Space for Experience: on Amelia Bowles’ and Nadia Guerroui’s Expanded Impermanence
An essay written to accompany a joint exhibition of new artworks by Amelia Bowles’ and Nadia Guerroui at Saturation Point in London (17-22 May 2022)
Taking stock; a review of the state of forensic psychology as revealed through an analysis of journal articles 2015-20
A total of 3719 articles appearing in 5 key generalist Forensic Psychology Journals (N=1374) and 6 more specialist targeted forensically related journals (N=2345) between 2015-2020 were subject to a bibliometric analysis to reveal trends in research topics, populations studied, jurisdiction and research methods employed. Research on offenders dominated and over half of all the papers were located in North American jurisdictions. About a third of papers made explicit reference to diversity and two thirds of research designs employed quantitative methodologies. Discussion comments on changing trends over time from forensic psychology’s initial narrow focus on witness testimony to its current broader remit, and the different coverage between targeted and generalist journals. The conclusion offers some reflections for future forensic psychology
Early detection of risk of reading difficulties using a working memory assessment battery
Research suggests a role for aspects of the working memory system in reading. While much of the evidence points to a role for working memory capacity and the phonological loop, more recent work indicates a role for the central executive component, although findings remain unclear. There is an identified need for a reliable screening measure for risk of reading difficulties in children who are pre-readers. Recent research suggests that working memory measures may contribute to such a measure in addition to existing tests of phonological ability, non-verbal reasoning, motor skills and language. One hundred and two children aged between 56 and 69 months were assessed on measures of reading accuracy, working memory capacity, processing speed and a range of measures designed to assess central executive functioning. Linear regression, discriminant function analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to determine the predictive qualities and factor structure of the working memory assessment battery. Discriminant function analysis indicated that the working memory assessment battery was able to significantly discriminate between children who were at risk and not at risk of reading difficulties (as indicated by an independent measure). Linear regression and Confirmatory Factor Analysis revealed that the tests were a good predictor of the later outcome, particularly the alliteration fluency and sentence verification tasks. Therefore, the working memory assessment battery promises to be a useful screening measure for potential reading difficulties in educational settings, facilitating early effective intervention
Exploring the experiences of a community palliative care team as services were adapted to meet the demand of the COVID-19 pandemic
During COVID-19, it was critical that services adapted to meet the high demands of the pandemic. This qualitative study explores the experiences of several staff members of the community palliative care team, as they adapted the delivery of their services to such pressures. Semi-structured interviews via a virtual platform were conducted and four themes were identified: service development, communication, inter-professional relationships and support mechanisms. The participants supported the change in service delivery and use of technology to triage patients. The participants also reported improved collaboration and patient care-coordination, and enhanced support mechanisms used by the team helped sustain resilience and wellbeing. Although challenging, the team embraced the changes and described improved collaboration and coordination of patient care
Rethinking the biomedical view of pain: time for upstream perspectives?
Background
Most strategies to reduce the burden of pain in society are downstream, managing the situation once pain has become a problem, with a lack of health promotion discourse in mainstream pain journals (Johnson et al., 2014). As human society and living conditions evolve, solutions are needed for human challenges that arise. In recent times, modern urban Anthropocene lifestyles have created unique and ever-changing living conditions, personal circumstances, building environment, access to green spaces, occupational conditions, eating options, technology innovation and lifestyle choices. This has resulted in improvements in health, well-being and the quality and duration of life, with age-standardised disability-adjusted life-years rates for global health steadily improving over the past 30 years (Diseases & Injuries, 2020). Paradoxically though, the proportion of years lived with disability from non-communicable diseases and injuries has increased over the past 30 years, with non-communicable disease and injury constituting over half of all disease burden in 11 countries, and revealing a need for better intervention strategies (Diseases & Injuries, 2020).

Conclusions
We believe the social ecological model may help us to:
1. Better understand the concept of health and the role that the environment plays in promoting health.
2. Offer insights on the phenomenon of pain and inform strategies to reduce the burden of pain on society.
The question of how current society deals with pain and who sees pain as their responsibility have been largely neglected.
Kress and colleagues argue that the views of all stakeholders need to be involved in creating a more successful holistic approach to chronic pain management (Kress et al., 2015). Scholars and practitioners from diverse areas of expertise may offer non-medicalised perspectives to inform pain management solutions and bring a fresh agenda of required changes with the potential to provide previously ignored innovations. Consideration of broader perspectives is likely to promote better health care and lifestyle decisions for people living with persistent pain
A new approach in the making: reinvigorating engineering education in UK schools
The value of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education, for STEM subjects and for developing the outcomes desired of a broader education, has seen significant interest in recent years. In the UK educational pathways into engineering are limited and engineering is rarely mentioned in the curriculum. Its closest partner, Design Technology, is typically under-resourced, especially in primary schools. However, the perceived value of STEAM in primary education has led to a range of different initiatives which have made this a fertile testbed for new approaches; approaches which will, over the coming decade, filter through all phases of education. Critically, STEAM has been identified, through its fusion with the arts, as fostering creative thinking in ways useful to STEM, particularly engineering. Additionally, it is argued that STEAM, if implemented early enough, can diversify the range of individuals considering careers in engineering.
We draw on research of a five-year, primary education arts-engineering project which showed the efficacy of this active, embodied, inquiry-based STEAM approach in developing confident, creative learners, who felt they had agency in their learning, and a further two-year project working with teachers to design innovative art-engineering schemes of work following this model. The research explores the views of the engineers/designers, teachers, artists and pupils involved.
The model developed from the research, the Trowsdale Art-Making Model for Education (TAME), has been tested by teachers as a practical approach to designing more embodied and inquiry-based curricula and pedagogies which teachers claim has enabled pupils to develop greater agency, confidence and competence in creative design and making practices. The engineers involved identified these behaviours as critical in fostering children’s interest, and in coaching their ability in engineering
Building reflective capability to enhance coaching practice
The ability to reflect on our work is increasingly recognised as a vital competence of skilled professional practice. However, reflection is a concept that has proved difficult to define and operationalise which can hamper the ability to devise effective means of enhancing this capability. This article examines the concept of reflection, reviews some of the literature which seeks to inform our understanding of reflective practice, and provides an illustration of its use in coaching research and practice. The article concludes with some recommendations for coaches and coaching psychologists who wish to develop their skills as reflective practitioners
Why do so few people with heart failure receive cardiac rehabilitation?
Many people with heart failure do not receive cardiac rehabilitation despite a strong evidence base attesting to its effectiveness, and national and international guideline recommendations. A more holistic approach to heart failure rehabilitation is proposed as an alternative to the predominant focus on exercise, emphasising the important role of education and psychosocial support, and acknowledging that this depends on patient need, choice and preference. An individualised, needs-led approach, exploiting the latest digital technologies when appropriate, may help fill existing gaps, improve access, uptake and completion, and ensure optimal health and wellbeing for people with heart failure and their families. Exercise, education, lifestyle change and psychosocial support should, as core elements, unless contraindicated due to medical reasons, be offered routinely to people with heart failure, but tailored to individual circumstances, such as with regard to age and frailty, and possibly for recipients of cardiac implantable electronic devices or left ventricular assist devices
