Protecting Students? Rhetoric vs. Reality and Recommendations for Peace Educators in the United States
Get PDFRepublican legislators have for years said they are enacting measures to protect kids in schools. Laws have been passed around the country to limit the types of books young people have access to in schools, the curricula that they are taught, who can access school-based sporting opportunities, and even where students can use restrooms. Although attacks on educators and the public school system are not new, these recent moves are allegedly necessary to counter the supposed “wokeness” of public schools and universities today.
In reality, much of the Republican party is actively opposing measures that actually protect kids. For example, many Republican politicians have opposed universal school lunch, an important measure to help feed poor kids. Republican leaders’ support for expanding Medicaid expansions to over poor children is weak, at best. Most Republican politicians actively oppose measures to restrict guns, even those specifically designed to keep guns out of the hands of children. This is despite polls that show a majority of Republic voters join Democrat voters in supporting sensible gun control.
This paper begins with a discussion of several of the supposed “protection” measures Republican politicians have pushed in recent years. It then discusses efforts that might actually protect students but that Republican politicians have opposed. The paper concludes with implications and recommendations for peace educators

Get PDFThis essay considers the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius as a kind of philosophical performance manual. It argues that an appraisal of this text in terms of performance is one key way in which to understand the originality of the Meditations. Throughout much of the Meditations, Marcus surveys his own experience and the things occurring around him and attempts to create a kind of mental space (an “inner citadel”) from which to “correctly” perceive these experiences and events. But it is also clear that this “inner citadel” is a space that can only exist inasmuch as it is enacted, moment by moment. This essay follow’s Pierre Hadot’s claim that the Meditations offer a window into a set of “spiritual exercises” which would later be developed within a Christian context by Ignatius of Loyola. However, this essay argues that the Meditations differs considerably from the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises conceived thirteen centuries later, which envisions an ongoing dialogical relationship with a personal God rather than an inner dialogue set against the impersonal governance of Nature. It is this performative construction of the self, set in adversarial relation to the self-experiences of that self, that separates the Stoic spiritual experience from the Christian tradition that would eventually supplant it. In a contemporary secular context, however, it is very much this performative approach to aligning one’s identity with an all-encompassing world view, without encumbrance from organised religious structures, which ensures the continuing currency of the Meditations today

Integrating Reform Math Instruction in the Special Education Classroom: Reform Math and Special Education
No full textOver the past twenty years, the goals of mathematics education have evolved. While procedural knowledge remains important, there is now a greater emphasis on reasoning, problem-solving, and discourse. The direct instruction approach, commonly used for students with learning disabilities, has not kept pace with these new expectations and does not adequately develop the conceptual knowledge and reasoning skills emphasized by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. By combining the reform-math approach, which is preferred in general education, with direct instruction, students with learning disabilities can achieve deeper understanding and improved generalization of their math skills, leading to holistic development. This paper will provide information on improved learning outcomes for students with learning disabilities when these two approaches are integrated.
