Angewandte und zugleich kritische Religionswissenschaft
No full textReligionswissenschaft kann angewandt sein. Wenn es beispielsweise um den Einfluss von Religiosität auf die Gesundheit geht, ist das leicht verständlich. Aber darf religionswissenschaftliche Forschung auch von einer bestimmten Religionsgemeinschaft beauftragt sein? In diesem Aufsatz wird dargestellt, dass angewandte Religionswissenschaft durchaus dem Kriterium der doppelten Distanz entsprechen kann. Voraussetzung dafür ist eine empirisch-sozialwissenschaftliche, theoriebezogene und hypothesenprüfende Methodologie. Hier ist die Theorie, die sich in den religionswissenschaftlichen Konsens einfügen soll, der Standort religionswissenschaftlicher Kritik. Das Problem einer möglichen Instrumentalisierung der Forschungsergebnisse soll dann als forschungsethische Frage den einzelnen Forschenden überlassen bleiben. Insights from the study of religions can be applied to various practical questions, for instance, the influence of religion on mental health. But what about contract research by religious organisations, for example, for consulting services? In this article I will point out that the applied study of religions (Angewandte Religionswissenschaft) can still be scholarship critical of the scholar's perspective and of the religious ideology under examination. The basis for this is an empirical, social scientific, theorybased and hypothesis-testing methodology. Therefore, it is theory in the study of religions which is the actual subject of critical scholarship. Furthermore, it is argued that the problem of responsibility for any possible exploitation of research results lies with the individual scholar and is indeed a question of ethics

Das Charisma-Netzwerk von Braco: Plädoyer für die relationale Anpassung des Charisma-Konzepts
No full textCharisma, verstanden als die Zuschreibung des Außergewöhnlichen, ist ein rein relationales Konstrukt. Die Beschreibung einer Person oder eines Dings als charismatisch ist dieser Definition entsprechend irreführend. Der wissenschaftliche Diskurs über Charisma stolpert allerdings bis anhin noch über diesen sprachlichen Stein. Somit blieben auch nach der seit Weber geforderten Relationalisierung des Konzepts Sinnartefakte anderer Charisma-Diskurse bestehen. Mithilfe der Perspektive der sozialen Netzwerkanalyse sollen diese Begrifflichkeiten in folgenden Beitrag geschärft und das Charisma-Konzept erweitert werden. Anstatt von charismatischen Akteuren zu sprechen, schlage ich vor nur noch Beziehungen und Netzwerke charismatisch, Akteure hingegen charismatisiert oder charismatisierend zu nennen. Am Beispiel des Heilers Braco wird dieser Vorschlag demonstriert, gezeigt wie sich Charisma-Netzwerke über Zuschreibungsprozesse konstituieren und verbreiten und wie die Strukturlogik von Events die Charismatisierung normativieren. Charisma, understood as the attribution of the extraordinary, is a purely relational construct. Hence, the description of a person or a thing as charismatic is incorrect in accordance with this definition. The scientific discourse about charisma until now still stumbles over this linguistic hurdle. So even after Weber’s postulated relationalization of the concept, artifacts of meaning from different discourses about charisma remained. The following article will sharpen the terminology and concept around charisma by implementing the perspective of social network analysis. Instead of speaking of charismatic actors, I suggest to reserve the term charismatic for relationships and networks only. When speaking about actors, however, the terms charismatizing and charismatized will be suggested. Using the example of the healer Braco this proposal will be demonstrated. Further, light will be shed on the constitution of networks of charisma by attribution processes and the normatization of charismatization, which becomes apparent in the analysis of event structures
Die »Sympathie mit dem Tode«: Thomas Manns Zauberberg zwischen Religion und Literatur
No full textUnter der Prämisse einer Verflechtung von Religions- und Literaturgeschichte wird im vorliegenden Artikel der Zauberberg - Thomas Manns großes Projekt seiner mittleren Jahre - selbst als Teil der Religionsgeschichte (der Moderne) gelesen. Gerahmt durch eine Anbindung an das Feld von Religion und Literatur ist das Ziel, eine Öffnung der Deutungsmöglichkeiten von Literatur als Quelle mit religionshistorischem Potential aufzuzeigen. Der Zauberberg bietet sich an, weil er einerseits in einer religiös hoch produktiven - wie ambigen - Epoche der Moderne entstand und andererseits als Zeitroman seine Zeitgenossenschaft selbst in den Blick nimmt und reflektiert. Der Zauberberg als ein Beispiel fiktionaler Literatur soll hier als religionswissenschaftlicher Gegenstand in den Blick rücken und neue religionsgeschichtliche Perspektiven anbieten. Following a conceptual intertwining of the history of religions and the history of literature, the Magic Mountain - Thomas Mann’s major project during much of the middle of his life - here will be read as a part of the (modern) history of religions. Linked to the field of the study of literature and religion, the aim is to expand the possibilities of interpreting literature as a historical source with religio-historical value. Being written at a religiously highly productive - and ambiguous - moment of modernity and being highly self-reflective upon its own standing among its contemporaneity, the Magic Mountain is particularly apt to this proposition. As an example of fictional literature, it becomes a subject of research within the study of religion and thus opens historical perspectives

Up or Out. Arbeitsbedingungen und -zufriedenheit des religionswissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses in Deutschland: Ergebnisse einer Umfrage des Arbeitskreises Mittelbau und Nachwuchs mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Vereinigung für Religionswissenschaft
No full textDie vorliegende Studie basiert auf einer quantitativ-qualitativen Erhebung der Arbeitsbedingungen und -zufriedenheit des religionswissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses (d.h. ohne unbefristete Anstellung als Professor*in). Die Erhebung wurde von Mai bis Juli 2022 vom Arbeitskreis Mittelbau und Nachwuchs (AKMN) der Deutschen Vereinigung für Religionswissenschaft (DVRW) durch- geführt. Sie ist eine erweiterte Variante einer Erhebung von 2015. Auf der Grundlage der Umfrageergebnisse werden die Arbeitsbedingungen und ihre Auswirkungen auf berufliche Perspektiven und persönliche Lebensumstände der Betroffenen beschrieben und mit denen von 2015 verglichen. Zudem werden die speziellen Herausforderungen während der Corona-Pandemie dargestellt. Die Studie ist nicht nur eine aussagekräftige Untersuchung der Entwicklung der Arbeitsbedingungen des religionswissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses, sondern auch ein Beitrag zur derzeit intensiv geführten Debatte um Beschäftigungsverhältnisse an deutschen Universitäten. The present study is based on a mixed quantitative-qualitative survey of the working conditions and satisfaction of young scholars in religious studies (i.e., all those without a professorship). The survey was carried out in 2022 by the working group for mid-level faculty and junior staff (AKMN) of the German Association for Religious Studies (DVRW). It is an extended but comparable variant of a survey from 2015. Working conditions and their effects on professional prospects and per- sonal living conditions of those affected are described based on the survey results and compared with those from 2015. Special challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic have also been considered and reported on here. The study is not only a meaningful examination of the development of the working conditions of young religious scholars, but also a contribution to the currently intense debate about employment conditions at German universities

Feeling Out of the Box: Ambivalences of Unexpected Amelioration among Sickened Health Professionals through Displacing Cooperations in Brazil
No full textHow do people with diagnosed autoimmune diseases feel, and what they do and think when they unexpectedly encounter an unregistered drug that may help them to heal, instead of palliatively controlling symptoms of autoimmune reactions through conventional immunosuppressants? What then if they are health professionals who became patients? How does such an encounter affect their lives, their perceptions and attitudes towards their respective medico-legal environments? In this article, I analyse letters exchanged between a physician in Brazil and eight of his patients, who are also health professionals, mainly between 1997 and 2000, concerning their experiencing of using an unregistered medicine, the “anti-brucellic vaccine” (VAB), to treat different immunopathologies such as rheumatoid arthritis. Considering VAB users as capable of systematically evaluating and communicating their experiences of illness and recovery, I seek to understand and discuss the tensions surrounding the repositionings and attitudes of affected health professionals within the co-production of medical evidence in the context of disruptive biotechnological innovation in Brazil. Apparently, their own experience with VAB seemed to have enabled them to re-ground their medical knowledge, experience, and skills in relation to their own and someone else’s health in anticipation of the mediation regularly played out by conventional medical knowledge, technologies and procedures. Furthermore, when VAB-using physicians self-analyse and dialogue with others, writing and exchanging evaluative reports about their own and others’ health and therapeutic experiences of using VAB, they seemed to implicitly co-produce medical evidence that can be taken into consideration by potential users
