Exploring the Role of GenAI Tools on Student Motivation and Communicative Competence in the Spanish Classroom

This study explores the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in an advanced Spanish language course, with a focus on learner motivation and communicative competence. Although GenAI tools, such as chatbots and adaptive feedback systems, have been increasingly implemented in higher education, their application in Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) classroom remains under-researched. The research involved 41 students from two sections of an advanced Spanish course at a Canadian university, one for foreign language learners and one for heritage speakers. Participants completed a pre-task questionnaire, engaged in a GenAI supported collaborative task, and reflected on their experiences through a post-task survey. The primary task involved using ChatGPT to gather cultural information about a Spanish-speaking country and create a promotional campaign. Data were collected using both quantitative (Likert-scale surveys) and qualitative (open-ended reflections) methods. Findings indicate that most students felt comfortable and motivated when using GenAI tools and perceived them as useful for accessing real-time feedback and supporting personalized learning. The task was described as engaging and well-organized, although some students found it too simple to fully challenge their language abilities. Participants also identified limitations, including concerns about content accuracy, overreliance, and the lack of cultural and emotional nuance in GenAI outputs. The study underscores the importance of task design, GenAI literacy, and the instructor’s role when implementing GenAI tools in language instruction. It advocates for a hybrid approach that combines human expertise with GenAI capabilities to foster motivation, learner autonomy, and communicative competence, addressing an underexplored gap in the literature

GenAI Models as Keyword Rankers: A Learner-centred Case Study for L2 Spanish

Frequency-based word lists form an important part of general-purpose vocabulary learning courses aimed at beginner and (lower-)intermediate learners of a foreign/second language (L2). For advanced learners and/or specific purposes, however, relying exclusively on these general word lists will be unlikely to lead to an adequate selection of vocabulary. As research in this latter area remains scarce (especially for languages other than English), the present study aims to fill (part of) the gap by investigating the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) models to automatically rank vocabulary items based on how typical they are of a given topic, focusing on Spanish as the target language. I compile a dataset containing four domain-specific subsets of 200 vocabulary items (for the topics economics, health, law, and migration) and analyse how well GenAI-based rankings of these vocabulary items (using zero-shot prompting) correlate with gold standard human rankings (provided by L2 learners). As the evaluation baseline, I use the rankings obtained by means of the Kullback-Leibler divergence (i.e., a statistical keyness measure based on word frequencies). With a top average Spearman’s ρ and Kendall’s weighted τ of 0.73, this first-of-its-kind study demonstrates that the tested GenAI models (Gemma, Llama, and Mistral) outperform the baseline by a large margin, showing great potential for use in the real-life creation of domain-specific vocabulary lists for L2 learning purposes

Interacting with AI in Creative Translation Teaching: Exploring Subjectivity and Developing Style

This article presents two experiments with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the context of creative translation, an English Studies course subject at Aix-Marseille University in France. The use of creative writing and translating exercises (culturally relocated texts, plurilingual writing, self-translation…), aims to enhance students’ subjective appropriation of their second language and to help them develop their own style. The first experiment uses multilingual text embeddings for self-assessment of a translated text. The second uses generative AI, which produces text. Since we are interested in subjective appropriation of a second language, the article reflects on the kind of language AI uses, with reference to psycholinguistic theory. While generative AI produces rapid outcomes, creative translation teaching focuses on process—what if AI were harnessed as part of the process? The article suggests ways of building on current creative practice in translation teaching as we face the challenges of AI

Innovative facade solutions for energy efficiency in contemporary architecture: inspired by traditional elements

The reinterpretation of traditional passive design strategies is of importance to modern architectural sustainability. One such effective strategy, widely used in traditional architecture to achieve indoor thermal comfort, is mashrabiya. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of adapting mashrabiya to modern architecture on energy-efficient facade design. The city of Diyarbakır, located in the hot and dry climate zone of Turkey, was selected as the study area. The mashrabiya is integrated into the living room. In this context, the effect of the use of perforated dimensions, depth and components of the mashrabiya on the indoor cooling load on four different facades was analysed. As a result of 148 different analyses, the use of mashrabiya on the south, east and west facades was found to be an important strategy. The use of appropriate perforation sizes, depths and components in the mashrabiya reduced the cooling load by approximately 21% on the south facade, 17% on the west facade and 13% on the east facade. This study shows the importance of mashrabiya in modern buildings for indoor thermal comfort. This is considered an important guideline for sustainable building in this context

Elefantes en Iztapalapa, Ciudad de México

The act of artistic creation, with its potential to interrogate the established order and to give form to the intangible through language, has consistently sought to explore, represent, and unite two domains: the rational world of logical representation and the realm of experience, of image and metamorphosis, a free domain, unbound by function and now largely consigned to oblivion. This article draws upon Josep Llinàs's theoretical framework, concerning public space, and upon specific attributes of his proposals for a project in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, to explore the boundaries between public and private space -as a possibility of language and a construction of habitability- within a space that oscillates between the material and the celestial. This space attends to all scales, seeking to reintegrate entities and presences now displaced. The incorporation of figurative elements -elephants, eagles, traffic light figures, hanging clothes, and volcanoes- within these boundaries facilitates the encounter between two worlds. It acknowledges and celebrates existence within a temporality marked by detritus and fragments of something monumental and vanished, now ready to be re-engaged. The research argues for the significance of the scene in which these events unfold.

The study models Uruguay’s agricultural sector at a regional scale through a partial equilibrium model of land use. Once built, a baseline is established with a 10-year time horizon to produce projections of land use and production. It can also be used in a counterfactual manner for the analysis and evaluation of potential policy interventions or market changes. In Uruguay, there are few modeling studies of the sector, and there are no regional projections that capture the heterogeneity of agricultural production.

As part of a doctoral research project on military architecture in the Viceroyalty of Peru, a study of various historical fortifications was conducted. To analyze their layout, understand the technical principles applied in their design and construction, and assess their state of conservation, it was necessary to develop a precise architectural survey process. Among the cases examined, the Real Felipe Fortress of Callao stands out as one of the most significant military monuments in terms of historical, strategic, and heritage value. Due to its size and the complexity of its preservation conditions, the survey required the integration of both aerial and terrestrial recording. The former allowed for the accurate documentation of the entire fortified enclosure, while the latter enabled the detailed capture of specific construction elements. The combination of these two scales formed the methodological basis for its architectural analysis and heritage assessment.

Paral·lelament, recuperem eines conceptuals descolonials i indígenes. In a present marked by interconnected crises that call dominant Western thought into question, it becomes crucial to reimagine coexistence beyond traditional dichotomies and to make visible alternative ways of producing space. This research focuses on the Ecuadorian Amazon, a complex territory that demands new lenses to analyse the interdependence among different beings, economies, desires and intentions. To do so, we adopt microhistory as a tool for socio-spatial analysis, exploring the everyday life of Kichwa inhabitants in Tena. In parallel, we draw upon decolonial and Indigenous conceptual tools. This approach has revealed spatial devices that emerge from the body–earth relationship and that enable coexistence between different beings, actively reconfiguring the logics imposed in planning and urban design. Thus, life itself, the Kawsay, appears as a habitable future from within the present.

This paper presents a critical perspective on the limitation of current carbon-centric retrofit frameworks in the UK, advocating for the integration of psycho-social factors as essential metrics in assessing retrofit outcomes. Drawing on salutogenic theory of health promotion and adapting Maslow’s theory of needs to the housing context, it argues that safety, belonging, and meaning are fundamental human needs that the built environment must fulfil. Positioning the home as a core social construct and enabler of long-term coping, the paper proposes a theory-driven, human-centric approach to retrofit of homes, using qualitative data analysis of lived experience of a small number of individuals who reflect on their perception of their homes. The approach prioritises psycho-social dimensions of wellbeing, highlighting the importance of neighbourhood-scale evaluation and understanding of relational approaches to decision making. By examining how individuals interpret and navigate their homes, this research seeks to inform the development of more human-centric retrofit strategies that are more responsive to human needs placing long-term health, wellbeing, and lived experience at the centre of decision-making.
