Affirmative Action in the Educational Sector: A Discriminative Practice or for Promoting Peaceful Living?
Get PDFThe article discusses the admission process for Unity schools in Nigeria, which uses affirmative action to ensure the representation of students from all regions of the country. The policy promotes fairness, equity, and justice in education by compensating disadvantaged groups without equal access to opportunities, rights, and ‘social bases of self-respect’. Affirmative action removes obstacles that prevent individuals from pursuing their goals and ensures that all parts of the country are represented. They might not be the most intelligent students, but they are the best in their region. The evidence shows that affirmative action is not discriminatory but relatively justifiable as a temporary measure to reduce the educational imbalance between the northern and southern parts of the country. With limited school spaces and numerous applicants, the admission policy prioritizes diversity, equity, and unity. Without this policy, the schools would be dominated by students from the south of Nigeria, which could lead to conflict and a lack of positive peace. Educational achievement discrepancies, such as disparities in access to quality education, resources, and opportunities, have the potential to breed distrust and conflict within communities
Using Student-Generated Artwork as a Form of Social Studies Assessment
Get PDFMaking visual artwork like paintings, photographs, and prints can act as a valuable assessment tool in the social studies classroom. Secondary social studies educators can implement art creation to assess students throughout the learning process, in both formative and summative assessments. Art creation has unique benefits, and it can be a supplement or replacement to traditional written assessments. It offers opportunities for differentiated instruction, where students interact with the material in different ways. Art also gives an outlet for students to make new connections without the use of text. Educators can also design and implement art-based assessment as an authentic form of assessment in a visual world. Social studies teachers should implement art as an assessment tool at the secondary level
Pluriversal and Relational Pedagogies for Peace(s)
Get PDFThe aim of this paper is to recognize and re-envision strategies for peace education that encourage pluriversal and relational ways of knowing and being, and support the creation of a collective imagination of interdependence. One presumption is, that to realize cultures of peace it is crucial to transform the violences of modernity that encompasses a particular ontology and our mode of being in the world. The paradigm of modernity has universalized experience, grounding it in unitary ontologies and imperialist epistemologies that hinder certain systems of knowing and being. These epistemologies have heavily colonized our thinking and feeling, and consequently our educational systems. Embodied and holistic forms of learning and knowledge are marginalized in our current educational institutions. The paradigm of modernity traps us within a certain way of thinking about the world. How can peace education work with the unitary mode of thinking and the violences of modernity? I will try to frame a teaching and learning approach that enhances learners’ ability to think, feel and act critically, interdependently, and pluriversally, allowing for the coexistence of different worlds and realities. Pluriversality, the Zapatistas’ decolonial political vision, refers to a world in which many worlds coexist and various systems of knowing and being are given equal acknowledgement. The pluriverse tries to go beyond the dualistic, separatist ontology that focuses on human/nonhumans, mind/body, global south/global north, and developed/underdeveloped. The pluriverse calls for an ontoepistemological turn towards radical relationality and interdependence and this is especial crucial for peace (education)
Supporting Local Actors in Times of Conflict: The Civil Peace Service and Its Various Actors
Get PDFIn the last years, the number of articles that have been calling for a stronger influence of local actors in conflict transformation and peacebuilding has been steadily increasing. At the practical level of peace-work, we can already find some examples where the local actors play an important role in the peace processes. This cooperative work can be found for example in the German Civil Peace Service (CPS) that is working in (post-) conflict countries with the aim of involving and working together with local actors in local peace processes. This article reflects on this cooperation and looks into the following questions: How can partnership in peacebuilding look like? What role do power-asymmetries play in the work of the CPS? And what do people working in the area of CPS need and what do they do? To answer these questions, the article uses the unique method of storytelling in order to combine voices from CPS-actors as well as researchers in order to discuss different perspectives and answers to this question. The article will introduce the CPS, its history, and forms of cooperation, will speak about chances and limitations for both local actors as well as German peace workers during the cooperation but also in their training and accompaniment and will close with recommendations for peace work that aims to cooperate with local actors
“Clozapine & Valbenazine for Treatment of Tardive Cervical Dystonia: A Case Report”: Tardive Cervical Dystonia
No full textCervical dystonia is a subtype of tardive dyskinesia characterized by smooth, sustained muscle contractions affecting the head, neck, and shoulders. This condition can be caused by antipsychotic medication exposure. It has a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life and represents a treatment challenge for providers. We present the case of a 26-year-old male with a history of schizophrenia treated with antipsychotic medications who presented with on and off smooth twisting movements of his neck and hand tremors. He was initially treated with benztropine and a decrease in the dose of his antipsychotic medications. However, when his symptoms continued to worsen, he was cross tapered to clozapine and valbenazine. Valbenazine is a VMAT2 inhibitor FDA approved for treatment of tardive dyskinesia, but there is little data regarding its use for tardive dystonia. The cervical dystonia impact profile-58 (CDIP-58) was administered to monitor the patient’s symptoms. Overall, there was a reduction in cervical dystonia symptoms within a 10-week period. This case illustrates the potential for clozapine plus valbenazine to treat tardive cervical dystonia
