Beyond Food Security: Understanding Access to Cultural Food for Urban Indigenous People in Winnipeg as Indigenous Food Sovereignty
Access to safe, affordable and nutritious food is an obstacle facing many Indigenous people in the inner city of Winnipeg, which is known for having vast food deserts. While food security is an urgent social, economic, cultural and health issue for Indigenous people in urban areas, and particularly those living in inner city areas, there are some unique elements of food security related to cultural values. Access to cultural food in urban communities is a challenge for Indigenous people. This paper discusses the results of some preliminary research conducted which explored the experiences and meanings associated with Indigenous cultural food for Indigenous people living in urban communities and the larger goals of what is being called “Indigenous Food Sovereignty” (IFS) with regards to cultural food specifically. When Indigenous people have the skills to practice IFS, a whole range of positive benefits to their social and economic well-being can unfold. Context-dependent conservation responses to emerging wildlife diseases
Emerging infectious diseases pose an important threat to wildlife. While established protocols exist for combating outbreaks of human and agricultural pathogens, appropriate management actions before, during, and after the invasion of wildlife pathogens have not been developed. We describe stage-specific goals and management actions that minimize disease impacts on wildlife, and the research required to implement them. Before pathogen arrival, reducing the probability of introduction through quarantine and trade restrictions is key because prevention is more cost effective than subsequent responses. On the invasion front, the main goals are limiting pathogen spread and preventing establishment. In locations experiencing an epidemic, management should focus on reducing transmission and disease, and promoting the development of resistance or tolerance. Finally, if pathogen and host populations reach a stable stage, then recovery of host populations in the face of new threats is paramount. Glycerophospholipid Profiles of Bats with White-Nose Syndrome
Pseudogymnoascus destructans is an ascomycetous fungus responsible for the disease dubbed white-nose syndrome (WNS) and massive mortalities of cave-dwelling bats. The fungus infects bat epidermal tissue, causing damage to integumentary cells and pilosebaceous units. Differences in epidermal lipid composition caused by P. destructans infection could have drastic consequences for a variety of physiological functions, including innate immune efficiency and water retention. While bat surface lipid and stratum corneum lipid composition have been described, the differences in epidermal lipid content between healthy tissue and P. destructans–infected tissue have not been documented. In this study, we analyzed the effect of wing damage from P. destructans infection on the epidermal polar lipid composition (glycerophospholipids [GPs] and sphingomyelin) of little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus). We hypothesized that infection would lead to lower levels of total lipid or higher oxidized lipid product proportions. Polar lipids from three damaged and three healthy wing samples were profiled by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. We found lower total broad lipid levels in damaged tissue, specifically etherlinked phospholipids, lysophospholipids, phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylethanolamine. Thirteen individual GP species from four broad GP classes were present in higher amounts in healthy tissue. Six unsaturated GP species were absent in damaged tissue. Our results confirm that P. destructans infection leads to altered lipid profiles. Indigenous Anglicans in Canada: A New Agape and the Path to Self-Determination
A thesis submitted to the United Centre for Theological Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Theology)The encounter between Indigenous peoples and settlers in North America is rife with challenges and missed opportunities, and marred by colonial domination, resulting in great harm to Indigenous people. The Anglican Church of Canada had a part to play, and now acknowledges that Indigenous spirituality and culture were overlooked and negated in missionary efforts, residential schools, and dominant church practices. The way forward involves looking backward to acknowledge the pain that the colonial Anglican Church imposed on the Indigenous peoples of Canada. In the past twenty years, there has been an effort to find ways forward in healing and reconciliation for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Anglicans. In this thesis, I will look at both internal and external factors and answer the question: “What are the barriers that are impeding self-determination of Indigenous Anglicans in the Anglican Church of Canada?”
I am an Anglican woman who loves the Church. I am Métis from Manitoba and part of the network of Indigenous people of this land. I was recently ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada into diaconal ministry. I believe that new opportunities for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Anglicans are possible as together we journey with a renewed sense of hope and faith. There is a cultural and spiritual renaissance happening within Indigenous communities and this impacts Indigenous Anglicans in their quest for self-determination within the Anglican Church. Throughout the world, there is a rapid process of decolonization taking place. As the world continues to shrink, and awareness of cultural is heightened, there is no longer any room for racism within Canadian society or within the Church. Christian roots evolved from a Judaic tribal culture and history. Christianity did not displace, but rather built on key theological concepts. Likewise, I believe that Indigenous Anglicans here in Canada have the same opportunity to evolve and discover their own place in the story of the Church. Resilience and a rich spirituality provided a strong foundation to live life in a good way. Indigenous Anglicans no longer have to compromise or apologize for honouring their traditional Indigenous values and sacred rituals while still embracing the Gospel. In this time in our history, all Anglicans have the opportunity to walk with Indigenous people. We have been invited to listen, learn, honour them and celebrate the recovery and restoration of right relationships. The work toward wholeness will continue to demolish barriers of gender, race, social class, and sins against each other. My hope is that self-determination will allow God’s peace to flow freely. I believe that God’s grace is leading the Church to a turning point in its history.Master of Arts in Theolog

Optical and radiometric models of the NOMAD instrument part I: the UVIS channel
The NOMAD instrument has been designed to best fulfil the science objectives of the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter mission that will be launched in 2016. The instrument is a combination of three channels that cover the UV, visible and IR spectral ranges and can perform solar occultation, nadir and limb observations. In this series of two papers, we
present the optical models representing the three channels of the instrument and use them to determine signal to noise levels for different observation modes and Martian conditions. In this first part, we focus on the UVIS channel, which will sound the Martian atmosphere using nadir and solar occultation viewing modes, covering the 200-650nm spectral range. High SNR levels (>1000) can easily be reached for wavelengths higher than 300nm both in solar occultation and nadir modes when considering binning.
