    Technologies for adaptation to climate change in Asia-Pacific

    The third issue of Asia-Pacific Tech Monitor focusing on &lsquo;Technologies for adaptation to climate change in Asia-Pacific&rsquo;. The Asia-Pacific region is highly vulnerable to climate change. It is likely to face increased impacts including intense and frequent extreme events and sea level rise in the next few decades. Transformative adaptation enabled through better technologies has become vital to enhance resilience towards these impacts. As countries are raising their ambitions to respond to the challenges of climate change as part of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), adaptation technologies will play an important role in meeting these commitments and overall objectives of the Paris Agreement. Commitments for increased finance and technology transfer support to developing countries for enhancing collective ambitions and actions at the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) will be definitive to chart a pathway to achieve the adaptation and mitigation goals of Paris Agreement. This issue of Tech Monitor discusses how innovative technologies could support policymakers and practitioners to make the interventions for climate change adaptation more robust.     Universal access to all : maximizing the impact of clean cooking

    The clean cooking sector is underpinned by limited prioritization in the policy-making sphere and a chronic lack of financing. Numerous countries in the region have yet to establish clean cooking targets. SEforAll estimates that global investment levels account for less than 3 per cent of the annual requirement of US$4.5 billion to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2030. While the investment required seems substantial, the explicit and implicit costs of inaction on health, gender and the environment could be more than 500 times higher.3 Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) on universal access to clean cooking provides a blueprint for a complete transition to clean fuels and technology. Embedding the SDG 7 clean cooking target in national energy policies as well as the COVID-19 recovery stimulus will help avoid these costs while simultaneously contributing to the achievement of multiple SDGs on health, poverty, gender equality, air pollution and climate change. In this context, ESCAP conducted a global review to inform policymakers on the real-life impact of clean cooking programmes and policies. The review covered 46,115 households across 26 low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and the Latin America and Caribbean region

    Coal phase out and energy transition pathways for Asia and the Pacific

    The Asia-Pacific is highly reliant on fossil fuels. A key issue for the region is how to reverse its fossil fuel reliance, particularly on coal, in light of climate impacts and the sustainable development benefits possible through an energy transition to cleaner sources. The 'Coal Phase out and Energy Transition Pathways for Asia and the Pacific' report aims to provide insights into how the region can transition away from coal to a renewable based efficient energy system compatible with the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. The analytical framework of the study brings together a systematic review of literature and data to provide a background on the current situation, drivers of coal expansion in the region, options for a clean energy transition and the benefits of a transition to inform policy options. The report extracts data on coal share in power generation and capacity in the Asia Pacific, and provides analysis on the impact on greenhouse gas emissions at regional level. The paper also conducts a policy review to assess the proven policies in the region based on existing literature, to inform recommendations for governments in the region to adopt best practices

    This publication has been prepared as part of the activities of the UNDA project 'Transport and trade connectivity in the age of pandemics: contactless, seamless and collaborative UN solutionsThe Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has hit international trade worldwide and in Asia and the Pacific, underscoring the importance of maintaining trade connectivity not only for the immediate pandemic response, but also for the subsequent recovery efforts in order to build resilience to future disruptions. The report first describes, in the section II, the initial developments and lessons learnt in trade and transport facilitation practices in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Section III presents the results of a Survey on trade facilitation in times of crisis and pandemic in the Asia and the Pacific region. Finally, Section IV discusses the ways forward for trade facilitation measures to support a sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and how the Asia-Pacific region can be better equipped to build back better

    Special Theme: Harnessing fourth industrial revolution technologies for healthcare As the year 2021 is folding up, the world is gearing up to meet the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic. Armed with newer and innovative tools of science, technology and innovation (STI), countries are strengthening efforts to provide improved and faster health services to the affected population. Increased number of effective vaccines, drugs, and digital health solutions are helping countries to stem the pandemic. The year 2022 poses optimism for a better and healthy world. Frontier technologies such as the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Machine Learning and drones) have been successfully used for population screening, tracking the infection, prioritizing the use and allocation of resources, vaccine development and designing targeted responses. Prominent 4IR applications in healthcare include Telehealth or telemedicine to get remote support from health-care professionals; Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based identification of high-risk population and medical diagnostics; and Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)-based tools for remote patient monitoring, tracing and tracking of patients. An important feature of these technologies is that they can be used widely and made affordable for large segments of population. This issue of Asia-Pacific Tech Monitor discusses how innovative 4IR technologies can be harnessed to make the healthcare system more robust.
