Providing Information in Japanese Political Interviews
application/pdf論文(Article)This paper reveals that Japanese National Diet members including coalition parties’ members and opposition parties’ members, local level politicians, and nonpoliticians provide different type of information during televised political interviews. The study at the center of this paper indicates that different types of questions by interviewers result in different type of information from interviewees. In modern post-truth politics, it is crucial for politicians to provide information to the general public. In particular, it is important of decision-makers to transfer high-quality information to voters and other citizens. The results of this study show that coalition parties’ members and nonpoliticians tend to provide more technical information during political interviews. Additionally, interrogative-word questions, those that start with the words “what,” “why,” “who,” “when,” “where,” or “how” are most likely to elicit technical information from interviewees. The study suggests that broadcast political interviews can provide useful information for voters especially during election campaigns.departmental bulletin pape

A Relevance-Theoretic Approach to the Effective Use of Lexical Information,Visual Information, and English-Japanese Translation in Cross-Cultural Understanding
application/pdf論文(Article)The purpose of this research is to demonstrate to what degree lexical information, visual information, and English-Japanese translation contribute to the English learners’ understanding of cross-culture in the framework of Relevance Theory. We construct two types of questionnaire asking 38 English learners about their existing knowledge of “How pure maple syrup is made,” and about how much they understand its production process at the four stages. We conclude that lexical information, visual information, and English-Japanese translation make positive influences on learners’ cross-cultural understanding by satisfying the Communicative Principle of Relevance.departmental bulletin pape
A consideration of a maximal planar graph constructed from two same size trees
application/pdf論文(Article)For any integer n≧3, let G be the maximal planar graph with n vertices and m=3n−6 edges, and, T1 and T2 be any two trees with n−1 vertices and n−2 edges each other. If G contains T1 and T2 then we define the following subgraphs G′ and G″ of G as follows. Let G′ be a graph obtained by deleting edges of T1 and T2. Furthermore, let G″ be a graph obtained by deleting isolate vertices of G′. In this paper, we consider the problem to determine whether there is a maximal planar graph G such that T1 and T2 are contained in G and G″ is simple and connected subgraph with n−2 edges obtained from G, in the 3≦n≦7 case. As a conclusion, we can obtain that the answer of the problem is “yes”. In this paper, we discuss the detail of our consideration as the following ⑴ and ⑵. ⑴ If n=7, T1 and T2 are star type trees as table 3.8 described below, and G is the maximal planar with 7 vertices and 15 edges as table 4.6 described below, then G can not contain T1 and T2 in the same time. ⑵ Otherwise, G can contain T1 and T2, and G″ which is simple and connected subgraph with n−2 edges obtained from G.departmental bulletin pape

That-trace Effect Revisited
application/pdf論文(Article)This paper addresses cross-linguistic variation and diachronic change of complementizer-trace chain in the embedded clauses, deriving the distributional properties from interaction among empirically well-motivated constraints in Optimality Theory (OT) that we propose and their hierarchy. The constraints concern restriction on head, economy of representation, and semantic interpretation. In line with OT, the constraints are stratified according to the descriptions of grammatical structures. The interactions of the pivotal constraints determine the occurrence of (null-) complementizers. Furthermore, the constraint interactions and their different hierarchy can provide a unified account for the cross-linguistic variation concerning the occurrence of complementizer-trace chain and its diachronic change in the history of English.02876620departmental bulletin pape
