The following document is one of the collection of miscellaneous 
papers belonging to Southwark Monthly Meeting. The style shews the 
paper to be almost certainly the work of George Fox himself and its 
matter bears a close resemblance in parts to Letter No. 258, dated 1668, 
in his printed Epistles. x The instructions were evidently intended to be 
used in the first building up of the system of discipline to which Fox 
was at that time devoting himself. His better known document on 
discipline, sometimes found in Monthly Meeting records, 2 though similar 
in purpose and much more detailed, does not contain the interesting pro­ 
posal for dealing with seafarers guilty of disorderly conduct beyond seas, 
with its formidable ad hoc committee of twenty-nine men and twenty-five 
women, drawn from various parts of London. The term " general 
meeting '' is used in both these documents, the distinction being not yet 
clearly drawn between the work of monthly and quarterly meetings. 
Unfortunately the only London minutes early enough to help, those of 
Horslydown M.M., do not throw any light on its working, though there is 
a brief reference, apparently to this matter, in x mo. 1668.

for ther is no serpent in Truth and admitts of no impurity 
and soe there is no serpent in y« way, to bite & hurt any for 
y6 way being the Truth & is y6 same as it was in ye beginning 
though many things hath risen ag* it yett it remaines the 
same the pure truth & ye holy way: soe if any have gon 
from it they are for condemnaCon and their workes
And when any thing is once condemned and judged, lett 
it not be raised up againe but keepe it in the grave, & raise 
not up the dead out of ye grave any more, they living in y« 
life & the light w^ doth condemne & judge it. & all to live 
in ye Love of God wch gives dominion over all & unites & 
ediffies all that abide in it.
2. If among f reinds any reports or surmises be about any or 
any backbiteings or whisperings all such things must be 
stopt & searched out for thus saith ye Lord thou shalt not 
raise a false Report among my People. And that some of 
the sober & faithfull freinds of every meeting whose sincerity 
is for the glory of God & his honour & his holy name into 
wch they are called may be chosen to search out such things 
& followe it till they find out ye Author of it, that it may not 
lye upon any nor in any, but that all may be cleered & taken

And all ym y* has gon from England & dishonered God

search out & know ye ground of ye matter y* all obstructions 
y* has hindred ye glory of God & ye spreading his truth yl 
all may bee taken away that the Lords name may not be 
dishonoured nor his way & truth evill spoken of & so all 
reports being searcht into in all the Plantations concerning 
freinds there that if any one hath donne any thing to 
dishonor truth beyonnd sea lett ym come to Judgment & 
Condemnation & give forth paprs of ye same, that the papers 
may be sent to ye world if ye world know it so yt their 
transgressions may be fetcht out of the mouthes & teeth

bring it to ye generall meeting, And if a man bee knowne 
to bee an open offender to ye world, That then their

3 John Pennyman in his Life, p. 56, states that Samuel Newton 
" cheated many of several hundred pounds and then fled beyond Sea/' 
and we know that in 1685 there was one of the name who had to be dealt 
with (Jnl. F.H.S., v) in Virginia. The editor of Fox's Journal omits the 
name (compare Camb. Jnl. ii. 167 with the bi-cent. ed. ii. 132), and the 
name was struck out in several places in the Haistwell Diary (Jnl. Supp. 
370). It appears to be a case of the biter bitten.
The need for discipline beyond seas appears in vol. v. pp. 97flf, 
vol. xi. 28ff.

" John and Sarah Grubb are, I expect, by this time either at or near 
their home. I heard the meeting was large. Sally, like a notable woman, 
went into the gallery after the ceremony, and was largely engaged to the 
people, many not Friends being present; she then took her seat beside 
John again, and was afterwards engaged in supplication. In a sitting 
at the house she was again exercised, I think more than once. Is not this 
' marrying as though she married not' ? "
Memoirs of Elizabeth Dudley, letter to Lucy Alexander, aft. Maw, 
21 ix. 1803, when twenty-four years old. Jonathan Grubb, of happy 
memory, was a child of J. and S. Grubb—there are interesting reminiscences 
of and comments on the religious labours of Jonathan Grubb, in F.Q.E. 
Ixii. 1928.
In Sherman's Memoir of William Alien, F.R.S., 1851, we read :
" I gave Jonathan Middleton and Thomas Smith (two of the young 
men at Plough-court) leave to go to the marriage of John Grubb and 
Sarah Lynes at Brentford. They were returning by Kew and Richmond, 
and at the latter place poor Jonathan was drowned" (p. 40).

Early this century, in a dark corner of a fireproof room at Devonshire 
House, London, was discovered a bundle marked " Early Manuscripts." 
From evidence then apparent but now lost, these manuscripts were 
worked over by Abram Rawlinson Barclay when he was preparing his 
Letters, etc., of Early Friends, published in 1841—hence the name—and 
were lost to sight and knowledge for more than half a century. They 
number two hundred and fifty and are dated from 1654 to 1688.
The extracts have been taken from a copy made by Charlotte Fell 
Smith in 1915-16 and have been checked with the originals, now bound 
in two volumes in D.
Notes are only supplied to Friends respecting whom no notes appear 
in the Cambridge edition of" The Journal of George Fox," or the Supplement 
to " The Journal."

Crake ye last first day y6 Freest haveing intellegence, raised 
ye towne with staves & clubs & resisted them. . . . one 
Capt Weddall had his horse stricken downe under him."

A facsimile of the letter appears in Elizabeth Hooton, by Emily 
Manners, 1914.
Weddell becomes Siddall in Letter xvii., the latter being probably 
the correct name, see Besse's Sufferings, Index under Yorkshire.

Castle, 19 Feb. 1652.
" Deare ffrend Captaine Stothards "—The writer rejoices 
that several of the military profession have become con­ 
vinced, and continues : " deare jfrend I doe not Looke at 
thee nor any as to put my Confidence in the Arme of flesh,

but my reioyceinge is in that Christ hath made himselfe 
manifest in flesh in you.
" I desire thee to send mee the discoverie of the false 
Temple and the true Temple, if it be printed w* the other 
of the Priests of the world. S amuell Buttivant did write to 
my brother Beniamin [Nicholson] that they would bee 
printed the 3: day of jifebruarie & I desire thee to send them 
imediately as thou Canst. Send me 200 of them or 300 as 
Samuell Buttivant doth declare would bee printed. Send 
mee word in thy Letter what thou didst pay for the Printeing 
of them & I shall use some meanes to send the money. Doe 
not fail me. Fellow prisoners salute you."
In 1653 appeared A Brief Discovery of a threefold Estate of Antichrist 
now extant in the World:—Viz., a Description of (i) The True and False 
Temple, etc. This was written by Thomas Aldam, Benjamin Nicholson, 
John Harwood and Thomas Lawson, and to it Buttivant wrote a preface 
" To the Reader."

THOMAS ALDAM AND ELIZABETH HOOTON TO 
GEORGE FOX. From Prison in York. ? 1654.
T.A.'s portion :
" There was two of Judge jfell daughters came to vs to 
prison & did stay wth us a prettie while wtt us They was verye 
solidd & loveinge; wee was moved to speake some words to 
them to w** there was noe gaine sayeinge." On a previous 
First-day Friends were present from " Balby, Selby & Mauton 
[? Mawton, that is Malton]." Some of his " Carnall frends " 
urged him to confess that he disturbed the peace of the 
people, a statement which would satisfy the magistrates and 
obtain his release, but he refused. " I did speake nothinge 
but the truth." He refers to his wife who is " kept mightie 
jTree to give mee up to my inward freedome."
E.H.'s portion :
Jane Vallance supplied their necessities. " Timothie 
Westobie Brunt wife was this 7th of July with us " and 
sends love. She cannot write much as " a rume is come into 
my eyes." " My husband seeks to have my outward libertie 
wch is my bondage."

THOMAS ALDAM TO CAPTAIN STODDARD. From 
York Castle, 21 June, 1653.
The arrival of Friends to hold a meeting at Krake, eight 
miles from York, was announced by the tolling of the church- 
bell ; priest and people " met jTriends at the townend with 
great clubbs." Captain Webb's horse was felled and his wife 
and himself thrown off. Captain Siddal (? Weddall, see 
Letter xiv] and his wife were among the injured. Friends 
withdrew and went elsewhere.
In York John Coale preached in the streets. The mob 
broke open the doors of Cornet Denham's house where Coale 
lodged and threatened " to poole his wife in peeces for 
harbouringe such A fellow there.'' Coale, who had come from 
London, was taken out of the house and ill-used.
" Here is A letter w* came from my deare Brother George 
jifox w** hee did desire mee to sent it to thee & to deliver it 
to the Generall & Heades of the people to Let them have 
copies of it. There was one other w** he sent Before. If 
thou had freedome to have got them printed together: & 
that of mine w^ came to thee to bee sent to General Cromb- 
well w* that of Richard jfamesworths to get them All 
printed in Booke; or gett these Two of Georges Printed 
together & let mee Receive some of them shortly." Love 
sent to John Hodgson, Richard Hatten and wife.

(1652).
James Nayler is with him. " James Naylers wife is come 
over to apelby with two Brethrene but the Jayler would not 
sufer them to come in the house but his wife is kind to us and 
tender and was made to fetch them in to the house and growes

in love & truth. We sent thee a Copy of the Examination 
& also of all the paseges of the prest as neare as we could."

The " Examination " was probably a copy of the document now 
preserved among Spence MSS. and printed in Camb. Jnl. i. 63. The priest 
was probably Dr. William Marshall, of Lancaster.

FRANCIS HOWGILL TO GEORGE FOX. " apelby I know 
nether day nor moneth."
" My dear Brother James is bould in our god and the 
Cause of his Impresonment is that he denied two words of 
god and witnesed Christ in him undevided I am acused for 
witnesing agayn all the prest of England that taught for 
hire . . . & for thouing a Justis of peace & for Keping 
my hat on. Col Benson came this day to Apelby & would 
have taken us away with an other Justis to be at liberty to 
the sesions but nether James nor I was fre till all the prests 
and country might be brought in."

" . . . Affter longe waitinge in greatt jfeare lest we

way that we Cam into him into his Chamber when ther 
wasse none but him sself & his 2 men. it was about six a 
Clocke at night we had most parte of an hower time with 
him wher we delivered thy Letter unto his own hand & he 
seemed to Receive it thanckfuly he is plaussable in his words 
& said thou wear a good womman he had hard much good 
of the but he is to wise in Comprehension & to highe in notion

Reading through the recent life of George Fox, written by Rufus M. 
Jones, we met the statement that Margaret Fell " became the mother of 
nine children, of whom seven daughters and one son were living at the 
time of Judge Fell's death in 1658."
Search among the several pedigrees of the family—British Friend, 
iii ; Barber, Furness and Cartmel Notes ; Crosfield, Margaret Fox ; etc., 
revealed no intimation of a family of more than eight children.
But the mother herself is the authority for the statement that there 
were nine children :
" We liv'd together twenty-six Years, in which time we had nine 
Children " (auto. Relation in Works, 1710, p. 2).
The succession of the seven daughters seems to have been established 
(Jnl. F.H.S. vi. 162). There are various spaces between the births of 
several of them which might have been occupied by a child that died young. 
The son George may have been the third or fourth in the family—born 
c. 1639.

The section on " The Seeker Movement" in Rufus M. Jones's 
Mysticism and Democracy in the English Commonwealth (Cambridge, 
Mass. : Harvard University Press, the William Belden Noble Lecture, 
1930-1931, pp. 184, $2.00), will appeal especially to Friends, for it was 
from the Seekers that George Fox drew many of his adherents. " It 
can, I think, be shown historically that the Seekers deserted the Church 
not because they had lost their religion and had become apostate in faith 
and life : the real trouble was that their expectation of what the spiritual 
stature of a Christian ought to be had travelled so far ahead of the actual 
spiritual stature which the Church was producing that they refused to 
recognize that Church as Christ's spiritual organ " (p. 711).
Twice-told tales from the pen of L. Violet Holdsworth are sure to 
have a further lease of life, as witness those collected into the volume 
The Romance of the Inward Light (London : J. M. Dent & Sons, pp. xiv. 
-f- 191, illustrated, js. 6d.). There are eight relations ranging from an 
article on " George Fox : Seeker for Reality " to the ghost story 
connected with John Crook. Hurry in production has been the cause of 
some mis-statements, a list of which appeared in The Friend of 
June loth.
Regarding " John Crook and the Haunted Room," a letter reached 
the Library from Robert W. Barclay, of Logmore, Dorking, dated 21 ix. 
1920, in which he wrote : " With regard to the story of the Ghost at Urie, 
I must say I had never before heard it, nor of the missing deeds, 1 and put 
it down as apocryphal. I learn from my uncle, the Rev. C. W. Barclay, 
that he had never heard of it before, and he is the best authority I know 
of on all family history."

Harry R. Hodgson, of Tranmere Park, Guiseley, Yorks., has con­ 
tributed to The Bradford Antiquary, vol. v. 1932, " Two Quaker Sketches," 
dealing with Scalehouse and Farfield, the former the Watkinson home 
where a noted gathering was held in 1658, and the latter connected 
with the Myers family. There are interesting views of each home.
The Pennsylvania Magazine for April, 1932 (vol. 56, no. 222), 
contains an article on " Some Colonial Ships built in Philadelphia," in 
which Friends appear—John Reynell (1708-1784), shipping merchant. 
Aaron Goforth, ship-builder, Elias Bland, of London, and Richard 
Deeble, of Plymouth, merchants.
Mr. T. Cann Hughes, M.A., F.S.A., of Lancaster, has contributed 
to The Manchester Quarterly, July-September, 1932, an article entitled 
" A Lancaster Literary Family," dealing with the Friendly family of 
Binns, and especially with Dr. Jonathan Bums (1747-1812), and his son of 
the same name (1785-1871). There are portraits of father and son and 
of Rachel Binns (1817-1895), daughter of the latter. The present 
representative of the family, George Jonathan Binns (1855- ), owner 
of many family records, lives at Dunstable.
Lady Robertson Nicoll, The Old Manse, Lumsden, Aberdeenshire, 
has written, " for private circulation," a history of her family, entitled 
Bells of Memory. The section " My Father " would be of principal 
interest to Friends. Her father, Joseph Pollard, was born of Quaker 
parents and resided at High Down, near Hitchin. He was a visitor at 
Earlham Hall. " When at school at Mr. Abbott's, Hitchin," he became 
acquainted with various Friends of the names of Brightwen, Lister and 
Foster, and William and Alfred Ransom were among his schoolfellows. 
Of Birket Foster it is not correct to state that he was " descended from 
Margaret Fell of Swarthmore Hall and George Fox." The volume, 
which we understand can be obtained from Wyllie, Union Street, 
Aberdeen, for 7/6, is very attractively illustrated. Copy presented 
by the author.
Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society of England, Vol. v. 
No. i. In the course of an article describing a portrait of Edward Irving 
(1792-1834), the founder of the " Catholic Apostolic Church," there is an 
account of Faithful Christopher Pack, the painter of the portrait, who 
was born of Quaker parents in Norwich in 1759 and died in the parish of 
St. Pancras in 1840. His association with Friends seems to have ceased 
when he went to London to study art. Later became an admirer and 
faithful follower of the great preacher, whose portrait he painted. A 
reproduction of it illustrates the article. He became a pupil of Sir Joshua 
Reynolds in 1781 and afterwards practised painting in Liverpool, Dublin 
and Norwich as well as London.

It is all to the good that incidents in the life-stories of Friends of 
various periods should be recorded and disseminated. The present-day 
addresses by Friends might well be illustrated by the relation of events 
in our long history. Hence we welcome Quaker Homespuns, 1655-1833, 
by Isabel Grubb, M.A. (London : Allenson, 7$ by 5, pp. 144, illustrations 
by Hilda Roberts, 33. 6d. net), a collection of twelve anecdotes of Irish 
Friends with historical background.
John Robson has presented a typed copy of an extract from the 
" Essex Review," April 1932, entitled Allotments in Essex a Century Ago. 
Two Friends, Wyatt George Gibson and Jabez Gibson, of Saffron Walden, 
were among landowners and others interested in this successful scheme.
The Spring Number of the Bulletin of Friends' Historical Association 
(Haverford, Pa.) contains articles recording the lives of Elihu Embree, 
the Quaker abolitionist (c. 1782-1820), and Ebenezer Hopkins of Haddon- 
field (1718-1757), and much other useful matter.

edition, a historical sketch of Lancaster's work, his indebtedness to his 
predecessor in educational work for the poor, Andrew Bell, and references 
to the support he received from Friends.
There is a valuable article on the " Moorman Family of Virginia " 
in the William and Mary College Quarterly, July 1932. " In 1670 
Zachariah Moorman, a Quaker, emigrated from the Isle of Wight to 
Nansemond County, Virginia."

After years of intensive research and study, Luella M. 
Wright, of the University of Iowa, has given to the student 
world a valuable contribution in her volume : The Literary 
Life of the Early Friends, 1650-1725 (New York : Columbia 
University Press,2 8J by 5$, pp. xiv-faoo,, including 32 
pages of Notes, 20 pages of Bibliography and 14 pages of 
Index), with Introduction by Rufus M. Jones. This is not 
a book to be announced, reviewed, shelved, and forgotten, 
but to remain at hand for the use of the Quaker investigator. 
Much regarding sermons, verse, essays, advices, confessions, 
proverbial literature/etc, appear. Chapter VI.—" Distribu­ 
tion of Literature "—seems specially informing, also the 
section on "Quaker Journals and Life." Subjects for special 
comment have been drawn from William Penn's Preface to 
" The Written Gospel Labours of John Whitehead," 1704 
(described by R. M. Jones as " a find "), and " The Journal 
of John Gratton," 1720, in addition to " The Journal of 
George Fox," 1694. Second Corinthians should, of course, 
be First Corinthians (p. 133).
A notable addition to regional history has just been issued, 
The First Fifty Years of Quakerism in Norwich, by Arthur J. 
Eddington, with Introduction by A. Neave Brayshaw 
(London : Friends Historical Society, Friends House, N.W.I; 
author: Woodside, Christ Church Road, Norwich, folio, 
pp. xi-f 299, sixty-five copies only, type-litho printed, price 
two guineas, a dozen or so only still remaining for sale). 
After a chapter, " In the Days of Oliver Cromwell," we have 
" The Restoration Period" (1658-1670), " Conflict and 
Suffering " (1670-1678), " The Norwich Case " (1680-1683), 
" The Final Persecution " (1683-1686), " The Close of the 
Century" (1686-1700). We can well believe the author's 
statement that he had been " many years working at this 
volume." Much original and official matter has been intro­ 
duced, the author's aim being " to allow the individuals to 
tell the story in their own words." There are numerous 
pages of Appendix and fourteen pages of Indexes—(i) 
Quakers, (2) Persons other than Quakers, (3) Places, and (4) 
Subjects.
