Adding word sense awareness to computer-assisted language learning methods: a tailor-made word sense disambiguation method for Spanish as a foreign language
Word sense awareness is a feature which has not yet been implemented in most Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) environments or in computer-readable resources for pedagogical purposes such as graded word lists. The current study aims to contribute to filling this gap by presenting a word sense disambiguation (WSD) method1 which relies on a tailor-made sense inventory, exploits readily available large language models, and only requires a limited number of prototypical examples sentences as manually curated data. The methodology is evaluated on a set of 74 lexically ambiguous items, with a Spanish language for specific purposes course as the target setting. With weighted F1 scores up to 0.8995, the WSD method shows potential to be applied in real-life CALL scenarios
The present study seeks to demonstrate that textual comprehension is linked to the unraveling of rhetorical relationships and that the complexity of the hierarchy derived from rhetorical relationships is determined by the development of working memory (WM). Furthermore, the idea is defended that the more rhetorical relationships the subject can establish, the greater its capacity to determine the referent of a pronominal element. To demonstrate this thesis, we started with a child population (fourth and sixth grade children); These were evaluated on the different components of the WM, their capacity for anaphoric resolution and the rhetorical complexity of their texts. The results show that short-term working memory and long-term working memory proposed by Ericsson and Kintsch (1995) are predictors of the memory of the two main types of rhetorical relationships (coordinated and subordinate), although in an asymmetric way. Likewise, it was shown that, indeed, the subjects who established more rhetorical relationships (coordinated or subordinate) were those who established the antecedent of the rhetorical element with a greater degree of accuracy.
The most gender-equal Olympics? A corpus-assisted keywords analysis of Italian press coverage of male and female athletes in Paris 2024
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games were the most gender-equal in athlete participation. This article analyzes Italian media coverage to assess the representation of male and female athletes, focusing on narrative equality and gender biases. Using a corpus of Italian daily journal articles, we conducted a Corpus-Assisted Discourse Analysis. Results show that women’s sports received less coverage than men’s, are more likely to be represented in traditionally “feminine” sports like gymnastics, while in other sports they were underrepresented. The media emphasized gender and regulatory issues, especially concerning transgender athletes. Additionally, female athletes were often depicted through emotional lenses, while male athletes were framed through competitiveness and achievement. Despite growing participation equality, media portrayals of athletes remain influenced by traditional gendered narratives, indicating a need for further examination as sports media evolves.
Abstracts of the 49th Symposium on Cuniculture, ASESCU
The 49th Symposium of the Spanish Association of Cuniculture (ASESCU) was held last May in Burgos (Castilla y León; Spain). The event was organised in collaboration with Union de Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos (UPA). During the congress, two main lectures were presented. First, Luis Ángel Quintela, from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, explained how animals use pheromones to communicate and explored their potential to reduce stress and improve animal breeding in farming. Then, Francisco Xavier Mora, from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, talked about re-emerging diseases found in recent years in rabbit farming. The challenges to face with the possible incoming legislation on rabbit housing were discussed by producers, researchers, rabbit meat distributors, housing manufacturers and livestock associations in a round table. Moreover, four simultaneous and interactive round tables were held during a coffee break, with dynamic discussions on processed rabbit meat products, the new legislation about rabbit health, good farming practices and the use of additives in rabbit nutrition. More than a hundred people joined the congress, including technicians, farmers and researchers. In the following pages you can see the contributions on genetics and reproduction, nutrition, housing and welfare, environmental control and pathology
Mostrando el proceso. El ejemplo de La casa Lobo
Throughout their filmography, and in particular in their first feature film entitled La casa lobo (2018), Cristobal León and Joaquín Cociña have created a type of images that are characterized first and foremost by preserving traces of the process of their production. This article sets out to examine the links that this stylistic option maintains with certain ontological problems, using approaches drawn both from the work of Gilles Deleuze and from a certain number of statements made by these two Chilean directors in various interviews. In the development of this research it has been crucial to determine the fundamental dangers to which animated cinema exposes itself when, in order to address such problems, it confers on its images an organic, accidental and precarious character, as well as the analysis of the specific strategies by which León and Cociña have tried to avoid such dangers.
The architectural guidebook, as the publishing format in its current form, was born in interwar Germany with Neues Bauen in Berlin (Heinz Johannes, 1931); the second work of this kind, New sights of London (Hugh Casson, 1938) came a few years later. Both of them included among their graphic material drawings made by the authors of the publications to illustrate some of the works in their catalogues. For the Berlin guide, these were freehand street views, while for its London successor a series of architectural elevations were produced. This article analyses the characteristics of these illustrations, their place in their authors' careers and their brief role in the early development of the architectural guidebook as an emerging publishing type.
Between the beginning of the 17th century, when the carpentry manuscripts dealing with western muqarnas (muqarbas) were written, and the present day, several concepts have been popularized while remaining sometimes attributed to the original authors, being these later interpretations. The iteration of this process, not only on the original texts but on the hypotheses of secondary authors, ends up establishing beliefs about muqarbas that find no theoretical foundation in the original works and sometimes do not correspond to the constructed reality. This article reviews this process, exposing the specific cases of the terms “chaplón” and “jaira”, as well as the use of a single profile of the muqarbas template. Tracing the key authors of these deviations reveals how these basic concepts have influenced the current understanding of western muqarnas, leading to inconsistencies regarding their hypothetical craftmanship and construction.

On n-ellipse contractive mappings over some extended metric spaces
In this paper, the concept of a mapping contracting axes of an n-ellipse is introduced and its fixed point set has been determined. Investigation of fixed point of mappings over different metric-type spaces is always an interesting study in fixed point theory. We consider a mapping with special characteristic, which is contracting axes of an n-ellipse over two different metric-type structures, Δ -metric space and ℱ -metric space. An enriched version of a mapping contracting axes of an n-ellipse is also introduced, and this class of mappings includes several non-expansive mappings. Moreover, the paper is furnished by some suitable examples that support our results and show that our mapping is distinct from the usual contractive type mappings
Remarks on Suzuki-type fixed point results in relational metric spaces
In this paper, we point out mathematical errors and flaws in the proofs of certain recent results obtained by some authors in relational metric spaces. We also provide corrected versions of these proofs, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of the corresponding results
This paper presents a workshop-type session aimed at undergraduate students, whose objective is to introduce the fundamentals of synthetic data simulation through a practical application in animal science. Using as an example the behavior of goats recorded by triaxial accelerometry sensors, two key mathematical simulation methods are explained: the Monte Carlo method, applied to both discrete non-parametric distributions —to simulate the sequence of activities— and continuous parametric distributions —to model their duration—, and the VAR models —to generate realistic acceleration signals—. The proposal provides insight into how simulation can make up for the paucity of real data and support the development of predictive models.
