Maldives national waste accounts 2018 & 2019 : final report
This is a report on the pilot compilation of the national Waste Accounts (2018-2019) focusing on waste generation and management within the Maldives. The Waste Accounts was prepared based on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounts (SEEA) methodology. Waste producers are classified according to the main economic industries most relevant to the Maldives. Waste categories and management methods were derived based on national policies and legislation as well as published reports and existing waste management practices in the Maldives. This technical assistance (TA) project was implemented by the National Bureau of Statistics of Maldives in cooperation with UNESCAP under the Strengthening statistical capacity of member states to address data availability challenges for environment-related SDGs under the Regular Programme of Technical Cooperation (RPTC).</p
The future is equal : gender equality in the technology industry
In view of the rapid digital transformation and digital divide, the importance of diversity and inclusion is magnified in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In particular, the existing underrepresentation of women in the technology industry, which may marginalize women in the future of work, warrants special attention. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a disproportionate impact on women and exacerbated gender inequality embedded in the social structure. To build back better, gender equality should be put at the forefront of the recovery agenda, thereby overcoming the slow pace of progress before the crisis and redressing gender imbalances in the technology industry.
This report analyzes the key barriers faced by women in the workplace of the technology industry as well as identifies effective national policies and company initiatives on promoting gender equality in China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. The findings and recommendations enable countries to advance women’s rights and representation, especially in the technology industry, thereby contributing to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
The report was developed by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, in partnership with Korea Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, Center for Gender Equality of Nagoya University and Ladies Who Tech.</p

Inequality of opportunity on Asia and the Pacific : financial inclusion
Inequality of Opportunity papers place men and women at the heart of sustainable and inclusive development. They do so by identifying areas where inequality jeopardizes a person's prospects, namely: education; women's access to sexual and reproductive health care; children's nutrition; decent work; basic water and sanitation; access to clean energy; and financial inclusion. Each of these opportunities is covered by specific commitments outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and addressed in separate thematic reports covering 27 countries throughout Asia and the Pacific.
ESCAP first discussed inequality of opportunity in its 2015 report. Time for Equality, establishing the distinction between inequality of outcome and inequality of opportunity. While the former depicts the consequences of unequally distributed income and wealth, the latter is concerned with access to key services necessary to fulfil one's basic rights.</p
Factors affecting the environmental and social risk management of financial institutions in selected Asia-Pacific developing countries
Considering the significant effect financial institutions (FIs) have on society and the environment, they have a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and addressing climate change concerns. Not surprisingly, there is a growing interest in how FIs manage the environmental and social (E&S) risks emanating from their activities. While studying the 'Innovative Climate Finance Mechanisms for Financial Institutions', we conducted a survey to investigate the factors affecting FIs' E&S performance in 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. This paper outlines the survey findings and provides insights into the factors affecting E&S performance of FIs. The paper identifies that awareness of E&S risks in the region is growing but from a low base and that E&S risks are increasingly integrated into risk management analysis and reporting frameworks. The paper demonstrates that although some FIs have made significant progress, considerable variation still exists among countries and institutions, and considerable work is still needed to improve E&S performance of FIs in the region. The paper highlights that although policy reforms and engagement can, over time, influence E&S performance of FIs, a lack of management support and institutional capacity remain significant constraints. The paper can assist policymakers in understanding the factors affecting E&S performance of FIs and in distilling the policy options needed to help them better integrate E&S risks into their operations
