Get PDFWithin the production process of scientific communication material, several messages are transmitted implicitly, such as “what it is to do science” and how this activity takes place in a “neutral” way. However, when we analyze this process more deeply, we realize that scientific communication is much more than a “simplification” of scientific knowledge: it configures a new discourse, produced in a certain historical and cultural period by agents inserted in this context. That said, the aim of this article will be to understand the nature of science communication and connect it to the concept of ideology, using a historical materialist approach. From this perspective, we perceive the potential of such material, whether to support a hegemonic ideology, or to develop utopias from new perspectives and new ways of living.Dentro do processo de produção de um material de divulgação científica, diversas mensagens são transmitidas implicitamente, como “o que é fazer ciência” e como essa atividade se dá de maneira “neutra”. Contudo, ao analisarmos mais a fundo esse processo, percebemos que a divulgação científica é muito mais do que uma “simplificação” dos conhecimentos científicos: ela se configura em um novo discurso, produzido em um determinado período histórico e cultural por agentes inseridos nesse contexto. Dito isso, o objetivo do presente artigo será compreender a natureza da divulgação científica e conectá-la ao conceito de ideologia, utilizando uma abordagem materialista histórica. A partir dessa ótica percebemos as potencialidades de tal material, seja para sustentar uma ideologia hegemônica, seja para desenvolver utopias a partir de novos olhares e novos jeitos de se viver
O Universo escuro para as mulheres: Gênero e Ciência na trajetória de Vera Rubin na Astronomia
Get PDFThe recurring absence of women scientists in the “naiver” narratives of the History of Science reinforces a widely held view that intellectual production is the result of the efforts of primarily male scientists. To circumvent this scenario, Gender and Science studies suggest approaching historical narratives that focus on the contributions and trajectories of women scientists. In science education, recognizing the identities of those characters who have played leading roles in the construction of science enables teachers and students understand the contribution of a diversity of people in the scientific enterprise. In this sense, this article seeks to expose aspects of gender relations manifested in the academic career of the American astronomer Vera Rubin, recognized for her studies on galaxies that provided evidence for the existence of dark matter in the Universe. The biographical research is based on primary literature, such as autobiographical essays and interviews, as well as secondary literature, including biographies about the scientist. The main reference for discussions on Gender and Science is the studies of historian Londa Schiebinger. Based on a critical analysis of women’s structural difficulties in maintaining their position in the academic and scientific world, paths are outlined for reversing this scenario.A recorrente ausência das mulheres cientistas nas narrativas mais “ingênuas” da História da Ciência acaba reforçando uma visão amplamente difundida de que a produção intelectual é resultado dos esforços majoritariamente de cientistas homens. Para contornar esse cenário, os estudos de Gênero e Ciência indicam a abordagem de narrativas históricas que tenham como foco as contribuições e trajetórias de mulheres cientistas. No contexto da educação em ciências, o reconhecimento das identidades dessas personagens que protagonizaram a construção da ciência ao longo do tempo possibilita que professores e alunos compreendam o papel da diversidade de pessoas no empreendimento científico. Nesse sentido, este artigo busca expor aspectos das relações de gênero que se manifestam na trajetória acadêmica da astrônoma estadunidense Vera Rubin, reconhecida por seus estudos sobre galáxias que forneceram evidências para a existência da matéria escura no Universo. A pesquisa biográfica é fundamentada em literatura primária, constituída por ensaios autobiográficos e entrevistas, e em literatura secundária, por biografias sobre a cientista. A principal referência para o direcionamento das discussões sobre Gênero e Ciência consiste em estudos da historiadora Londa Schiebinger. A partir da análise crítica das dificuldades estruturais que as mulheres enfrentam para se manterem no meio acadêmico e científico, são elencados caminhos para a reversão desse cenário

We also show that proving their mutual compatibility by means of logic leaves untouched the moral problem tied to their material truth. Finally, we trace the problem back to the failure to signal in the spelling of the slurring term’s meaning that the derogatory concept it denotes is not universally accepted

But modes (τρόπος) are general argument forms that can be deployed individually against the dogmatist, who is willing to accept that a certain answer to a question establishes how things really are. In this case, the aim of the modes is not the general suspension of judgment but the continuation of the investigation. I present a deductive version of the mode of undecidable dissension that pinpoints some principles and assumptions the skeptics requires to run their arguments

Some argue that this sentence cannot be translated into predicate logic. This may be seen as flaw in predicate logic. Against this, I argue in this paper that the problem is not predicate logic, but rather our commitments with the existence and nature of certain things. By revising some of these commitments, we can see that predicate logic is perfectly capable to deal with the problematic sentences
