The Performance of Male Subjectivity in The Matrix Trilogy
The trilogy of The Matrix essentially speaks of, indeed demands, the constitution, development and stabilization of a male subject. [...] In the figure of Neo as the Chosen One the trilogy permanently reproduces a consistent concept of active masculinity in the form of male heroism by means of the formal principle of recursive (presup)position as an ongoing process. That this male subjectivity is a performance is one of the trilogy\u27s most essential, constitutive messages, which the films never acknowledge openly but keep producing on a formal level. [...] At first glance, the films thus seem to represent a stabilizing trend of the Hollywood cinema dispositif. At the same time, however, the trilogy is perilously situated on the brink of an abyss when the production process of this masculinity exposes its own constitutive dependence on a femininity whose visible and representative manifestation could hardly be more energetic, nimble and clever. Thus, the trilogy of The Matrix figures as the prototype of contemporary manifestations of a dispositif that seeks to (re)consolidate the severely shaken status of male heroism by employing strategically its whole array of technological possibilities
Planspiel „De-/Kategorisierung in Feststellungsverfahren sonderpädagogischen Förderbedarfs“: Konzept, Lehrmaterial und Evaluationsergebnisse
Der Artikel stellt das Planspiel „De-/Kategorisierung im Feststellungsverfahren sonderpädagogischen Förderbedarfs“ als Lehr-/Lernmethode für die Lehrkräftebildung inkl. Materialien und Evaluationsergebnissen vor. Die Teilnehmenden handeln auf Basis rollenspezifischer Positionen aus, ob in einem simulierten Fall ein SPF attestiert werden soll. Durch die im Planspiel angelegte multiperspektivische Reflexion pädagogischer Entscheidungen soll ein Beitrag zur Professionalisierung für Inklusion geleistet werden.
This paper presents the simulation game ‘De-/Categorisation in the assessment procedure for special educational needs’ as a teaching/learning method for teacher training, including teaching materials and evaluation results. Participants engage in role-specific negotiations regarding the assessment of special educational needs in a simulated case. Das Fach Gesellschaftslehre aus Akteur*innensicht: Eine qualitative Studie zu Chancen und Herausforderungen der gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Fächerintegration an Gesamtschulen in NRW
Der vorliegende Beitrag nimmt das Fach GL und die damit verbundenen Chancen und Herausforderungen einer gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Fächerintegration an den Gesamtschulen in NRW in den Blick. Dafür wurden Professor*innen und Lehrkräfte interviewt. Als Hauptergebnis wurde ein Modell erstellt und ein Handlungsbedarf auf verschiedenen Ebenen erkannt, welcher notwendig erscheint, um den Status quo und die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen zu überwinden und die Potentiale des Faches entfalten zu können.
This article focuses on the subject of GL (German: Gesellschaftslehre, rough translation; social sciences; i.e. a school subject that includes geography, history, politics and economics) and the opportunities and challenges of integrating social science subjects in comprehensive schools in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. University professors and teachers were interviewed for this purpose. The main outcome was the creation of a model which identified a need for action on various levels. This is deemed necessary to overcome the current status quo and its related challenges and to unlock the potential of the subject.The present article focuses on the subject of GL and the associated opportunities and challenges of integrating social science subjects in comprehensive schools in NRW. Mehrsprachige Kinder im Unterricht sichtbar machen : Unterrichtsideen zum lernförderlichen Nutzen der Familiensprachen für alle Kinder
Ziel des Beitrags ist es, ein breites Spektrum an didaktischen Zielen und methodischen Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen, die es ermöglichen, die Familiensprachen von Grundschulkindern lernförderlich für alle Kinder im Unterricht zu berücksichtigen. Ausgangspunkt sind die didaktischen Funktionen zum lernförderlichen Einbezug von Mehrsprachigkeit als theoretisches Ergebnis der DFG-geförderten BLUME-Studie zu den Überzeugungen von Grundschullehrkräften. Davon ausgehend werden konkrete Unterrichtsideen beschrieben, um die jeweiligen didaktischen Ziele mit entsprechenden Methoden erreichbar zu machen.
The aim of this article is to present a broad spectrum of didactical objectives and methodological implementation options for incorporating the family languages of primary school children into the classroom in a way that is conducive to learning for all children. The starting point are the didactical functions for the inclusion of multilingualism to promote learning as a theoretical result of the BLUME study (funded by the German Research Foundation) on the beliefs of primary school teachers. Based on this, concrete teaching ideas are described, detailing how and with which methods the respective didactical goals can be achieved.The aim of this article is to present a broad spectrum of didactic objectives and methodological implementation options for incorporating the family languages of primary school children into the classroom in a way that is conducive to learning for all children. An Encounter in Paris – Conversations on Clitoridectomy across Borders
This essay describes how a controversy over clitoridectomy came to influence the conjuncture of imperial politics and nationalist resistance between Kenya and Great Britain the 1930s. Clitoridectomy was a key component of the initiation rites of leading population groups in Kenya. Missionaries and medical doctors opposed it on moral and health grounds, African men and some women defended it a precondition of mature and responsible adulthood. An unlikely meeting and collaboration between a group of people - Marie Bonaparte, Jomo Kenyatta, Bronislaw Malinowski and Prince Peter - who had a keen interest in the issue, generated new insights into the roots of tradition, how it fitted into not only structures of the human psyche but also the social structure of so-called traditional societies. The essay discusses what led to the collaboration, traces its consequences and situates the clitoridectomy controversy in the context of anti-colonial and female emancipation

For a long time the relationship between gender and disability has been viewed in a subtractive or additive fashion, often pointing to the emasculation of men or double discrimination against women, often limiting itself to binaries. The portrayal of disability annihilating gender and exacerbating systems of oppression can be found in mainstream media and disciplinary scholarship alike. While identity is commonly explored through the axes of race, class, and gender, this issue of Gender Forum chimes in with arguments that have been put forward to include the category of the body or more explicitly disability. Be it Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s assertion of ‘feminist disability studies’ or Tom Shakespeare’s, Russell Shuttleworth’s, and Thomas Gerschick’s work on ‘disabled masculinities,’ or approaches within Queer Studies by Rober McRuer or Mark Sherry, the shared objective is to catalyze a negotiation of the interlocking of identity markers in subject formation and the resulting particularities of oppression that permeate all of these discourses. In tackling these questions, conceptualizations of bodily difference similarly move to address the construction of normalcy, heteropatriarchy, and privilege
Review: Lori Merish, Archives of Labor: Working-Class Women and Literary Culture in the Antebellum United States

Lori Merish, in Archives of Labor, examines the robust literary culture of working-class women in the antebellum United States and succeeds in uncovering the complexities of the female experience that defined the various occupations in which women participated. Merish examines popular fiction, factory pamphlets, and dime novels in order to unpack the public perception of the female worker and in doing so, ascribes agency to working-class women employed as mill girls, seamstresses, missionary workers, and domestic servants. Merish also refracts the working class occupations through the lens of race by exploring the shifting public perception regarding the domestic servant as conveyed through popular contemporary novels. Historiographical trends tend to highlight gender roles and social expectations by evaluating the means in which working-class women push the boundaries of a traditionally patriarchal society in order to be economically or socially independent. Consequently, scholarship often collapses a variety of occupations into one seamless ‘working class’ experience. Merish’s work, on the other hand, addresses the complex composition of the working class and conveys the plurality of female occupations by analyzing them in separate chapters with distinct literary tracts. She succeeds in weaving together literary and historical analysis and produces a thorough and engaging text on antebellum working-class women

When I moved to Miami, Florida in 2008 as an eager anti-rape activist and academic-in-training, I was confronted by the “scene under the Julia Tuttle Causeway” that Roger Lancaster documents in his contribution to David M. Halperin and Trevor Hoppe’s necessary 2017 edited collection The War on Sex (Duke University Press, 92). Due to the now iconic 1,000 feet laws which still prohibit “all sex offenders from living within a thousand feet” from places “where children gather,” there was a “small camp of sex offenders [who] took up residency under the Miami bridge” (ibid.). What made this cohabitation even stranger was that the Miami authorities “charged with monitoring sex offenders allowed” the illegal squatting, “because they could find no other place for the men to live” (92-93). By 2009, “the camp had swelled to as many as 140 squatters” (92). This compelling, confusing scene of abjection was essential to forming my abolitionist politics and reorienting the way I thought and spoke out against sexual violence, sexual offence laws, and the carceral state
Sia’s Strained Girl: Performing Persistence in Neoliberal Environments
Australian singer-songwriter Sia (Kate Isobelle Furler) has become known as much for hit songs such as “Elastic Heart” and “Chandelier,” as for unusual claims to anonymity and privacy: Sia performs with her face covered by an oversized wig topped with a big ribbon or a hat, while child-dancer Maddie Ziegler takes the spotlight. Sia discussed her avoidance of visibility as an attempt to preserve a sense of privacy and freedom that celebrity culture does not usually afford stars. Ziegler has become the face and body of Sia’s videos and concerts, sometimes accompanied by other child actors. In Sia’s videos, the girl signifies multiply. She not only catalyzes the artist’s larger preoccupation with consumption and sacrifice in celebrity culture, but performs the entrapment, vulnerability, and will for a livable life of a neoliberal youth subsumed to the logic of self-investment (Wendy Brown). This article analyzes how the girl, usually a figure of preoccupation, hope, and worthy investment (Angela McRobbie, Anita Harris), appears as one of strained persistence who defies both concern and hope, while, instead, spurring questions about the affective modalities available to young women in the age of increased neoliberal precarity
