SDG 12 : Responsible consumption and production

No full text
The region has regressed on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and urgently needs to reverse material consumption and footprint trends to meet the goal, notwithstanding progress on individual targets. Rising incomes and lifestyle changes and continued resource-intensive growth patterns are expected to further exacerbate resource depletion and ecosystem degradation. Concerted public and private action is needed to increase resource efficiency, fundamentally shift consumption patterns and production processes, improve waste management systems, and transition toward a more circular economy approach Countries should by now realise that we have a global socio-ecological crisis, and it is real and present, and not looming. This crisis is closely related to social unrest, stability and peace. COVID-19, in addition, has caused millions of people to lose their jobs. This means that national action plans/national development plans should prioritize issues associated with responsible production and consumption, and strongly focus on green economy, clean energy, green chemistry, and generating associated employment opportunities. They should also focus on giving their universities a mandate and support to conduct research into more sustainable packaging, more recyclable plastics, more degradable plastics, and clean energy. The region has regressed on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and urgently needs to reverse material consumption and footprint trends to meet the goal, notwithstanding progress on individual targets. Evolving Indian strategy on SDGs and scope for regional cooperation

Along with all countries, India too collectively adopted the SDGs the UN Summit of September 2015. In India, the commitment towards SDGs is central to its own development as sustainability is ingrained in India’s ethos and in line with it. Even prior to 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi coined the slogan: ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’ that is, ‘along with all, for the development of all’ which embodies the SDGs’ ultimate goal of ‘leaving no one behind’. As India readies to celebrate its 75th anniversary of Independence in 2022, the Government presented a vision of ‘’New India’’ for 2017-2022 that prioritized high-end manufacturing, infrastructure, effective healthcare policies, information technology with the goals of a ‘New India’ that is free of poverty, corruption, terrorism, communalism, casteism and ecological degradation, and unity of the entire country through good governance and technology. This paper attempts to highlight the country’s SDG progress and examines the main challenges in implementing the SDGs at national and subnational levels. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions to timelines and milestones for achieving the SDGs and it is thus, imperative to accelerate our efforts for achieving the targets of the Agenda 2030. In this context, subregional and regional cooperation efforts can greatly complement national strategies for achieving the SDGs and broader regional level coherence.</p

No full text
This is a report on the pilot compilation of the Waste Accounts (2019) in Bhutan using the System of environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) that integrates economic and environmental data to provide a more comprehensive view of the interrelationships between the economy and the environment. This document was developed in collaboration between the National Bureau of Statistics of Bhutan and UN ESCAP under the Strengthening statistical capacity of member states to address data availability challenges for environment-related SDGs under the Regular Programme of Technical Cooperation (RPTC). This is one of three projects that provided effective technical assistance and support enabling countries to compile water and waste accounts through shared knowledge and experience.</p
