Land use transformation and sustainable spatial design lessons from a decade of regional development
Background: North Tapanuli Regency in North Sumatra has unique characteristics as a region located in the highlands and cool climate, with a dominant wilderness. North Tapanuli is divided into 15 sub-districts, with 11 urban villages and 241 villages. Each sub-district has its own duties, with the capital of the district being in Taruntung. The largest sub-district in North Tapanuli is Adiankoting and the smallest is Sipoholong. Methods: This study employed a qualitative method with a literature review. Findings: In addition to referring to normative regulations referring to the central government and the provincial government, the development of Tapanuli in the ten-year period, namely from 2014 to 2014 was boosted through breakthroughs with the Nikson model or innovation, knowledge, synergy, operation, and norm as a model in regional development planning based on precise data. In one decade, Nikson-style development has reportedly made North Tapanuli Regency a barn for agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. However, this development has changed the spatial layout and environmental quality of North Tapanuli. Conclusion: The North Tapanuli region is still dominated by wilderness. The past ten years have shown significant development, but with the consequence of environmental change. Novelty/Originality of this article: Over time, the population of North Tapanuli has also increased, resulting in land use changes and increased waste volume
Achieving sustainable construction through the integration of lean construction and ESG: A critical review
Background: With the expansion of construction sector, being environmentally responsible and sustainable has become crucial. Given its significant impact on carbon emissions and resource consumption, the industry is encouraged to adopt approaches that enhance efficiency while addressing environmental, social, and economic concerns. Methods: This study employed a systematic review and bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer software to qualitatively examine the alignment between Lean Construction and the ESG framework in the construction industry. Findings: Lean Construction (LC), closely aligned with Sustainability and the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework, offers a strategy focused on continuous improvement, waste reduction, and value creation. The integration of LC and ESG can accelerate the achievement of sustainability through waste reduction, resource efficiency, and improved worker welfare and better project governance. The objective of this study was to explore the trends associated with the alignment between these two methods in the world of construction and opportunities for further research development. Conclusion: This study conducted through systematic review and bibliometric analysis employing VOS viewer software for qualitative analysis. For future research opportunities there will be many related topics such as design or methodology, waste reduction, sustainable building, circular economy, lean tools and carbon footprint. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article lies in its integrated exploration of Lean Construction and the ESG framework through a systematic bibliometric analysis, offering new insights into their synergistic potential for advancing sustainability in the construction industry
Sustainable strategy of green open space in reducing stress levels in urban areas
Background: Cities around the world are facing increasing challenges related to high levels of stress in urban areas. One strategy that has been proposed to overcome this problem is the development of Green Open Space with a sustainable approach. This study aims to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of sustainable strategies for developing green open spaces in reducing stress levels in urban areas, with the City of East Jakarta. Methods: The systematic literature review involves searching for previous research that focuses on the relationship between green open spaces and mental health. Findings: The research results show that developing green open spaces with a sustainable approach can significantly reduce stress levels in urban areas. The people of East Jakarta indicate that the existence of green open spaces provides an effective escape from the stresses of daily life, as well as improving their overall quality of life. Improving the quality of green open spaces and sustainable development can create an environment that supports the mental and physical health of urban communities. Conclusion: Collaborating with community participation in the planning process, as well as continuing to conduct research to understand more deeply the positive impact of green open space on the welfare of urban communities so that a sustainable strategy for developing green open space can become a strong foundation for creating a city that is healthier and friendlier to stress levels and hopefully can make an important contribution to sustainable urban development efforts in terms of psychological well-being. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study highlights the significant role of sustainable green open space development in reducing urban stress levels, emphasizing community involvement and continuous research as key factors for fostering a healthier and more livable city
Optimizing public space design through odd-even policy: Reducing traffic congestion and pollution in DKI Jakarta
Background: The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta issued Governor Regulation No. 155 of 2018 and its amendments regarding Traffic Restrictions with the Odd-Even System. This regulation aims to reduce congestion levels on 16 main roads. By decreasing congestion, the expected outcome is a reduction in air pollution levels in DKI Jakarta. However, there is concern that the implementation of Governor Regulation No. 155 of 2018 might lead to an increase in conventional car purchases, as affluent individuals may buy two cars with odd and even license plates. This choice is driven by the continued use of fossil fuel-based energy. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Governor Regulation No. 155 of 2018 in reducing traffic congestion and air pollution in DKI Jakarta. Additionally, the study seeks to understand the relationship between the implementation of the odd-even traffic restriction system and electric vehicle sales. Methods: The research was conducted by analyzing secondary data obtained from government agencies and other institutions. Furthermore, a questionnaire survey was administered to individuals active on the 16 main roads where the odd-even policy is enforced. The study also analyzed the purchase levels of electric cars, which is one method for Jakarta residents to avoid fines on odd-even roads. Result: Based on the research findings, Governor Regulation No. 155 of 2018 and its amendments have not yet effectively reduced traffic congestion and air pollution in DKI Jakarta. Conclusion: The increase in electric car purchases potentially introduces new issues, such as the unsustainable management of nickel mines required for electric vehicle battery production. Therefore, other sustainable strategies are needed to address traffic congestion and air pollution. Novelty/Originality of the study: This study shows that Governor Regulation No. 155 of 2018 has yet to reduce congestion and air pollution in DKI Jakarta effectively. In addition, the increase in the purchase of electric cars as a solution to avoid fines has raised new problems related to the environmental impact of electric vehicle battery production
Analisa pola perkembangan wilayah kota Medan
The growth of the population and the development of the city are interrelated. Each increase in the population has an impact on the growth of the city, and vice versa. With the increasing population, the demand for settlement land also increases. Consequently, the availability of land becomes more limited and diminishes every year. Medan city is an example of a city experiencing rapid regional growth and development due to fast population growth, leading to an increase in land requirements. The author examines the regional development of Medan city, urban spatial planning approaches, and environmental issues faced by the city's growth. The author employs a qualitative approach and utilizes qualitative descriptive techniques based on literature research. The research results indicate that the residential area of Medan city has increased by 235.94%, rising from 84.56 km2 (1989) to 199.50 km2. The city's development pattern in 1989 was leap frog development, while in 2002, it showed concentric development. From 2007 to 2018, the Medan Marelan district experienced significant development, amounting to 491.06 hectares
The impact of urban density on the form and function of public spaces in sustainable city planning
Background: This study examines the impact of population growth on land use changes in North Jakarta. As one of the rapidly developing coastal areas, North Jakarta has undergone significant transformations in land use patterns due to urbanization pressures and the increasing demand for residential, industrial, and infrastructure space. Methods: Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) and previous literature studies, there was a substantial population increase from 2008 to 2018, accompanied by a dominant shift in land use from open spaces and agricultural land to built-up areas. Findings: Population growth has also led to intensive land conversion in strategic areas with direct access to key infrastructure, such as Tanjung Priok Port. Conclusion: This study suggests the implementation of more sustainable spatial planning to address environmental challenges and maintain the balance of the urban ecosystem. Novelty/Originality of This Study: This study provides a novel perspective by analyzing the spatial dynamics of land conversion in North Jakarta, highlighting the direct impact of population growth on strategic urban areas with key infrastructure access
Sustainable environmental governance as the implementation of state defense policy
Background: Land waters in urban areas often become a source of problems if they are not managed wisely and firmly. The threat and risk of danger, disease and even death always haunt the people who live on the banks of the river. Poverty and slum areas are negative effects of less than optimal land water management in urban areas. The Indonesian government has taken various steps to address this, but the lack of urban land for settlement is the reason why immigrants from other regions reside and reside in dangerous areas such as riverbanks. The compulsion to live minimally in urban areas is a burden for local governments in their efforts to increase welfare as well as improve sustainable urban governance. Many other cities in developed countries have made efforts to improve inland water areas to alleviate poverty and at the same time beautify the urban landscape. The experts agreed to hold discussions to formulate the best policy steps for sustainable urban governance in Indonesia. Methods: In the process of data analysis and decision making related to sustainable environmental governance as implementation of national defense policy, this article utilizes the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) Data Processing Method. Finding: The results of in-depth discussions and interviews with experts in the field of environment, urban governance, economic experts and poverty management experts from various institutions such as the Ministry of Social Affairs, PUPR Ministry, Spatial Planning and City Planning Services, Academics and also the Military were processed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Conclusion: The best decision alternative will be a recommendation for policy makers regarding sustainable urban governance. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study is relevant to the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) Method to formulate sustainable urban water management policies in Indonesia, involving various experts and related institutions to overcome poverty and improve urban landscapes. Therefore, this study can show policy recommendations based on various aspects and views
Berkumpul selama masa pandemi
Covid-19 has been present in Indonesia, including DKI Jakarta, for approximately 1 year. PSBB policies were implemented to reduce the increasing number of cases every day, supported by other policies. On June 5, 2020, the Jakarta provincial government issued the transitional PSBB policy, marking the beginning of the new normal era. Entertainment venues were gradually reopened by the government with the aim of restoring the economy. Many people went on vacations and gathered in private and public spaces around their residences despite the continued advice and dangers of the pandemic. The research methods used were participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies conducted from October to May 2021, with the policy dynamics ranging from transitional PSBB to Micro PPKM. The data collection took place on Pelangi Street, Pejaten, Jakarta, Indonesia, with informants selected as mothers residing on Pelangi Street. The mothers on Pelangi Street continued to engage in collective activities based on trust among fellow participants. Some activities they engaged in together included exercise, savings groups, and gatherings. These activities were carried out with the aim of boosting immunity and resistance to Covid-19. To protect themselves and comply with government regulations, they continued to wear masks as an effort to protect themselves from Covid-19, despite contravening government protocols and advisories to stay at home. In reality, gathering during the pandemic not only involves the lack of information or knowledge or even the indifference of the community, but it is highly complex, involving neighborly life and cognitive schemas
Learning pedestrian’s perspective towards sidewalk through new urbanism
In the 1990s, several urban and environmental designers discussed various issues related to suburban expansion, including income disparities, environmental degradation, and rampant use of motorized vehicles. The New Urbanism movement became known in the 1970s and 1980s in America. The principles of New Urbanism are clearly illustrated in the book Charter of the New Urbanism (Leccese & McCormick, 2000). The nature of being friendly to pedestrians is one form/pattern of the theory of New Urbanism. New Urbanism is also known as neotraditional design, transit-oriented development, and traditional or neighborhood development (TND). The analysis technique used for this goal is IPA (Important Performance Analysis). Before conducting the analysis process, it is necessary to test the validity and reliability and the Wilcoxon test of the variables used. The study focuses on the Tunjungan area in Surabaya City, an essential element of accessibility for trade and service areas. A pedestrian network is necessary for safe and comfortable mobility, as mandated by the Regulation of the Minister of Public Works. TOD nodes were created to connect public and private transportation and link neighborhoods and districts through corridors. These corridors are essential in developing New Urbanism theory, which recommends corridors with mixed land use patterns to create a compatible environment and protect public security, health, and safety. Community participation is necessary to develop regulations related to corridors
Evaluasi penerapan konsep forest city dalam pembangunan berkelanjutan lokasi calon ibu kota negara Indonesia
Jakarta being the nation’s capital, has led to significant environmental stress due to population density. The rise in inhabitants corresponds with the demand for residential land, urban infrastructure, and other auxiliary structures. The Indonesian government proposes the relocation of the State Capital as a remedy to address the issues and loads present in Jakarta and, more extensively, on Java Island. The fair allocation of funds for infrastructure development to boost economic growth outside Java Island is targeted at suitable locations, specifically in the North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara Regencies. The forest city concept is a strategy in urban planning and development that integrates with nature to safeguard forest regions and biodiversity. Striving for sustainable development necessitates consideration of social, economic, and environmental aspects in the urbanization process on Kalimantan Island. Urbanization issues to general environmental paradigms often arise in several regions, offering a unique viewpoint on the implementation of urban forests at the State Capital candidate location. The shift of service and government hubs is accompanied by population redistribution, with an estimated 1.5 million individuals expected to inhabit the proposed area. Social and environmental conflicts are prevalent issues of concern in the establishment of new cities. The objective of the evaluation is conducted through an analysis of the potential and challenges that will be encountered in relocating the State Capital from the socio-cultural aspect concerning cultural assimilation and environmental aspects related to the urban environment, which can induce an urban heat island. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach and method to identify potential and problems developed by the necessary strategies through SWOT analysis. The findings of this research offer recommendations that the government, as the decision-maker, must implement to preserve and sustain the potential of the environment and socio-cultural diversity
