Heinrich Böll – „Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum“

    Get PDF
This article is dedicated to the media agitation depicted in Heinrich Böll\u27s story “The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum” and the influence it has on the protagonist\u27s criminal responsibility. The role of the tabloid newspaper as a trigger for social exclusion and psychological pressure on Katharina Blum is analysed, also considering the work\u27s history of origin. Criminological theories are used to explain the mechanisms that lead to the escalation of violence and ultimately to the killing of the journalist Tötges. This is followed by an assessment of the crime in terms of criminal law, considering Katharina Blum\u27s decision to commit the crime, possible justifications and excuses as well as the legal classification of the killing

    Suzie Miller – „Prima Facie“

    Get PDF
This article examines Suzie Miller’s play Prima Facie with a focus on the criminal prosecution of sexual violence within a patriarchal legal system. The protagonist, criminal defense lawyer Tessa, becomes a victim herself and finds that the justice system fails her. The piece ex- plores how patriarchal norms obstruct truth-seeking and lead to secondary victimization. The analysis also draws parallels to the German legal context, especially regard- ing evidentiary challenges and argues for a gender-sensitive legal approach

Narratives about the future are not only concerned with the imagination of technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence or transhumanist ideas, but also with reflecting socio-ecological complexity, ethical challenges of the future, and the question of desirable futures. This is particularly relevant in light of young people’s insecurities as well as the current educational focus on dystopian narratives in literature and leads to the question of how learning situations can be designed that focus on imagining more positive futures. This article presents the concept of a Future Fiction Makerspace, which took place at the University of Cologne as part of the teff Academy (Teacher Education for a Future in Flux). The innovative format of the Future Fiction Makerspace aims to strengthen collaboration with teachers and schools as well as researchers in the context of the wider teff community for the further development of educational tool kits and their eventual integration into specific educational systems within different teff institutions in Europe. In addition to presenting our concept, which links all three phases of teacher training, we emphasise the importance and potential of cooperation of all participants. We aim to outline the co-creative development of our findings relating to transformative, inclusive, digital and culturally sensitive research, also with regard to its innovative potential for future-oriented teacher training

Kommunikative Rationalität für Statistical Literacy: Ein Framework zur Analyse der Kommunikation von Lernenden über datenbasierte Argumentationen

    No full text
Whereas data literacy focuses on an individual’s ability to utilize data, statistical literacy focuses on two interlocutor’s ability to interpret and communicate about data-based arguments. The communicative component of statistical literacy, however, remains underdeveloped in research discourse. This contribution illustrates a framework for the communicative component by adapting Habermas’ rationality constructs. The results of an empirical study show that the framework allows deep insights into students’ statistical literacy. This also allows a clearer specification of the relation between data literacy and statistical literacy

    Understanding significance tests (simulation-based)

Data literacy also includes skills for interpreting data, for example with the help of significance tests. However, there are many misconceptions about the meaning of significance tests. As part of a course for gifted students, inferential statistical methods were taught (simulation-based with R). The post-test shows: While the students can qualitatively assess after the workshop what it means when the p-value falls below the significance level, many are still subject to the so-called relevance fallacy. Finally, suggestions for the further development of the workshop are presented

    No full text
This paper uses qualitative content analysis to develop a category system that systematically records the formulations of conditional probabilities from a linguistic perspective. A subsequent category-based text analysis of task texts from current textbooks reveals that the range of formulations used differs between the textbooks. In addition, linguistic expressions of N=77 high school graduates are examined with regard to typical errors in conditional probabilities. Implications for research and practice are discussed

    No full text
Within Latin American visual arts, the name Teodoro Ramos Blanco remains largely unknown, despite being one of the most significant sculptors of Cuba\u27s Republican period. This is unsurprising given the systematic exclusion of Afrodescendant artists from the hemisphere\u27s art histories. Ramos Blanco created the sculptures for iconic public works in Cuba and Haiti, he exhibited throughout the region, and trained generations of artists and advanced the nation’s cultural life through his work with the Círculo de Bellas Artes (CBA) and the National Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro. This article highlights an unexplored dimension, not only of his pioneering work but also of the region\u27s art histories. It traces the origins of conceptualizations of Afrodescendant visual arts envisioned by Afro-Latin American artists. Beyond his pioneering output and his pedagogical and administrative contributions, Ramos Blanco stands out for his exceptional writings on race and the arts, where he conceptualized what he called the black form in the 1930s. His framework was explicitly diasporic and antiracist, sculpting the Afrodescendant character as a resilient and transformative force. This article weaves together his biography, his work, and his conception of the black form, broadening the coordinates of thought and action of Afro-Latin American artists while illuminating the legacy of this sculptor.Within Latin American visual arts, the name Teodoro Ramos Blanco remains largely unknown, despite being one of the most significant sculptors of Cuba\u27s Republican period.

Feminist Interventions and Intercultural Mobilities in Satoshi Miyagi’s ‘Othello in Noh Style’

    No full text
I shall examine the ways in which moving the excluded female body onto the Noh stage in this production constitutes a materialist feminist intervention both into the ‘form’ of historically all-male Noh performance, and into the ‘focalisation’ of Shakespeare’s narrative, providing a specifically female articulation of the memory and experience of trauma. Desdemona’s memory of the past becomes the dramatic plot of Othello re-constructed, to enact a new subject position: Desdemona’s ghost. This material intervention facilitates temporal and spatial mobilities unique to intercultural performance, opening possibilities for theorising at the intersection of interculturalism and gender. Noh is a classical Japanese performance form from the 14th century. However, Noh performance only allowed male actors, so there emerges a disjunction between female character-types, and codified performances that did not involve the actual participation of female actors. Consequently, feminine identity and subjectivity is rendered always performative, an effect of the citation and repetition of formal aesthetic codes. Casting actresses intervenes in the performance history of Noh – particularly because the visual presentation of the actress’s distinctly feminine features foregrounds the materiality of the female body on the Noh stage. Desdemona’s ghost inhabits the multiple temporal and spatial configurations of the narrative as well as that of the Noh stage, allowing for a complex working-through of her trauma. The material presence of the actress intervenes in the narrative focalisation of Shakespeare’s Othello – which concludes with the effacement and silencing of Desdemona’s agency and voice through death. By fracturing the temporality of Shakespeare’s Othello narrative, this intercultural Noh performance mobilises and re-constructs the working-through of traumatised female subjectivity as taking place in the present, shifting narrative authority to Desdemona’s ghost. The narrative is now focalised through her perspective as shite, the primary character in Noh, and is articulated in her own narrative voice: she is effectively wresting her narrative voice and agency from Shakespeare’s text in this intercultural performance

    Frontmatter and Editorial

In lieu of an abstract, here is the first paragraph of the editorial: Given the new normal of fascist-oid populisms and all too familiar neoliberalism, ‘the Muslim woman’ is produced as a performative battleground of ideological and normative contradictions; as a commodity product with a rearranged voice, not an arrangeur of voicings. The AfD (Alternative for Germany) – with its gendered Islamophobic rhetoric materialized in election posters that mobilize the image of burqa-clad women to warn against the supposed Islamization of German – rose to 13% in the 2017 German parliamentary elections. Austria recently banned face-veils to make a stand against the oppression of Muslim women, relying on an all too common, ethnosexist ‘saving-brown-women-from-brown-men’ discourse (Spivak 49; Abu-Lughod 784), whilst neglecting the symbolic violence undergirding standardized body politics. In a more alarming and far reaching manner, a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice which grants employers the right to ban all religious symbols in professional settings is not only to be read as an attack on religious embodied practices and identity formations under the sign of religious neutrality, but also as a juridical precarization of Muslim headdress-wearing women, refusing to meet the coercions of mandatory assimilation (El Aabedy). Sadly enough, we have not yet moved beyond the over-significance of the veil in debates about Islam, women and gender, which makes the veil police and the no-veil police strange bedfellows. And sadly enough, such a move seems far from possible, so long as commentators like the self-declared Muslim feminist Seyran Ateş insist that veils gender and sexualize, whilst excluding embodied performances of hair-dos, make-up and the latest fashions from this line of reasoning (see Yeğenoğlu 63). What the aforementioned legislations and attitudes foreclose is what Sara Ahmed terms “a future response to an other whom I may yet approach”, an approach that does not intend to outlaw identities that I personally and affectively cannot (imagine) to live (Strange 146, Ahmed’s emphasis). The may-yet temporality of this approach helps to imagine encounters beyond the mediated histories of prejudiced sentiment – ranging from pity to disgust – and the fantasy of knowing what is best for the other
