Assessment in field education, capability, competence and contradictions

    No full text
Assessment in field education is fundamental to ensuring capable social work graduates. Assessment is often identified as a challenge for field educators, particularly when students are struggling with placement learning. This chapter examines the literature and research about student assessment. The purpose of assessment, the evidence used in assessment and the different factors impacting on the assessment process are discussed. Concern is highlighted about the quality of assessment with some students passing placement who may not be appropriate practitioners in the future

Abstract Objective: To analyse the effects of aromatherapy using Melissa Officinalis essential oil, applied by massage to hands and forearms of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease. and to evaluate the effect on their perceived overall quality of life. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in two nursing homes in Italy in 2018. Data were collected through individual qualitative structured interviews based on the Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s disease (QoL-AD) questionnaire and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Authors referred to STROBE guidelines for quality reporting of observational studies. Results: Treatment with Melissa Officinalis showed positive effects on all patients after the 12th week of treatment. The results were most evident in patients in class 3 MMSE. However, class 4 MMSE patients also benefited from the treatment. Conclusions: The aromatherapy treatment delivered in this observational study, using Melissa Officinalis essential oil applied to hands and forearms, showed an improvement in the quality of life of the patients living in two different nursing homes. Considering the small sample available for this study, further research is recommended about the possible effects and effectiveness of aromatherapy using Melissa Officinalis essential oil for patients affected by Alzheimer’s disease

Handbook of animal models in neurological disorders

    No full text
Handbook of Animal Models in Neurological Disorders will better readers’ understanding of a large variety of animal models and their applicability in studying a number of neurological disorders. Featuring sections on brain injury, stroke and neuroinflammation, this volume discusses in detail the utility, success and pitfalls of multiple models for each condition. Multiple disorders are covered, ranging from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS, to multiple sclerosis, headache, migraine, and others. With expert authors, this book has applicability for anyone pursuing neuroscience or biomedical research working to better understand, study and ultimately treat neurological dysfunction

Doing together: reflections on facilitating the co-production of participatory action research with marginalised populations

    Get PDF
Recognising the limited literature detailing the practical application of co-production principles and practices within sport, exercise and health research, critical reflections on co-production principles and practice are shared here, drawing on two participatory action research (PAR) projects in the United Kingdom (UK). Co-production and PAR are distinguished, and their commonalities discussed. Both projects were facilitated by occupational therapists and concerned with health inequities and social justice. The Voices for Inclusive Activity project brought disabled people together online to explore more accessible and inclusive approaches to evaluate disability sport and physical activity. The Positive Mental Attitude project took place with a community-based football league for people with experience of mental distress and explored the nature and value of participation. Both projects involved researching with people who are often excluded from research. Addressing power imbalances can function to engage marginalised people in processes of knowledge production and enable social justice. Co-production offers useful principles that are democratic, inclusive, collaborative, and participatory, but the process is not straightforward. The reflections within this paper focus on the challenges and opportunities the first and second authors faced as facilitators of co-produced research. Participant and co-researcher quotes reveal how participatory methods and approaches address gaps in experiential knowledge of exclusion and marginalisation. The potential for co-produced research to influence policy and practice is outlined

The effectiveness of NIV and CPAP training on the Job in COVID-19 acute care wards: a Nurses’ self-assessment of skills

    No full text
Abstract: Background: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in COVID-19 patients outside of intensive care unit (ICU) settings was a feasible support during the pandemic outbreak. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an “on the job” NIV training program provided to 66 nurses working in 3 COVID-19 wards in an Italian university hospital. Methods: A quasi-experimental longitudinal before–after study was designed. The NIV Team education program, provided by expert ICU nurses, included: 3 h sessions of training on the job during work-shifts about the management of helmet-continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) Venturi systems, and NIV with oronasal and full-face masks. An eleven-item “brief skills self-report tool” was administered before and after the program to explore the perception of NIV education program attendees about their level of skills. Results: In total, 59 nurses responded to the questionnaire. There was an improvement in the skill levels of the management of Helmet-CPAP (median before training 2, inter-quartile range (IQR) 0–6; median after training 8, IQR 3–9; p < 0.0001), and mask-NIV (median before training 2, IQR 0–6; median after training 8, IQR 3–9; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Training on the job performed by expert ICU nurses can be a valuable and fast means to implement new Helmet-CPAP and mask-NIV skills outside of ICUs

    Restorying trauma: child sexual abuse

    No full text
This chapter explores how narratives of trauma can represent a central framework to understand and respond to sexual violence in the United Kingdom. Using written and visual narratives, it critically examines trauma experienced by adult victims/survivors of child sexual abuse through the prism of recovery. In so doing, it explores the complex and precarious relationship between story, storyteller and storytelling. The chapter highlights the tensions which frame how and whether a story can be told or heard, contributing towards valuing certain victim/survivor experiences and silencing those whose stories do not fit. Ultimately, it seems, to facilitate a move beyond the experiences of trauma, there is a salient need to redefine the boundaries of storytelling so as to accommodate the complexity and multiplicity of the experiences themselves

Malware detection in Android IoT systems using deep learning

    Get PDF
The Android Operating System (AOS) has been evolving since its inception and it has become one of the most widely used operating system for the Internet of Things (IoT). Due to the high popularity and reliability of AOS for IoT, it is a target of many cyber-attacks which can cause compromise of privacy, financial loss, data integrity, unauthorized access, denial of services and so on. The Android-based IoT (AIoT) devices are extremely vulnerable to various malwares due to the open nature and high acceptance of Android in the market. Recently, several detection preventive malwares are developed to conceal their malicious activities from analysis tools. Hence, conventional malware detection techniques could not be applied and innovative countermeasures against such anti-detection malwares are indispensable to secure the AIoT. In this paper, we proposed the novel deep learning-based real-time multiclass malware detection techniques for the AIoT using dynamic analysis. The results show that the proposed technique outperforms existing malware detection techniques and achieves detection accuracy up to 99.87%

Impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on reporting of rape, serious sexual offences, and domestic abuse in one English police

    Get PDF
Research suggests that during the Covid-19 pandemic reports of rapes and serious sexual offences to the authorities have declined whilst calls to domestic violence helplines have soared. This paper focuses on the impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak on reporting to the police in cases of rape, serious sexual offences, and domestic abuse in one police force area in England. Data from the force’s crime reporting system was provided from 2018 to 2021, including over 10,000 reports of rapes and serious sexual offences and over 5,000 reports of domestic abuse. An Interrupted Time Series analysis was used to evaluate the impact of lockdown on reporting rates, with segmented regression to measure the changes in reporting before and after the start of the pandemic in March 2020. This paper is the first of its kind to explore the impact of Covid-19 on sexual and domestic violence at more than an aggregate level, demonstrating the how Covid-19 has had a variable impact on different groups of victims, and how stay at home orders specifically have impacted on reporting rates. These data provide novel and valuable insights into the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the reporting of sexual violence and domestic abuse
