    Duck Populations and the Oil and Gas Industry in the Boreal Plains of Alberta

    The boreal forest of northern Alberta supports a large portion of North America’s breeding duck population in addition to being an area of importance to the petroleum industry. Breeding duck surveys in the Boreal Plains ecozone show several ground nesting species are in decline while cavity and over-water nesters are showing both positive and negative population trends since the 1970s. Industry has been identified as a limiting factor that may be influencing duck populations and species composition in the region, but there has been limited empirical research to test this assertion. The objectives of this research were to (1) assess the hypothesis that as aerial extent and activity associated with industry increases, breeding waterfowl populations will decrease over the same time period and (2) determine the best climate data aggregations when modelling industrial effects on duck populations. Mixed effects logistic regression models were used to analyse relationships between breeding duck pair counts and a combination of climate, environmental, landscape, and industry variables. Top models showed consistent results across nesting guilds, including a small, negative relationship between breeding pairs and cumulative areas of petroleum infrastructure, and a positive relationship between both cumulative infrastructure edge and industrial activity with breeding pairs. The impact of using different seasonal classifications for understanding relationships between breeding duck populations and industrial development was examined using no climate data (null), and annual, two, four, and five seasons. Predictions of duck densities across gradients of oil and gas infrastructure and activity were generated using models fit with different seasonal aggregations. Different seasonal aggregations showed similar patterns for relationships between industry variables and breeding duck density but the presence of industry variables in models did vary by seasonal classification.     A model for training undergraduate students in collaborative science

    Engagement of undergraduate students in research has been demonstrated to correlate with improved academic performance and retention. Research experience confers many benefits on participants, particularly foundational skills necessary for graduate school and careers in scientific disciplines. Undergraduate curricula often do not adequately develop collaborative skills that are becoming increasingly useful in many workplaces and research settings. Here, we describe a pilot program that engages undergraduates in research and incorporates learning objectives designed to develop and enhance collaborative techniques and skills in team science that are not typical outcomes of the undergraduate research experience. We conducted a collaborative science project that engaged faculty advisors and upper year undergraduates at four institutions and conducted a review to assess the program’s efficacy. Students developed a broad suite of competencies related to collaborative science, above and beyond the experience of completing individual projects. This model also affords distinct advantages to faculty advisors, including the capacity of the network to collect and synthesize data from different regions. The model for training students to conduct collaborative science at an early stage of their career is scalable and adaptable to a wide range of fields.     Unary patterns under permutations

    Thue characterized completely the avoidability of unary patterns. Adding function variables gives a general setting capturing avoidance of powers, avoidance of patterns with palindromes, avoidance of powers under coding, and other questions of recent interest. Unary patterns with permutations have been previously analysed only for lengths up to 3. Consider a pattern p=πi1(x)πir(x)p=\pi_{i_1}(x)\ldots \pi_{i_r}(x), with r4r\geq 4, xx a word variable over an alphabet Σ\Sigma and πij\pi_{i_j} function variables, to be replaced by morphic or antimorphic permutations of Σ\Sigma. If Σ3|\Sigma|\ge 3, we show the existence of an infinite word avoiding all pattern instances having x2|x|\geq 2. If Σ=3|\Sigma|=3 and all πij\pi_{i_j} are powers of a single morphic or antimorphic π\pi, the length restriction is removed. For the case when π\pi is morphic, the length dependency can be removed also for Σ=4|\Sigma|=4, but not for Σ=5|\Sigma|=5, as the pattern xπ2(x)π56(x)π33(x)x\pi^2(x)\pi^{56}(x)\pi^{33}(x) becomes unavoidable. Thus, in general, the restriction on xx cannot be removed, even for powers of morphic permutations. Moreover, we show that for every positive integer nn there exists NN and a pattern πi1(x)πin(x)\pi^{i_1}(x)\ldots \pi^{i_n}(x) which is unavoidable over all alphabets Σ\Sigma with at least NN letters and π\pi morphic or antimorphic permutation

Contemporary Art from the Arctic et Superimposition: Sculpture and Image, qui se sont déroulées à Saint-Boniface et à Winnipeg, au Manitoba en 2016-2017, nous soulignons la pertinence actuelle des notions d’expérience de la perception, de mosaïque et de village global de McLuhan. Après tout, quels liens novateurs s’établissent entre l’art, les nouveaux médias et la pensée, à partir de Marshall McLuhan aujourd’hui ?Nowadays, in our interconnected virtual world, how can we rethink Marshall McLuhan’s cultural heritage?     A Sympotic Self: Instruction through Inebriation in Anacreon

    As early as the fifth century, Anacreon was the poet of wine, love, and song; even his death—choking on a pip—is attributed to the grape. The fact that the symposion looms large in the extant fragments is, therefore, hardly surprising. In this article, I examine Anacreon’s sympotic verse and its moral quality. While the ethical character of Xenophanes’ and Theognis’ sympotic fragments has been acknowledged, most scholars consider Anacreon as a poet of love, rather than of moral instruction. Recently, Lear and Hobden have begun to address the moral and instructive character of Anacreon’s verse. I build on these analyses by examining the Anacreontic speaker’s presentation of moral value through his own person; there are 46 first-person statements in Anacreon, an important fact considering the narrative and psychological potency of “I” statements in early Greek lyric. In contrast to gnomic statements that purport to be generalized prescriptions, Anacreon’s performative “I” offers an alternative mode of moralizing delivery. These first persons, however, are not the same person: Anacreon gives a multitude of perspectives on appropriate sympotic behaviour. I read the Anacreontic speaker’s diverse and changing persona as a challenging and embodied moral perspective, which destabilizes the idea of a true self, and consequently denies the stereotyping of ancient poetic biography. By enunciating Anacreon’s songs, the speaker puts his own body and individuality into play in the “educative” space of the symposion.     The Influence of Soil Nitrogen Level on Tomato Defence against Whiteflies

    Whiteflies are one of the leading causes of tomato yield loss worldwide. Phloem feeders, including whiteflies, prefer foliage with high nitrogen (N) content because organic N is a limiting factor for herbivores. Since soil N is commonly insufficient for adequate crop growth, farmers supplement soils with N-containing fertilizers. While an adequate supply of N and other nutrients is necessary for growth and fruit production, by increasing the N content of the plant tissues, soil N supplementation could cause the plants to be less resistant to whiteflies. Therefore, there must be a level of fertilizer addition beyond which the losses in fruit production caused by greater attraction and feeding of pests exceed the gains brought about by N availability. In this study, we grew four commercial tomato varieties under three levels of soil N fertilization and infested half of these plants with whiteflies after eight weeks of growth. After 20 weeks of growth, we compared the yield and resource allocation in whitefly infected and uninfected plants to find whether soil N supplementation results in greater susceptibility of tomato plants to whitefly infestation and if so, to what extent; and to find whether some varieties of tomato are more resistant or tolerant to whiteflies. We observed no significant reduction in fruit production whereas the resistance increased significantly when the amount of N addition was reduced to half of the commercially recommended amount. The varieties differed in resistance and tolerance to whiteflies and a tradeoff between resistance and tolerance was also noted. Afamia was the most resistant and the least tolerant variety, while Conquistador was the least resistant and the most tolerant variety. Enhancing the natural defences of tomato varieties by lowering fertilizer application could improve the farmers’ economic benefits, thereby balancing the losses in yield due to lower fertilizer application. Decreased use of fertilizers and pesticides can also reduce social and environmental costs of largescale use of agricultural chemicals.Master of Science in Biolog
