Designing an effective and engaging augmented reality game for children to learn about biodiversity
Preserving biodiversity is vital, and early education plays a key role in fostering environmental awareness. An Augmented Reality Outdoor Mission (AROM) has been created as an innovative educational tool for children between the ages 7 and 11. AROM combines entertainment and education and is designed to engage elementary schoolchildren and families in an immersive learning experience. A user centered design approach was followed during the creation of AROM. The evaluation encompassed two phases: the first involved iterative prototype testing with the target group, revealing usability problems, while the second entailed a field study regarding the educational impact. During the latter, 107 children played the final version of AROM, accompanied by pre- and post-experience questionnaires. These efforts identified critical design elements, resulting in a final version of AROM that provides a good user experience and effectively conveys biodiversity knowledge. The project’s results underscore the potential of Augmented Reality in educational, informal environments, paving the way for future initiatives that harness the power of technology to educate and inspire environmental consciousness
Nanosecond time synchronization over a 2.4 GHz long-range wireless link
Time synchronization between geographically separated equipment, such as, for example, that required in sensor networks for radio localization, is often based on global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). However, in environments that are GNSS-denied due to signal blockage or interference, alternative timing synchronization methods are necessary. In this work, an experimental wireless time synchronization system based on long-range (LoRa) modulation has been developed and tested in the field. LoRa modulation operating in the license-free 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band was chosen due to the potentially large coverage area of several kilometers and the availability of a ranging engine in the SX1280 transceiver by Semtech, which facilitates the implementation of time synchronization. The prototype system was tested over 170 m, where it achieved a time deviation (TDEV) of 30 ps for an average time of 1 s and a maximum TDEV of 3 ns over one day of measurement, improving over existing work on time synchronization with LoRa modulation by around three orders of magnitude. The field tests showed that ns accuracy can be achieved using LoRa modulation, making it suitable for the synchronization of remote sites, for example, for radio localization

How to choose an emollient? Pharmaceutical and sensory attributes for product selection
Introduction: Emollients are part of daily body care and have become indispensable therapeutic adjuvants for the treatment of dry skin conditions. Adherence to topical treatments, notably for dry skin conditions, has been reported to be low. The underlying reasons may include insufficient medical and nursing support for product selection, specific product attributes, aspects of product application, and product feel on the skin. Attempts have also been made to portray lipid content, galenic product format, or rheological attributes (pharmaceutical attributes) as adherence-promoting or adherence-preventing properties. In the treatment of dry dermatoses with emollients, there is little information describing and relating to these various features. We explored whether the sensory attributes of selected emollients were associated with common product attributes such as lipid content, viscosity, or galenic product format and discuss the extent to which this information is useful for product selection. Methods: Nine trained panellists evaluated ten selected emollients based on a set of 18 predefined sensory attributes according to a standard guide for sensory descriptive analysis. Viscosity was determined using a rotational rheometer. Results: The emollients had product-specific sensory attributes. Lipid content, viscosity, and galenic product format are not generally indicative of sensory product attributes. Conclusion: Contrary to popular belief, lipid content and viscosity are not generally indicative of sensory product attributes. This is mainly due to the different physicochemical properties of the lipid-phase ingredients, which are product-specific and diverse. As most emollients contain significant amounts of volatile ingredients that evaporate during and after application, their galenic format changes dramatically. Therefore, this is not a viable selection criterion. Because refined information on sensory product attributes, as compiled for this study, is rarely available in everyday life, eliciting individual and subjective patient preferences through dialogue remains crucial. Augmenting rehabilitation robotics with spinal cord neuromodulation : a proof of concept
Rehabilitation robotics aims to promote activity-dependent reorganization of the nervous system. However, people with paralysis cannot generate sufficient activity during robot-assisted rehabilitation and, consequently, do not benefit from these therapies. Here, we developed an implantable spinal cord neuroprosthesis operating in a closed loop to promote robust activity during walking and cycling assisted by robotic devices. This neuroprosthesis is device agnostic and designed for seamless implementation by nonexpert users. Preliminary evaluations in participants with paralysis showed that the neuroprosthesis enabled well-organized patterns of muscle activity during robot-assisted walking and cycling. A proof-of-concept study suggested that robot-assisted rehabilitation augmented by the neuroprosthesis promoted sustained neurological improvements. Moreover, the neuroprosthesis augmented recreational walking and cycling activities outdoors. Future clinical trials will have to confirm these findings in a broader population
From ground to air : the paradigm shift in GBAS monitoring and its benefits
The Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is a differential navigation system that provides corrections and integrity parameters to support precision approaches of aircraft. The currently implemented GBAS Approach Service Types (GAST) C was developed to support CAT-I operations (and CAT-II operations in certain cases). The GAST D has been developed to support also CAT-III operations based on single-frequency GPS navigation. However, it is expected that availability of this service will not reach sufficiently high values in all parts of the world. The GAST E service type currently under development will include a significant shift in system architecture by incorporating dual-frequency, multi-constellation capabilities and not provide corrections anymore. Instead, under the GAST E concept, the ground station will transmit raw pseudorange and carrier phase measurements. This enables shifting the burden of integrity monitoring partially from the ground to the airborne receiver with potential benefits regarding integrity monitoring. This paper revisits the derivation of GBAS ground monitoring requirements in light of the proposed GAST E architecture and examines the potential for relaxation of these requirements. One monitor that could specifically benefit is the Code-Carrier Divergence (CCD) monitor, currently allocated to the ground subsystem in GAST D. By leveraging the airborne subsystem’s knowledge about relevant parameters used to derive the monitoring threshold, an airborne implementation of the CCD monitor can mitigate the need for conservative assumptions that are currently necessary to be applied by the ground system. Two monitoring concepts are considered: an adapted ground-based approach and an airborne-based monitoring approach. The results indicate that shifting CCD monitoring to the airborne subsystem enables a significant increase of the monitoring thresholds while maintaining compliance with the underlying safety requirements. The proposed adaptation reduces the risk of false alerts and has the potential to improve availability of the GBAS service
Care Management für Menschen mit neuromuskulären Erkrankungen : das Potential eines Beratungs- und Koordinationsdienstes
Neuromuskuläre Erkrankungen (NMD) können das Leben von betroffenen Kindern und Erwachsenen schwer beeinträchtigen. Die Behandlung ist oft komplex und involviert viele professionelle und informelle Dienste. Um diese Personengruppe bestmöglich zu unterstützen, wurde ein Tätigkeitsprofil für ein Care Management (CM) entwickelt. Mittels Mixed-Methods Design wurde die aktuelle Versorgungssituation von Menschen mit NMD in der Schweiz untersucht. Es wurden Versorgungslücken und Erwartungen an ein CM beschrieben. Auf der Basis dieser Erkenntnisse folgte die Entwicklung eines Tätigkeitsprofils im Rahmen eines zyklischem Co-design Prozesses mit Betroffenen, Angehörigen und Fachpersonen. Es resultierte ein umfassendes Anforderungs- und Kompetenzprofil sowie Schulungsprogramm für ein NMD CM, welches die pädiatrische sowie die adulte Versorgung miteinschliesst. Das Tätigkeitsprofil beinhaltet drei Leistungsbereiche: 1) die direkte klinische Praxis, 2) die interprofessionelle Zusammenarbeit und 3) die Fachentwicklung und Netzwerkarbeit. Das CM wurde infolgedessen in acht ambulanten Teams in drei Sprachregionen implementiert und diese werden derzeit wissenschaftlich evaluiert. Der Bedarf für ein NMD CM wurde evaluiert und in ein sehr gut fundiertes Konzept integriert. Der Einbezug von Betroffenen förderte die Qualität des Tätigkeitsprofils. Weitere Untersuchungen sind erforderlich, um die Umsetzbarkeit und Auswirkungen der neuen Rollen beurteilen zu können
