Interdependencies of circular business model dimensions : analyzing the role of supply chain partners
Family Systems Care ‒ expert consensus on ethics behind committed practice
Background: Ethically challenging situations often arise in interactions between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and families. Although the Calgary models offer guidance for practical work and are beneficial in various challenging situations, explicit awareness and recognition of the ethical concepts and theories underlying Family Systems Care (FSC) is generally lacking.
Method - Research aim: This study examined the basis of FSC in virtue ethics, deontology, and teleology.
Research design: Utilizing a qualitative design, an expert consensus was conducted through two focus group interviews, a Delphi group, and an expert panel.
Participants and research context: The expert consensus consisted of 23 professionals in FSC from various specialities, including nurses (n = 18), midwives (n = 4), and a general practitioner, who explored ethical considerations in clinical practice.
Ethical considerations: The research project was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of participants’ informed consent and the Declaration of Helsinki.
Findings: Participants recognized the significance of classical virtues such as faith, fortitude, hope, and caritas in FSC. They emphasized that these virtues not only guide HCPs in their practice but also empower families to rediscover their strengths amid suffering. Additionally, the integration of deontological principles and teleological perspectives highlighted the importance of balancing individual and collective well-being, and fostering compassionate relationships while navigating ethical complexities in therapeutic conversations.
Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of virtue ethics, deontology, and teleology in guiding HCPs’ moral reasoning within FSC. Participants emphasized respect and appreciation as essential values for maintaining trust with families during ethical challenges. By integrating ethical theories into practice, HCPs can navigate complex situations effectively, fostering compassionate and dignified care

Post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) after stopping antidepressants : a systematic review with meta-narrative synthesis
Aims: The literature on persistent antidepressant withdrawal symptoms is sparse. This systematic review is the first to examine the prevalence, duration, severity, risk/protective factors and treatment strategies for post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) following the discontinuation of antidepressant medications.
Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science and PsycInfo, focusing on newer-generation antidepressants. The electronic database search was complemented with handsearching reference lists of pivotal studies. We included original studies in adults reporting on PAWS and providing data about epidemiology and clinical management of withdrawal symptoms persisting for at least 6 weeks.
Results: The literature search yielded 1286 results, with 26 records assessed for eligibility, and seven studies fulfilled our selection criteria. Prevalence data were sparse, with one small cohort study reporting a 15% prevalence rate for PAWS in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia. The duration of PAWS varied considerably across studies, ranging from 1.5 to 166 months. Long-term paroxetine use emerged as a potential risk factor for the development of PAWS. There was no reliable evidence to support the effectiveness of various treatment strategies, including the reinstatement of antidepressant medication, the use of benzodiazepines and the provision of cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Conclusions: The current evidence on PAWS is sparse and predominantly of low certainty. The presence of withdrawal symptoms, lasting several months and possibly even years in some patients, underscores the need for further research with rigorous methodology. Large prospective cohort studies are needed to assess the epidemiology of PAWS, while randomized controlled trials are quired to test the efficacy of clinical interventions to treat PAWS

The prevalence of compassion fatigue among midwives in German-speaking Switzerland : a quantitative cross-sectional study
Problem: Reports indicate that many midwives suffer from compassion fatigue (CF) as a result of exposure to heavy workloads, traumatic events, and other stressful situations.
Background: Studies have shown that CF often drives midwives to leave the profession. It also negatively affects their ability to provide compassionate care.
Aim: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of CF among midwives in German-speaking Switzerland and to examine the associations between demographic and work-related factors with CF.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between September and December 2022, using the validated "Professional Quality of Life" (ProQOL) questionnaire to assess compassion fatigue. Relevant demographic and professional characteristics were added to the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, bivariable analyses and the generalised additive model (GAM) were applied.
Findings: Of the 374 participating midwives, 31.8 % (n = 119) were affected by compassion fatigue. The GAM model indicated that frequent exposure to traumatic events had the strongest impact on compassion fatigue scores (estimate: 5.17). A smaller impact was observed for attending traumatic births occasionally (estimate: 4.16), followed by being rather/much dissatisfied with their job (estimate: 3.31) and experiencing psychological burden (estimate: 1.93). The weakest effect was found in midwives who were rather satisfied with their job (estimate: 1.49).
Discussion: Factors associated with CF are multidimensional and multifactorial. Identifying potential solutions and preventive measures can be complex.
Conclusion: Further research is essential to support midwives affected by compassion fatigue and to develop effective preventive measures
How large language models are transforming teachers' assessment of student competency : a case study on LLM-based report writing
Evaluating student competencies is critical to fostering academic success, but the traditional process of assessment and report generation is time-consuming and labor-intensive for teachers. The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) presents an opportunity to automate this process, potentially reducing the workload for educators. However, concerns such as hallucinations in LLM outputs and the lack of usability studies involving teachers raise questions about their reliability and practical application. In response, we developed an LLM-based report writing system specifically designed for real-time competency evaluation. To assess its effectiveness, we conducted a case study involving five educational experts, each with over 15 years of experience. These experts used the system to generate student competency reports and found them to be both sensible and specific. While they expressed concerns about issues like insufficient detail, they recognized the system's significant time-saving benefits. Our findings demonstrate that LLMs can positively impact teachers' competency assessments by streamlining the reporting process, offering valuable support for educators
Parametric nonlinear Volterra series via machine learning : transonic aerodynamics
This study introduces an approach for modeling unsteady transonic aerodynamics within a parametric space using the Volterra series to capture aerodynamic responses and machine learning to enable interpolation. The first- and second-order Volterra kernels were derived from indicial aerodynamic responses obtained through computational fluid dynamics, with the second-order kernel calculated as a correction to the dominant linear response. Machine learning algorithms, specifically artificial neural network and Gaussian process regression, were used to interpolate kernel coefficients within a parameter space defined by the Mach number and angle of attack. The methodology was applied to two- and three-dimensional test cases in the transonic regime. The results underscore the benefit of including a second-order kernel to address strong nonlinearity and demonstrate the effectiveness of neural networks. The approach achieved a level of accuracy that appeared sufficient for use in conceptual design
