    Love and Sex in the Age of Capitalist Realism: On Spike Jonze’s Her

    Spike Jonze’s Her (2013) is a film about a romantic relationship between a man and an operating system. Using a Lacanian and Žižekian psychoanalytic framework, we interpret this film in the context of what the cultural theorist Mark Fisher has called “capitalist realism.” Referring to the Lacanian thesis that “there is no sexual relationship,” we discuss the film’s unique treatment of our enjoyment of digital technology and how it deals with the parallel deadlocks of the sexual relationship and the work relationship. We address these topics by looking at how Her deals with the sexual relationship, love, work, and fantasy. The premise of the film is original—suited to the zeitgeist of the digital present—and we claim that it reveals important insights about processes of subjectivization.Postprin

    A family of formulas with reversal of high avoidability index

    We present an infinite family of formulas with reversal whose avoidability index is bounded between 4 and 5, and we show that several members of the family have avoidability index 5. This family is particularly interesting due to its size and the simple structure of its members. For each k ∈ {4,5}, there are several previously known avoidable formulas (without reversal) of avoidability index k, but they are small in number and they all have rather complex structure.http://dx.doi.org/10.1142/S021819671750024

    Evolution of Occator Crater on (1) Ceres

    The dwarf planet Ceres (diameter 939 km) is the largest object in the main asteroid belt. Recent investigations suggest that Ceres is a thermally evolved, volatile-rich body with potential geological activity, a body which was never completely molten but possibly differentiated into a rocky core, an ice-rich mantle, and which may contain remnant internal liquid water. Thermal alteration and exogenic material infall contribute to producing a (dark) carbonaceous chondritic-like surface containing ammoniated phyllosilicates. Here we report imaging and spectroscopic analyses of Occator crater derived from the Framing Camera and the Visible and Infrared Spectrometer onboard Dawn. We found that the central bright spot (Cerealia Facula) of Occator is ∼30 Myr younger than the crater itself. The central spot is located in a central pit which contains a dome that is spectrally homogenous, exhibiting absorption features that are consistent with carbonates. Multiple radial fractures across the dome indicate an extrusive formation process. Our results lead us to conclude that the floor region was subject to past endogenic activity. Dome and bright material in its vicinity formed likely due to a long-lasting, periodic, or episodic ascent of bright material from a subsurface reservoir rich in carbonates. Originally triggered by an impact event, gases, possibly dissolved from a subsurface water/brine layer, enabled material rich in carbonates to ascend through fractures and be deposited onto the surface.The Framing Camera project is financially supported by the Max Planck Society and the German Space Agency (DLR).http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-3881/153/3/112/met

    For many decades now library practitioners have been generating a vast literature concerned with the “library of the future.” While much of this literature may be classified according to its imperatives for radical versus incremental change, what is largely absent from these articles is a theoretical understanding of the underlying ideological bases of their arguments, as well as extrinsic or transdisciplinary perspectives. Reconsidering these prescriptions for the future of the library through the lens of futures studies has the potential to afford us critical perspectives on their ideological foundations. Hal Niedzviecki’s 2015 book Trees on Mars: Our Obsession with the Future is analyzed to locate the ideological tensions in LIS literature between chasing the future on the one hand and cherishing the security of tradition on the other.https://cjal.ca/index.php/capal/article/view/2756

    The Truce–Smiles rearrangement and related reactions: a review

    post-printThe Truce–Smiles rearrangement is an X → C aryl migration reaction that is achieved by an intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution pathway. The reaction exhibits a wide substrate scope with respect to a migrating aryl ring and leaving group, appearing in many different tandem reaction sequences, to achieve a wide variety of product outcomes. We present an extensive survey of reported examples of the Truce–Smiles rearrangement from the chemistry literature (1950s until present) organized by various substrate design variables or aspects of the reaction method.     Tolerance to Hypercarbia Is Repeatable and Related to a Component of the Metabolic Phenotype in a Freshwater Fish

    Freshwater fish may be exposed to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) because of several actions, including anesthesia and high levels of aquatic respiration and potentially as the result of using high-CO2 plumes as a barrier to the movements of invasive fishes. Metabolic phenotype can potentially drive how freshwater fish respond to high CO2. We therefore quantified how tolerance (measured using time to equilibrium loss [ELT]) was driven by metabolic phenotype in a cosmopolitan freshwater fish species, Micropterus salmoides. ELT was repeatable, with 60% of the variance across trials attributable to individual differences. For each fish, standard metabolic rate and maximum metabolic rate were measured using respirometers and time to exhaustion after a chase test was recorded. Fish with high anaerobic performance were less tolerant to elevated CO2, potentially as a result of preexisting metabolic acidosis. Standard metabolic rate and aerobic scope did not predict ELT. Our findings define which fish may be more vulnerable to high CO2, a potential mechanism for this tolerance, and show that tolerance to high CO2 may be acted on by natural selection. Should freshwater ecosystems become elevated in CO2, by either natural means or anthropogenic means, it is possible that there is potential for heritable selection of CO2 tolerance, evidenced by the fact that ELT was found to be repeatable."The study was supported by Illinois Department of Natural Resources (CAFWS-93) and the US Geological Survey, through funds provided to C.D.S. by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (G14AC00119)."https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/69337

    Towards Fully Appropriate Public Education in Manitoba: A 75-Year Journey

    While students in Manitoba have been required to attend school for approximately 75 years, this has not always been the case for students with exceptionalities. It was at one point illegal to educate them in a public school in the province. If students with exceptionalities were in schools, placement was made in segregated facilities often located far away from their home communities. Over time, Manitoba introduced legislation to allow students with exceptionalities to attend public schools. This change required additional resources in the way of government funding to school divisions and a reconfiguration of staffing at both the provincial and school division levels. Increased parent advocacy, greater numbers of staff trained in service delivery for students, and shifts in the human rights movement saw increased numbers of students with exceptional needs attending schools. While students were included by law in the mainstream of education, in practice their involvement in school lacked authenticity. A province-wide review of supports and services and accompanying amendments to provincial legislation saw the introduction of programming changes to support students' participation in both academic and social components of their schools. A related document of standards was developed to assist school divisions in consistently applying elements of the amendments to the legislation. In years following, the province continued to address challenges of consistency and alignment in education for all students. This involved dilemmas around the implementation and ongoing usage of a provincial report card, challenges in programming due to an increase in the mandatory age for attendance at school, and struggles around province-wide acceptance of legislated amendments on human diversity. A provincial task force recommended a new, strengths-based funding model for students with exceptional needs. With a legacy of 75 years of gradual change for the inclusion of students in Manitoba schools, the province is poised to redefine success in this diverse learning environment. Discussions regarding success for all students, however, must occur within the context of the changing world. While traditional notions of success in the areas of academic achievement continue to be standard within this dialogue, elements such as equity, inclusion, sustainability, and, above all, well-being are recommended for additional and future consideration. Manitoba schools and school divisions have a solid foundation from which to learn and grow for the benefit of all students
