Electoral Violence and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria

    Get PDF
This paper examines electoral violence and its implications for the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria. Having returned to democratic governance in 1999, Nigeria’s elections have been marred by violence, thereby underscoring the tenets of free and fair elections and democratic consolidation. This paper identifies the causes, dynamic manifestations, and implications of electoral violence adopting the political economy as its theoretical framework for analysis. The paper concludes that, electoral violence constitutes a serious threat to the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria; as it undermines the electoral process, weakens public confidence in democratic institutions, and perpetuates a cycle of instability and mistrust. It also concludes that; the consolidation of democracy requires a multi-faceted approach in order to strengthen the autonomy and capacity of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free and fair elections. Ultimately, the process to achieve democratic consolidation in Nigeria is a collective responsibility; where the political leaders, civil society, security agencies, and the entire populace must come together to reject violence and embrace the principles of democracy. It is only by ensuring that elections are deemed free, fair and peaceful that Nigeria can fully achieve the much-needed potential of democratic consolidation for its socio-economic development and national integration. Samples of groundwater from hand dug wells and boreholes in Ewekoro, Ogun State and its environs were collected and analysed for various physicochemical parameters and some metal ions such as lead, copper, iron, manganese and zinc. Also, an independent sample test of the wells and boreholes close to the Cement Factory around that area was carried out. The qualities of groundwater were determined by investigative study which involved the determination of some heavy metals and physicochemical properties in drinking water samples. Eight (8) samples of ground water were collected from the eight sampling sites. The samples were analysed for the following parameters; iron, copper, manganese, zinc, lead, color, dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), temperature, turbidity and total hardness using standard methods. The test results showed the variation of the investigated parameters in the samples as follows: temperature 26-31oC, pH 5.9-7.2, electrical conductivity (EC) 0.37 – 0.78 µS/cm, total hardness 181.8 – 333.0 mg/l, turbidity 0.00-0.05 FTU, colour 5-10 TCU, dissolved oxygen 4.31-5.01 mg/l, BOD 0.2-1.0 mg/l, COD 2.0 -4.0 mg/l, Cu 0.04 – 0.09 mg/l, Fe 0.006-0.122 mg/l, Zn 0.016-0.306 mg/l, Mn 0.01-0.05 mg/l and Pb < 0.001 mg/l. The concentrations of some of the investigated parameters in the drinking water samples from the research region were above the permissible limits of the World Health Organization standard for drinking water quality guidelines. The dissolved oxygen was found to exceed 5.0 mg/l which is the WHO permissible limit, Also Limestone was found to exceed the WHO maximum limit of 170 mg/l. All the above results confirmed the high pollution of the ground water sources and hence, they are not suitable for consumption without any prior treatment. Effect of Public Debt on Economic Growth in Nigeria with or without Domestic Investment

    Get PDF
The paper examines the effect of public debt on economic growth in Nigeria with or without domestic investment between 1981 and 2020 using a technique of Dynamic Least Square (DOLS). The findings of the study reveal that public debt in Nigeria retards economic growth through reduction in the level of investment. This indicates the possibility that the current levels of public debt in the Nigeria might not have been reducing the volume of growth but have the tendency to create a poorer macroeconomic and uncertain climate for investment. The implication is that the nonlinear relationship between debt and economic growth is a reality. It is suggested that there should be big push investment into all sectors of the economy that serve as engine of growth to the nation and whenever public debt is acquired, domestic investment must be given priority. ‘Maiduguri’ as Parable of Postcolonial Condition: Interrogating the Contexts of Patrick Oguejiofor’s Maiduguri Requiems

    Get PDF
In Patrick Oguejiofor’s collection of poems, Maiduguri Requiems, ‘maiduguri’ is metaphorised as a weird landscape noted for endless lamentations, especially over the horror of terror, instability and permissive tragedies of human disaster and disillusionments. The poems resonate a disruptive parable of postcolonial African encounters that invite critical attention. This work adopts a qualitative method of analysis in which the collection is read purposively and examined critically, relying on trauma theory and post colonialism as theoretical parameters. The selected entries are examined towards situating the connections between poetic imagination and socio-political and historical realities of a nation that has remained atomistic, ill at ease with itself and as citadel of terror, banditry and appalling contradictions. The analysis unravels ‘maiduguri’ beyond the assumed locale but as symptomatic of a nation that held great promise at independence but has continued to drift many decades after independence till deep into the 21th century, when others are growing at great speed on the scale of living standards and meaningful progress. The work concludes that the postcolony has remained too long at the brinks of human tragedy, and must exert as much energy as possible to brace up to the reality of postmodernity through systemic repair and reorientation in every ramification. Get PDF
Mental health problems are very rampant among women nowadays because of family stress and lack of adequate protection for women due to certain cultural and religious practices. Mental health problems encompass aggression, depression, suicide intention, loneliness and mental illness. Many studies have identified various socio-demographic factors as predictors of mental health of women but sufficient studies have not been cited to have been conducted in Ibadan. Therefore, this study investigated socio-demographic factors on mental health problems of women in Ibadan.  Descriptive research design of correlation type was adopted for the study and the purposive sampling technique was deployed to select 250 women who reported mental health issues of depression, and anxiety as a result of their marital relationships with average age of 40.7 years. A structured questionnaire on Mental Health Scale (r=0.78) was used to collect data from the respondent. Multiple regression and Pearson product moment were used for data analysis. The results show that there is joint contribution between the independent variables: age, marital duration, family type, and nature of marriage and the dependent variable (mental health of women) (F (4, 184) = 5.02; Adj R2 = 0.079; p < 0.05.001) and accounted for 8% of prediction and  in the relative contribution, family type (β = 0.168; t = 2.341; p < 0.05 made the most contribution to mental health problems  of women  followed by nature of marriage (β =0.214; t = 2.974; p < 0.05) while age (β = 0.057; t = 0.771; p > 0.05 and marital duration (β =0.092; t = 1.253; p > 0.05) did not contribute to mental health problems of women. It is recommended that stakeholders such as marriage counsellors, health workers and social workers and ministry of women affairs should push for more aggressive counselling on how to reduce mental health problem among women in our society.
