No full textStarting from the analysis of the global ecological crisis and from the concept of interbeing, the practice of compassion and the approach of eco-pedagogy , this article explores psycho-educational perspectives for an ecological contemplative pedagogy that articulates critical , experiential and transformative practices . Through the analysis of experiences from the Círculo de estudios para la paz and IIPE 2024, the epistemological, political and affective challenges of the emerging eco -relational paradigm of peace are discussed . The work concludes by highlighting the need to integrate ancestral knowledge, contemplative practices, and an emotional reconnection with the earth to consolidate an education committed to ecological justice and planetary regeneration .Partiendo del análisis de la crisis ecológica global y del concepto de interser, la práctica de la compasión y el enfoque de la eco-pedagogía , este artículo explora perspectivas psico-educativas para una pedagogía ecológica contemplativa que articule prácticas críticas , experienciales y transformadoras . A través del análisis de experiencias del Círculo de estudios para la paz y del IIPE 2024, se discuten los desafíos epistemológicos, políticos y afectivos del emergente paradigma eco-relacional de la paz. I draw on motivation and belongingness theories to emphasize the significance of positive peer interactions and strong student-teacher relationships in cultivating a supportive learning space. Furthermore, I explore how community engagement initiatives can help tackle broader social issues that affect student motivation and engagement. By focusing on these elements, English teachers can establish a classroom atmosphere that motivates every student to excel.
Shared and unique transcriptional changes in the orbitofrontal cortex in psychiatric disorders and suicide
Get PDFPsychiatric disorders like major depressive disorder (MDD), schizophrenia (SCZ), and bipolar disorder (BPD), represent a significant global public health concern. Sex differences in the prevalence and presentation of psychiatric disorders, and the association of a psychiatric diagnosis with increased risk of suicide, are well-established. However, the neurobiology underlying these features of disease are not well understood. Dysfunction of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), a brain region responsible for decision-making and sensory processing, has been implicated in psychiatric disorders but remains understudied compared to other frontocortical brain regions.
In this study we investigated sexual dimorphism in psychiatric illnesses and suicide by analyzing publicly available OFC transcriptional profiles (RNAseq data obtained from the Stanley Neuropathology Consortium) from individuals with SCZ, BPD, MDD, and non-psychiatric controls (n=15/group).
Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) revealed significant differences in immune-related processes in male and female comparisons and in psychiatric disorders relative to controls. Analysis of top differentially expressed genes found changes in P2RY12 in males and females who died by suicide. Additionally, downregulation of protein folding processes was observed in female suicide subjects, suggesting an association between dysregulated protein metabolism and suicide. Our results further our understanding of the shared and unique molecular pathways underlying psychiatric disorders and suicide.
