuropsychiatric syndrome, benzodiazepines, NMDA receptor antagonists, multidisciplinary approac

Primary data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire which was self-administered. Data obtained was processed and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings from the data analysis were visually represented through tables. The study revealed that demand forecasting system explained 7.6% of the change in performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya. The study concluded that demand forecasting system significantly influence performance of manufacturing firms in Kenya. This study recommends that manufacturing firms should use quantitative methods, qualitative methods, causal methods and time series for demand forecasting. The Relationship between Retained Earnings and Financial Performance of Listed Non-Financial Firms: An Econometrics Examination

    No full text
Internal funding sources such as retained earnings provide minimize information asymmetry in addition to being cheap and convenient for ailing firms such as listed non-financial firms trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). Research has however failed to do document precisely how the potential inherent in retained earnings can be exploited to improve financial performance of such firms in the long run. Therefore, this research conducted among 42 non-financial firms listed on the exchange explores the relationship between retained earnings and financial performance from an econometrics perspective. The study is anchored on the Pecking Order Theory, and employs the panel data research design founded in the positivist research paradigm, with data covering the time interval 2016 to 2022 inclusive.  Data is sourced purposively from the annual reports of the non-financial sector, including agricultural firms, automobiles and accessories, commercial & services, construction & allied, energy & petroleum, insurance, investment, investment services, manufacturing & allied, telecommunication, and real estate investment trust. The research uses the fixed effects model under panel regression to show a positive and significant relationship between retained earnings and financial performance, and particularly the ultimate direct influence that retained earnings have on financial performance of listed nonfinancial firms. Therefore nonfinancial sector stakeholders should seek to leverage retained earnings to enhance financial performance and achieve resilience in the volatile market conditions, while scholars should seek to enhance external validity of these findings by replicating them in other study contexts.
