    Hydrological and catchment controls on event-scale dissolved organic carbon dynamics in boreal headwater streams

    Accepted version of manuscript.Hydrological events transport large proportions of annual or seasonal dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loads from catchments to streams. The timing, magnitude and intensity of these events are very sensitive to changes in temperature and precipitation patterns, particularly across the boreal region where snowpacks are declining and summer droughts are increasing. It is important to understand how landscape characteristics modulate event-scale DOC dynamics in order to scale up predictions from sites across regions, and to understand how climatic changes will influence DOC dynamics across the boreal forest. The goal of this study was to assess variability in DOC concentrations in boreal headwater streams across catchments with varying physiographic characteristics (e.g. size, proportion of wetland) during a range of hydrological events (e.g. spring snowmelt, summer/fall storm events). From 2016 to 2017, continuous discharge and sub-daily chemistry grab samples were collected from three adjacent study catchments located at the International Institute for Sustainable Development – Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario, Canada. Catchment differences were more apparent in summer and fall events and less apparent during early spring melt events. Hysteresis analysis suggested that DOC sources were proximal to the stream for all events at a catchment dominated by a large wetland near the outlet, but distal from the stream at the catchments that lacked significant wetland coverage during the summer and fall. Wetland coverage also influenced responses of DOC export to antecedent moisture; at the wetland-dominated catchment, there were consistent negative relationships between DOC concentrations and antecedent moisture, while at the catchments without large wetlands, the relationships were positive or not significant. These results emphasize the utility of sub-daily sampling for inferring catchment DOC transport processes, and the importance of considering catchment-specific factors when predicting event-scale DOC behaviour.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hyp.14279?af=

In this session, we will consider the ethical responsibilities of the research team when participating in community-based research projects. You’ll see the big picture of the ethics requirements in research in Canada linked to Universities and communities.     Community-based participatory research begins with relationships. The role of the researcher in the initial stages of the research relationship is to listen. Although it might not always be framed as research, community organizations and activists typically have questions they seek to answer, policies they believe to not working, or social concerns they believe need to be examined. An important role of the researcher is to work with community partners to design a research project that gets to what they seek to learn in a way that makes best sense to them.     Endangered Oarisma poweshiek butterfly larval foraging and adult habitat interactions in Manitoba, Canada

    This research was conducted on Treaty 1 territory, the ancestral home of Anishinaabe, Cree and Métis peoples and current home of diverse First Nations, Métis, Inuit and other Indigenous cultures. Thank you to members of the Manitoba Tall Grass Prairie Preserve Management Committee, for developing permits to conduct research.The Poweshiek skipperling (Oarisma poweshiek) is endemic to the tall grass prairie in North America, and is now critically endangered globally. Existing populations are scattered amongst tall grass prairie remnants. However, the host food plants eaten by Poweshiek skipperling larvae, the vegetative and microclimatic descriptions of immature and adult microhabitats as well as O. poweshiek behaviour in Manitoba are unknown. I observed the foraging behaviour of larval O. poweshiek in natural habitat to determine the plant species that they consume and document their development. I also followed adults in prairie patches to identify locations in which various activities, such as egg laying or nectar feeding, were facilitated by the habitat. I measured vegetative, structural and microclimatic attributes of microhabitats to determine potential characteristics which facilitate various adult activities and larval development. Larvae appeared to navigate microhabitats to locate host food plant species, alternating between shoots of various species throughout their development. Adults flew almost exclusively in the prairie plant community, rarely flew in shrub or ephemeral wetland communities and were never observed flying in wetland or forest communities. Adult activities appeared to be distributed along a soil moisture gradient, with egg laying associated with the mesic section of the moisture gradient, resting and/or basking associated with the drier section and nectar feeding generally associated with sections throughout the moisture gradient. My research contributes knowledge about larval O. poweshiek foraging and adult habitat interactions in prairies in Manitoba, Canada. Discoveries from my research may guide habitat stewardship to ensure that high quality habitat is available for every life stage and inform reintroduction activities to ensure potential release locations contain required habitat features. Novel descriptions of locations which facilitate larval development and various adult activities may inform provincial and federal recovery strategies to increase the chances of O. poweshiek’s survival. My findings may also initiate further research about the Poweshiek skippering and possibly guide the strategies to recover other Lepidopterans-at-risk.     Magnetic diffusion, inductive shielding, and the Laplace transform

    In the quasistatic limit, a time-varying magnetic field inside a conductor is governed by the diffusion equation. Despite the occurrence of this scenario in many popular physics demonstrations, the concept of magnetic diffusion appears not to have garnered much attention itself as a subject for teaching. We employ the model of a thin conducting tube in a time-varying axial field to introduce magnetic diffusion and connect it to the related phenomenon of inductive shielding. We describe a very simple apparatus utilizing a wide-band Hall-effect sensor to measure these effects with a variety of samples. Quantitative results for diffusion time constants and shielding cutoff frequencies are consistent with a single, sample-specific parameter given by the product of the tube radius, thickness, and electrical conductivity.     A User-Centric Case for Rights Reversions and Other Mitigations: The Cultural Capital Project Submission to ISED Consultation on Term Extension

    Term extension is unlikely to benefit any but the largest of rightsholders, and indeed, in general independent creators typically do not benefit greatly from the promised financial exploitation promised by copyrights. This has been made even more evident by the COVID pandemic - while copyrighted works are consumed more than ever, independent creators have sunk further into poverty. We propose mitigation strategies for term extension that would help the people who are creating Canada’s cultural landscape, as well as additional actions that would alleviate additional current copyright losses.SSHR

    Accessing Medical Assistance in Death (MAiD): An interpretative phenomenological analysis of experiences with MAiD by family members and providers in Manitoba

    This research explored first-hand experiences with medical assistance in death (MAiD) in Manitoba. It aimed to uncover what experiences revealed about the process behind this new end-of-life option in Canada. Specifically, the research aimed to reveal positive and negative aspects of the MAiD process in Manitoba, from which recommendations can be extracted. To accomplish this, semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with eleven family members (who assisted with the MAiD process) as well as six members of the MAiD team (physicians, nurses, and a social worker). Interviews inquired into participant experiences with the MAiD process and legislation. Interviews were subsequently transcribed (anonymously) and manually analyzed for common themes among participants. Two major themes with subthemes were identified from participant responses. The first theme concentrates on the lack of MAiD awareness and understanding of MAiD requirements among the public and medical professionals. This lack of awareness stems from the absence of standardized education for medical professionals which in turn impedes access to MAiD for patients. The second theme discusses how moral objections (by loved ones, healthcare workers, or abstaining institutions) have also impacted the process. Notably, faith-based facilities (which prohibit MAiD), require patients to transfer elsewhere in order to access MAiD, which at times delays access or in some cases prevents it altogether. Transfers from abstaining facilities were described by participants as a drain on resources, morally distressing, and onerous for patients, sometimes ending unfavourably for them or preventing access to MAiD altogether. These findings call for better information dissemination about MAiD and most importantly, standardized education or professional development for healthcare providers. Greater public awareness of MAiD and its regulations is needed to ensure equitable access to this service, especially in rural areas. Finally, abstaining policies must be re-examined in order to alleviate transfer burdens for patients as well as healthcare providers and families.     Antimicrobial and Chemical Studies on a Medicinally important Plant: Curcuma longa

    This thesis describes phytochemical studies on the methanolic extract of Curcuma longa; a medicinally important plant used as indigenous medicine for the treatment of wounds in South Asian and African countries. The crude extract displayed antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, but was inactive against Gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus agalactiae. This extract also did not show antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Based on the observed antibacterial activity, it was decided to carry out phytochemical investigation of crude methanolic extract of C. longa to isolate and characterize natural products and evaluate them for antimicrobial activity. These efforts resulted in the identification of three known natural products: curcumin (39) sclareolide (40) and atalantoflavone (41). Structures of these compounds were established with the aid of NMR spectroscopic studies. Compounds (40) and (41) have been isolated for the first time from this plant. Compounds (39-41) were found to be inactive against the Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli.Master of Science in Bioscience, Technology and Public Polic
