    Circularly Polarized Folded Reflectarray Antenna With Improved Aperture Efficiency

    This paper presents a method for improving the aperture efficiency of circularly polarized folded reflectarray (CPFRA) antennas. The reflection-phase distribution of the circular polarization selective surface (CPSS) constituting the CPFRA antenna is modified to maximize the aperture efficiency. CPFRA antennas designed with the proposed and conventional methods are simulated. Compared with the conventional CPFRA antenna with uniform CPSS reflection-phase distribution, the proposed one with the optimized non-uniform distribution has less spillover and higher aperture efficiency. The directivity and the corresponding aperture efficiency of the proposed CPFRA antenna are 28.7 dBic and 72.7% at 18.95 GHz, respectively. The CPFRA antennas designed with the proposed and conventional methods are fabricated and measured. Less spillover and higher gain are also observed in the measurement of the proposed CPFRA antenna

    Molecular Dynamics Simulations of High-Concentration Li[TFSA] Sulfone Solution: Effect of Easy Conformation Change of Sulfolane on Fast Diffusion of Li Ion

    The parameters of the polarizable force filed used for molecular dynamics simulations of Li diffusion in high-concentration lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (Li[TFSA]) sulfone (sulfolane, dimethylsulfone, ethylmethylsulfone and ethyl-ipropylsulfone) solutions were refined. The densities of the solutions obtained by molecular dynamics simulations reproduced well the experimental values. The calculated concentration, temperature and solvent dependencies of self-diffusion coefficients of ions and solvents in the mixtures well reproduce the experimentally observed dependencies. Ab initio calculations show that the intermolecular interactions between Li ion and four sulfones are not largely different. Conformational analyses show that sulfolane can change the conformation more easily owing to lower barrier height for pseudorotation compared to the rotational barrier heights of diethylsulfone and ethylmethylsulfone. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the easy conformation change of solvent affects the rotational relaxation of the solvent and the diffusion of Li ion in the mixture. The easy conformation change of sulfolane is one of the causes of faster diffusion of Li ion in the mixture of Li[TFSA] and sulfolane compared to the mixtures of smaller dimethylsulfone and ethylmethylsulfone

    Efficient synthesis strategy of near-zero volume change materials for all-solid-state batteries operable under minimal stack pressure

    All-solid-state batteries are promising for energy storage applications because of the high ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. Nevertheless, high stack pressure is required during operation to accommodate electrode volume changes and to maintain interfacial contact. Li8/7Ti2/7V4/7O2 (LTVO) has been reported as a dimensionally invariable high-capacity positive electrode material. While the synthesis of LTVO typically necessitates high-energy ball milling to produce nanosized particles with large surface areas, thereby mitigating the sluggish electrode kinetics inherent to disordered structures, this process is unsuitable for mass production. In this study, LTVO samples with different surface area are synthesized by tuning synthesis temperatures and post-milling treatment conditions and employing solution-based synthesis methods. The optimized sample (~20 m2 g–1) exhibits a large reversible capacity of ~250 mA h g–1, and can be synthesized using a scalable approach. Furthermore, the optimized LTVO enables stable operation of all-solid-state batteries under minimal stack pressure (<0.5 MPa)
