The Old Mansion
Leading up to the first day of classes in November 1896 were grueling months of preparation: cutting through masses of underbrush, trimming trees, attempting to enlive long-neglected clay land red as blood and hard as rocks, and repairing a decaying Old Mansion house with its row of slave cabins almost dropping to pieces. Stood this impressive building known as Old Mansion, former residence of the slave plantation owner. Used as living quarters for Oakwood\u27s staff of four and for the first eight female students, lent elegance and beauty to the early campus.https://ouscholars.oakwood.edu/birth-of-oakwood-1896-gallery/1004/thumbnail.jp
