„Baisiai nemėgstu rašyti laiškų!“: socialinis Vinco Mykolaičio-Putino portretas epistolikoje

    No full text
The article purports to introduce the social background of the famous Lithuanian poet Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, outlining his main social connections. Having surveyed the corpus of his correspondence, the author interprets the map of the social relationships maintained by the poet, attempting to establish the ways by which these letters could (and did) make impact on his literary creativity. The surveyed materials include egodocuments written from 1910 till 1967 and stored at the Lithuanian Archives of Literature and Art, Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum in Kaunas, the manuscript collection of the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore, and the Vilnius University Library. The considerable amount of letters could be classified according to certain criteria: the addressees (family members, relatives, colleagues, classmates, strangers, editors and translators) and contents (businesslike, aimed at maintaining the relationships, egocentric, esthetical). The types of the addressees also shape the structure of the article, since this study is oriented at social analysis rather than at a historical survey.Letters enabling to establish bidirectional relationships functioned at that time as the most common form of communication, as well as means of learning the news and gaining emotional support. V. Mykolaitis-Putinas rarely initiated the correspondence himself; however, he felt obliged to answer the letters that he received, at least those from his acquaintances. Among the most interesting letters are those written by the admirers who were usually unrelated to the poet. These people expressed their admiration of the poet’s work, suggested translating it, sent their own creative attempts, and sometimes also criticized (albeit rarely and mostly anonymously). Why did these people write this, especially bearing in mind that in the Soviet period, when many in the occupied Lithuania did not dare discuss certain topics in writing and were even afraid to talk about them with family members? Some letters were received from abroad, or from places of deportation, but these were mostly attempts to establish businesslike connections or to seek help. The problems described in the letters left their mark in V. Mykolaitis-Putinas’ introspection, as testified by his diary from the later period (1961–1967). However, the diary is more open and literary, and much more frequently engages with metaphysical problems than the letters.

The article explores the interplay between grotesque and gastropoetics in contemporary Lithuanian and Latvian literature, focusing on Latvian author Guntis Berelis’s short story “Es nekad nerunāju muļķības” (“I Have Never Talked Nonsense,” 2017) and Lithuanian author Ieva Dumbrytė’s novel Šaltienos bistro (Aspic Bistro, 2021). In both texts, grotesque imagery involving food, cannibalism, and bodily transformations plays a significant narrative role and encodes social and political critique. An identified subgenre of the grotesque—gastronomic grotesque (gastrogrotesque)—emerges as a previously unexplored niche of grotesque expression in the Baltic region. Drawing on Bakhtin’s metaphor of grotesque as transformation, it is argued that the symbolism of pig and meat in these texts embodies the extreme dehumanization of individuals, either in labor (Dumbrytė) or within political systems (Berelis). The grotesque serves its conventional function of overturning traditional literary aesthetic norms while also offering a shocking perspective on contemporary issues.Straipsnyje analizuojama grotesko ir gastropoetikos sąveika šiuolaikinėje lietuvių ir latvių literatūroje, daugiausia dėmesio skiriant latvių autoriaus Gunčio Berelio apsakymui „Es nekad nerunāju muļķības“ („Aš niekada nekalbėjau kvailysčių“, 2017) ir lietuvių autorės Ievos Dumbrytės romanui Šaltienos bistro (2021). Abiejuose tekstuose groteskiniai vaizdiniai, susiję su maistu, kanibalizmu ir kūno transformacijomis, atlieka svarbų naratyvinį vaidmenį ir koduoja socialinę bei politinę kritiką. Identifikuojamas grotesko porūšis – gastronominis groteskas (gastrogroteskas), kuris iki šiol Baltijos šalyse yra netyrinėta grotesko raiškos niša. Remiantis Bachtino pasiūlyta grotesko kaip virsmo metafora, teigiama, kad kiaulės ir mėsos simbolika šiuose tekstuose įkūnija kraštutinį žmogaus nužmoginimą, pasireiškiantį tiek darbo rinkoje (Dumbrytė), tiek politinėse sistemose (Berelis). Groteskas atlieka įprastinę funkciją ta prasme, kad apverčia tradicinius literatūrinius estetikos kanonus, o kartu suteikia šokiruojančią perspektyvą šiuolaikinėms aktualijoms

Lyginamieji literatūros tyrimai Violetos Kelertienės kritikoje

    No full text
The article examines Violeta Kelertas’s comparative research in the context of the Lithuanian diaspora in the United States. After WWII, comparative studies of Lithuanian literature on both sides of the Atlantic continued the tradition of comparative historical studies inherited from the interwar period and were developed as an addition to the history of national literature. However, Kelertas and some other diaspora literary critics methodologically renewed comparative literature more than their counterparts in Lithuania. The fundamental shift in comparative literature in the US—from the French tradition to postmodern comparative literature—was also influenced by its thematic, feminist, and postcolonial comparative studies, which enabled Lithuanian literature to raise new questions and introduce it into the global context of literary studies and connections with new thematic aspects. The article argues that comparative literature studies were carried on in the Lithuanian diaspora. In Kelertas’s case, comparative research in literature was modernized through feminist and postcolonial approaches.

In the Republic of Lithuania in 1918–1940 the Lithuanian political elite sought the dominance of the Lithuanian language in all areas of public life, including churches. There were also conflicts over the use of language in Catholic churches during services – in ethnically mixed parishes, disputes arose over which language should dominate during services. In Catholic parishes, there was a dispute over the use of Lithuanian and Polish languages in church services. The article examines the conflict regarding the use of Polish and Lithuanian languages during services in St. Trinity Church of Vandžiogala Catholic parish in 1918–1940, the congregation of which was absolutely dominated by Polish-speaking believers. It is said that the effort to Lithuanianize the service in Vandžiogala parish, where most of the parishioners spoke Polish, was the initiative of the ethnically Lithuanian local elite that formed in the local town. Acting from nationalistic motives and ignoring the ethnic composition of the parishioners, they sought to exclude the Polish language from services in the parish church and ensure the dominance of the Lithuanian language. This became the reason for the conflict in the parish between the Polish and Lithuanian believers. The political regime did not directly intervene in the resolution of the conflict, but indirectly supported Lithuanianization. The church and the clergy basically supported the aspiration to Lithuanianize the service in the parish church. All proponents of the Lithuanianization course were united by their attitude towards the Polish-speaking inhabitants of the parish – the latter were considered not Poles, but Polish-speaking Lithuanians whose ancestors were Polonized, so the real ethnic composition of the parish inhabitants was ignored and the effort to Lithuanianize them was justified.

On June 1, 1949, the Ministry for State Security of the Latvian SSR (LSSR MGB) initiated an investigation case, which within five months until October 29, 1949, grew into an accusation against fourteen persons for belonging to the “Theosophical anti-Soviet underground”. The members of the Latvian Roerich Society were accused and dissolved by the Soviet authority in 1940. However, they continued their activities illegally during the Nazi occupation and later the second Soviet occupation. MGB investigation paid special attention to the contacts of the “Theosophical anti-Soviet underground” outside Latvia, including the USA and Russia. However, especially close contacts since the 1930s united the followers of Nicholas Roerich’s ideas in Latvia with like-minded people in Lithuania. They continued their meetings and cooperation in the second half of the 1940s.This investigation case – almost simultaneously by similar charge the investigation against 18 persons happened in Lithuania – blaming prominent Latvian and Lithuanian intellectuals of distributing theosophical literature and of trying to preserve cultural values, was a vivid illustration of the Soviet regime policy to suppress any expressions of intellectual freedom. At the same time, this investigation case showed that the forms of society’s resistance to the repressive policy of authority were various, and among other forms and manifestations of resistance, there was another one: intellectual resistance. Its main specific features were following the broader, universal human values and, simultaneously, its ‘apoliticism’, not by choosing the “better” of the two occupying regimes, but by opposing the efforts of any political authority to restrict human freedoms and rights, and firstly – the freedom of thought. It is clear that at the level of whole nation, this intellectual resistance did not play a significant role – it was the resistance of an individual or narrow group of like-minded people, which can be partly explained as an “escape” from the existing political reality. However, judging by the sentences handed down by the court, this intellectual resistance in the eyes of the regime was not less dangerous as armed opposition.1949 m. birželio 1 d.

The article is dedicated to the comparative analysis of surnames of Lithuanian origin used in the Western part of Latvia, i.e. Kurzeme (including Kurzeme, Zemgale and Sēlija) and Eastern part of Latvia, i.e. Latgale, the history of which to a certain extent differs from other regions of Latvia. The giving of surnames in the regions of Latvia is different: in Kurzeme they were introduced in the first half of the 19th century. However, in Latgale surnames were introduced gradually, just as it happened in Lithuania and Poland. Nevertheless, a part of surnames in Kurzeme are older. Many of them are surnames of Lithuanian origin, because Lithuanians had apparently entered Kurzeme with surnames.Lithuanians are among the oldest and most traditional national minorities in Latvia. There were some small Lithuanian colonies in Southern and in Central Latgale. Ties with Lithuania are reflected in the surnames as well. Lithuanians have influenced both the local Latvian sub-dialects of Latgale and Kurzeme and the toponymic and anthroponymic system of these regions.Surnames of Lithuanian origin are classified into several semantic groups. Surnames motivated by names of occupations are considered to be very old. A significant number of Latvian surnames is of anthroponymic origin, usually they are derived from Christian first names. Surnames of flora and fauna semantics, as far as surnames motivated by words denoting human nature and behavior surnames form separate semantic groups. If we compare Lithuanian surnames in Kurzeme and Latgale, we can conclude that in Kurzeme there is a great variety of surnames and one surname has a small number of its owners, but in Latgale there are relatively fewer surnames of Lithuanian origin, but the number of their owners is much higher

Kaimo žmogaus paveikslas lietuvių literatūroje ir fotografijoje

The article reviews the image of a rural man in the Lithuanian literature and photography of the 20th century and contemporary times, explains how artistic images correlate with changes in the meaning and connotation of words designating a rural man. There is no doubt that the connotation of a person’s naming has one or another influence on his image in verbal and visual creation, and the paintings in turn support the different connotations of that naming. The village and a rural man have been depicted in Lithuanian literature since Kristijonas Donelaitis “Metai” (“Seasons”). The theme of rural aestheticization, making rural everyday life poetic, and the exaltation of the land and folk language comes from a romantic tradition. According to literary researchers, in the 19th century literature, the village was perceived as the only basis of Lithuanianness, and the rural man – as the equivalent of Lithuanianness. The village as a house of the spirit of the Lithuanian language is also raised in contemporary Lithuanian poetry and prose. It is no coincidence that the idea of Vaižgantas short story about the (in)ability to see and listen to the rich world of the rural human spirit “Akylasis būtų įspėjęs jame didžiulę inteligenciją, tik nebuvo kas įspėja” (A vigilant one would have noticed a great intelligence in it, only there was no one who could notice) can be seen in the novel by Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė “sielos šviesa, besismelkianti pro bukinantį skurdą ir nuovargį, – tokia menkutė, kad reikia mokytis ją atpažinti” (the light of the soul, seeping through the fading poverty and fatigue, is so small that one must learn to recognize it). In contemporary literature, quite a number of dark colours of the village and the rural man, sometimes obvious irony, ridicule are found. The texts of postmodern literature do not avoid depicting the village drastically, sarcastically, it is described by vulgar contemptuous neologisms (for example, “šūdkaimis” [shitty-village] by Aidas Jurašius). Thus, it can be stated that the depiction of the village and the rural man in contemporary Lithuanian literature corresponds to the diversifying connotation of the rural man in the current Lithuanian language and in the expression of other style texts.Rural photography in Lithuania has been for more than a hundred years; the rural photography of our country of the late 20th–early 21st century is also diverse. Some photographers, as typical of the Lithuanian photography tradition, refer more to the romanticization of rural man and rural life (e.g. Romualdas Rakauskas, Arūnas Baltėnas, Tadas Kazakevičius), others emphasize the diversity and polyphony of the village (brothers Mindaugas and Algimantas Černiauskai), and some photographers depict “the tired village”, the bottom of the village (Rimaldas Vikšraitis is especially prominent in this respect). The theme of saying farewell to agrarian culture, which has become entrenched in Lithuanian literature in the second half of the 20th century, is also being developed in photography (for example, a cycle “Tai, ko nebebus” (“What Will No Longer Be There”) by T. Kazakevičius). Photographers are resistant to spread of the negative, derogatory connotation of the rural man in the urban discourse, they rely on the cognition of the village, the feeling and reflection of its life, not on the stereotypes created by the urban culture
