    Understanding chronic pain in the ubiquitous community: the role of open data

    The combined use of social media, open data, and Artificial Intelligence has the potential to support practitioners and empower patients/citizens living with persistent pain, both as local and online communities. Given the wide availability of digital technology today, both practitioners and interested individuals can be connected with virtual communities and can support each other from the comfort of their homes. Digital means may represent new avenues for exploring the complexity of the pain experience. Online interactions of patients, data on effective treatments, and data collected by wearable devices may represent an incredible source of psychological, sociological, and physiological pain-related information. Digital means might provide several solutions that enhance inclusiveness and motivate patients to share personal experiences, limiting the sense of isolation in both rural and metropolitan areas. Building on the consensus of the usefulness of social media in enhancing the understanding of persistent pain and related subjective experiences via online communities and networks, we provide relevant scenarios where the effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare delivery might be improved by the adoption of the digital technologies mentioned above and repeated subsequently. The aim of this perspective paper is to explore the potential of open data, social media, and Artificial Intelligence in improving the prevention and management of persistent pain by adopting innovative non-biomedical approaches

    Theory-informed strategies to address factors anticipated to influence implementation and people's participation in community pharmacy-based diabetes prevention services.

    Early identification of non-diabetic hyperglycaemia and implementation of diet and lifestyle changes can prevent type 2 diabetes. However, low participation in diabetes prevention services remains a problem in the UK. The community pharmacy, one of the most accessible healthcare settings in the UK, could provide one solution to improving participation. To prioritize factors that could influence delivery of, and people-participation in, community pharmacy-based diabetes prevention services, and to identify strategies to facilitate successful implementation. A mixed-methods, primary care-based study, comprising of two stages: 1- Prioritizing key influences of participation and delivery using a structured Nominal Group Technique with people with non-diabetic hyperglycemia, and other stakeholders; 2 - Identifying theory informed strategies to facilitate successful implementation using framework analysis. This involved mapping prioritized influences and qualitative data from the Nominal Group Technique onto the Behaviour Change Wheel theoretical framework. The study was conducted in February 2019, in Norfolk, UK and ethical approval obtained prior to research commencing. Fifteen participants (five people with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, nine community pharmacy and general practice staff and one commissioner) participated. Participants prioritized "awareness" and "service integration" as key factors likely to influence participation and "the provision of information about health consequences e.g., leaflets" and "action planning e.g. general practice referral of patients to prevention services" as key strategies to facilitate participation. "Training", "staffing levels" and "workload" were amongst the key factors prioritized as most likely to influence delivery. Strategies identified to facilitate implementation included "instructions of how to perform the behaviour e.g. standard operating procedures" and "reward e.g. funding". This research provides theory informed strategies needed to facilitate successful implementation of community pharmacy-based diabetes prevention services. The findings of this study should inform the design of future diabetes prevention services to ensure participation and sustainability. [Abstract copyright: © 2023 The Authors.

    ‘Like an unbridled horse that runs away with you’: a study of older and disabled people during the COVID-19 pandemic and their use of digital technologies

    This study explored the uses of digital technologies by older and disabled people who were social distancing and shielding during the early Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. The study considers the benefits, difficulties, and technical support needs of these groups of people during this time. Using a case study methodology, in-depth interviews were undertaken with 11 older and disabled people recruited from a local digital sup-port service, and their support workers. Five main themes were identified by the research team. These were: technology was a mixed blessing and caused frustration; technology use increased during lockdown; technology supported resilience and contributed to identity through ‘stimulation, knowledge and friendship’; technology needs to be accessible, and sup-port was required to facilitate technology use. Understanding these experiences will enable policymakers, commissioners, and providers to develop better and more responsive digital support for older and disabled people in the futur

    A two day symposium looking at new research, contemporary readings, and shifting perception of watery landscapes from ghost ponds to coastal erosion in the age of the Anthropocene. Through academic and public debate, this symposium promotes an exchange of knowledge across art, science, heritage, the environment and digital technology.  Close Look, Distant View is organized by Dr Jane Watt and Dr Susan Barnet (both School of Engineering, Arts, Science and Technology, University of Suffolk) in collaboration with Emma Roodhouse (Colchester and Ipswich Museums) and in partnership with The Hold Suffolk Archives. It coincides with the Landscape Rebels exhibition at Christchurch Mansion and Suffolk’s Green Story exhibition at The Hold, Ipswich. Day 1 is a symposium at The Hold, Suffolk Archives Ipswich with over 80 attendees and presentations from artists, established and emerging academics from California Institute of Technology, University of Southampton, Anglia Ruskin University and University of Suffolk. Day 2 is a Challenge Lab with an invited group of twenty participants including artists, photographers, architects, scientists, historians and sociologists exchanging knowledge within the landscape

    The relationship between kinaesthesia, motor performance, physical fitness and joint mobility in children living in Nigeria

    Abstract Purpose This study aimed to determine the relationship between kinaesthesia, motor performance, fitness, and joint mobility in children. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted involving children from two primary schools in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria. The Beighton criteria were used to measure joint mobility. Motor performance, fitness, and kinaesthesia were measured in all the children. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between the outcomes. Results A total of 91 children (51.6% girls) participated in the study. The mean age of the children was 8.20 ± 1.98 years. Using a Beighton score of ≥ 6, Generalized Joint Hypermobility (GJH) was identified in a total of 35 (38.46%) children and was more prevalent in females (60.0%). Joint mobility had significant correlations with most fitness and motor performance items, but not kinaesthesia. Agility & power, and motor performance seem to be reduced if mobility is larger. Kinaesthesia was correlated with most fitness and motor performance items, indicating that better fitness and better motor performance cooccur with better kinaesthesia or vice versa. Conclusion Joint mobility may have a significant influence on fitness and motor performance in children. Hence, it may be useful for future studies to investigate how fitness and motor performance modulate the onset and progression of musculoskeletal symptoms in GJH

    What might be an evidence base for coaching - ethical issues

    The ability to state with confidence that coaching is underpinned by a robust evidence-base is central to any claims that coaching is an effective and credible intervention. The type and quality of the research upon which our evidence is based is, vital to both the knowledge that informs the discipline and secure the future of coaching. Yet evidence is always partial and open to interpretation. Moreover, it serves an increasingly complex range of functions for an increasingly diverse range of stakeholders. These realities give rise to a variety of ethical issues. This chapter examines some of the ethical issues arising from attempting to grow the evidence-base of coaching. The chapter explores what is meant by evidence, the lack of synergy that can occur between research and practice and how any evidence sought will vary as a function of the underlying philosophical perspective adopted. The responsibilities of coaches as producers and consumers of knowledge are also considered with a framework for navigating the ethical complexities encountered in research provided. In exploring these issues the aim is to contribute new questions to help us consider what is needed for coaching to move confidently and ethically towards its claim of being an evidence-based profession
