    Get PDF
This study focuses on the comparison of different hydrological programs in a semiarid basin with the aim of providing an evaluation of their performance in the simulation of hydrological processes. For this purpose, two distributed or two-dimensional programs have been evaluated (Iber and HEC-RAS), and a semi-distributed program (HEC-HMS), considering three rainfall events recorded in the rain gauge network of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura and a synthetic event with a return period of 100 years. In addition, the behaviour of the models has been evaluated by exposing the digital terrain model to changes to better model it to the reality. The results show that, in general, the Iber model shows greater similarity of the simulated flows with respect to the gauged flows, and that the obstructions present in the basins analysed, on a large scale, do not have a significant influence on the results.

Agriculture is considered the main source of diffuse pollution, being nitrogen and sediments its main environmental impacts. Therefore, an improvement of the current management practices of these areas is crucial. In that sense, this study is focused on the southernmost catchments of the Mar Menor, an area which is under threat due to diffuse export of nitrogen and sediments. Hence, this study evaluates the effectiveness of several best management practices based on Law 3/2020, de recuperación y protección del Mar Menor para el control de las descargas de nitrógeno y sedimentos a la laguna. Results showed that being totally compliant with Law 3/2020 significantly reduce the production of sediments to the lagoon, as well as the surface nitrogen export and nitrate leaching.

The intervention in the section of Oviedo city wall on calle Paraíso has led to its recovery and valorization, raising the profile of this Asset of Cultural Interest, which is key to understanding the formation and evolution of the city itself and was declared a historic-artistic monument by Decree on 3 June 1931. This walled city was chosen by Alfonso II in the 9th century as the seat for the court of the Asturian monarchy, as well as the departure point for the first pilgrimage to Compostela to see the newly discovered sepulchre of the Apostle Santiago. Alfonso X ordered the wall to be built at the height of the Reconquest. This article analyses the legal and heritage situation prior to intervention and contractual needs, as well as the progression of the construction of the wall, technical treatments, and project decision-making by the multidisciplinary team led by the architect José Ramón Fernández Molina.

    Get PDF
This work aims to illustrate difficulties in conservation and intervention with regard to Carlo Scarpa’s exposed reinforced concrete, which is characterised by unique formal features. The case study of the Brion Tomb (1969-78), designed by Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978), is exceptional for its monumental character, along with its designer’s desire to envisage its ageing, but not its deterioration, over time. In this sense, the almost exclusive use of reinforced concrete for the building and the choice of certain experimental technical solutions place this architectural complex within the general context of problems related to the restoration of contemporary architecture, due to the theoretical and operational difficulties in defining interventions for its conservation. The restoration of this complex, which was completed in 2020, was an extraordinary opportunity to reflect on the methods and limits of conservation work, and to update technical capabilities to the current state of the art.

Social Justice Education as an Intercultural Experience for Foreign Students in the United States

    Get PDF
Many language learners struggle with unequal access and lack of opportunities for active participation in meaningful discussions in and outside of the classroom. In this study, 15 international college students engaged in critical media literacy discussion over a myriad of social justice topics through the lens of intercultural understanding and acceptance. Participants analyzed the content and recorded video reflection on an online video discussion platform, Flipgrid as they answer the five critical media literacy questions. These critical questions foster discussions of intercultural interpretation online and in class discussions as students expressed their perceptions of social justice issues. This project drew on the theory of intercultural communicative competence (Byram, 1997) integrating social justice into language curriculum in two ways: by exposing students to important issues, and by helping students claim their voice in the discussion. Results of students’ video reflections and face-to-face discussions show the trajectory and growth of students’ progress in intercultural awareness. The findings offer guidelines for language educators to incorporate issues of social justice by using engaging platforms and media literacy practices

Boosting Vocabulary through the WordUp App

Vocabulary is an essential component in language learning. In addition to its relationship with other language skills, such as pronunciation (form), reading (meaning), and grammar (use), vocabulary is required for language proficiency. In parallel, language learners must be equipped with specific amounts of vocabulary to comprehend texts of diverse genres (e.g., novels, newspapers, and movies). However, learning vocabulary is incremental, and this skill challenges many language learners in their language-learning journeys for several reasons. Nevertheless, emerging mobile technologies might mitigate the negative impacts on language learning (e.g., lack of motivation and engaging learning environment). In this regard, the present study evaluates a mobile app called WordUp using Kohnke and Moorhouse's (2022) framework

Bilingual Viewer: A bilingual text generation tool

    Get PDF
This article describes the website BilingualViewer.com; it discusses the technologies used to build it and the engineering challenges that were encountered. BilingualViewer.Com is an open and free application that uses web technologies to create Bilingual versions of articles and books. The website can be saved onto the homepage of a smartphone and used like an App (for reading and converting newspaper articles on the fly), in addition to being opened on a computer's browser to process intensive tasks such as whole book translations. The website will henceforth be referred to as the app. Bilingual text refers here to a piece of writing where sentences in two different languages are presented sequentially, one sentence in the language to be learned followed by the user's primary language. Bilingual texts are particularly useful for students who rely heavily on dictionaries when reading books and newspaper articles. The app helps to create bilingual texts from almost any electronic content. A key feature from a copyright point of view is that the content is generated and stored locally on the device (unless added to an online library). Where a subscription is required to access newspaper content, the app generates a bilingual text article and stores it locally, so that the restricted content does not leave the device (i.e., it does not appear in any cloud server other than Google or Apple translation servers). There is a large features list including switching on and off languages, getting the device to read out loud, saving a list of items on the device along with the currently read position, sending content to an eBook, merging articles and more. A library of pre-translated books is provided in the app with the option of augmenting this with the user’s own on-line content. The app is available at https://www.bilingualviewer.com/ Documentation on the app can be found at hhtps://bv-fc.netlify.app/about

The article analyses, through drawing, projects and, in the realised cases, photographs that reflect how transparency and dematerialisation from expressionism and Glassarchitektur evolves with Mies van der Rohe and the heir architecture of transparency in SANAA with the aim of generating effects that transform the viewer’s perception, a trend that leads to media architectures such as Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R). The tour demonstrates how a graphic and visual narrative develops that combines utopia and reality.

Construir dibujos, construir ciudades

After writing the draft of La Construction des villes in 1910, this project was put on hold until 1915, when he moved to Paris for seven weeks. At the Bibliothéque Nationale he prepared a series of files with texts and sketches and, above all, devoted himself to copying new drawings. Now the workmanship is fast, and rather than faithfully reproducing, he interprets what he sees through a new prism: classicism. There are other references: Blondel and Laugier as sources of authority, but also books and plates by Piranesi, Perelle, Riat, Patte, oriental architecture, historical maps of Paris and prints and engravings from the Cabinet des Estampes. That book was definitively abandoned, but a new conception of the city began to take shape in those days and was reflected in his urban proposals and in Urbanisme, where he published some of these drawings.
