This research paper explores the influence of Eastern philosophy on Leo Tolstoy’s idea of perfection in his late period of work. The study is based on the assumption that the beginnings of this idea of Tolstoy are notions of the truth of life that can be perceived in the context of different cultural traditions. The main concepts of Eastern philosophy, with their emphasis on the inner perfection of man, had a significant influence on the Russian writer’s idea. Tolstoy studied Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Different, and sometimes even seemingly opposite points of view on certain aspects of human life in Tolstoy’s mind formed into a homogeneous concept of the way of a self-improving individual to personal and universal good or happiness. This concept is expressed in a certain way in the structure of the writer’s works of fiction.
„Vien tik dėkingumas...“: Plutarchas, Kavafis, Shakespeare’as ir Brodskis
This article examines Joseph Brodsky’s poem I Entered the Cage Instead of a Wild Beast… in the context of intertextual and cultural traditions spanning Plutarch, Shakespeare, and Constantine Cavafy. The focus lies on the theme of gratitude as it evolves from Plutarch’s Life of Antony, through Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, into Cavafy’s reinterpretations, and finally Brodsky’s autobiographical poetry. The study applies reception theory and intertextual analysis to highlight how Brodsky’s verse redefines the ancient theme of dignity in defeat as a modern affirmation of gratitude.
Since its release in 1940, John Ford’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath has sustained significant popular interest. However, the film adaptation has been more frequently analyzed for its thematic content than appreciated for its visual aesthetics, likely due to its connection with Ford’s established cinematic legacy and its alignment with the broader corpus of works addressing the socio-economic struggles of Depression-era America. The aim of this article is to critically examine the visual significance of the road and the archetypal myth of the highway in Ford’s interpretation of The Grapes of Wrath. The analysis begins by exploring the theme of the journey as represented in Steinbeck’s novel, and then narrowing the focus to the portrayal of this motif in Ford’s cinematic adaptation. Within the literary text, the journey serves as a metaphor for dispossession, whereas in the film, the motifs of the “road” and “travel” substantiate the film’s alignment with the road movie genre. Ultimately, this article argues that Steinbeck’s novel was instrumental in shaping Hollywood’s enduring fascination with the journey and the road, themes which would later be re-elaborated in the road movie, a cinematic reworking of the road narrative.
The article interprets Danish modernist writer Villy Sørensen’s short story “The Soldier’s Christmas Eve”, published in Harmless Tales in 1955, on the basis of Paul Ricœur’s hermeneutics of symbols, which is concerned with the problem of the constitution of consciousness. Sørensen’s notion of the Fall is understood as a fragmentation of the original unity and a transition from coherence to a state defined by discordance. In this sense, the poetics of the Fall is read as a configuration of the Ricœurian two-way hermeneutics: the archaeology of consciousness that unmasks symbols and the eschatology that reflects on them in a renewed way. The interpretation of the short story “The Soldier’s Christmas Eve” highlights several aspects of the hermeneutics of symbols which constitute consciousness: (1) the unmasking of consciousness by revealing the split in the psyche is irreversible, (2) the archaeology and eschatology of the subject are interrelated: they contradict each other, yet are mutually constitutive, (3) the conscious becomes true consciousness only by adopting the hermeneutical task: consciousness is the act of interpreting representations of meaning outside the conscious. In this regard, the short story presents the Fall as a crucial element in the development of consciousness. By interpreting the Fall, the story itself becomes a hermeneutics of symbols.
The protection of patients’ rights in the States of Latin America is rapidly emerging in the last decades both in legislation and in case law. In many court judgments originating from Latin America, patients’ rights are very closely tied with constitutional rights of citizens, such as the right to liberty, dignity, inviolability of the person, autonomy and privacy. In this article, the authors explore the relevant case law of the Supreme Court of Argentina, which handed down several influential judgments relating to patient autonomy, mainly relating to the patient’s self-determination, as well as a notorious 2015 judgment affirming the legitimacy of withdrawal of life-supporting treatment of a patient in a permanent vegetative state. The authors explore how the Court interprets the provisions of the Constitution of Argentina in relation to the protection of patient autonomy, as well as the application of the international standards of healthcare enshrined in international legal human rights covenants.
While Gandhi is portrayed as an inspiration for proponents of ecocentrism, specifically Deep Ecologists like Arne Naess, Ramachandra Guha suggests that Gandhi was more concerned with anthropocentrism. Rather than ascertaining whether Gandhi was a Deep Ecologist, this paper aims to determine the implications of his philosophical anthropology for the Anthropocene. Dwelling on Gandhi’s comprehension of the other, including non-human nature, we situate Gandhian environmentalism between ecocentrism and anthropocentrism as a weak form of anthropocentrism that can be interpreted as ‘stewardship’ with the potential for an ethic of care. The Gandhian ideals of Swadeshi, Swaraj, and Sarvodaya are invoked to discuss the significance and alignment of Gandhi’s philosophy of environment to contemporary ideals of ecologically and socially sustainable societies.
