Review: Roden, Frederick (ed.). Jewish/Christian/Queer: Crossroads and Identities. Queer Interventions

    No full text
“The power of ‘queer’ is its breadth,” writes editor Frederick Roden in his introduction to Jewish/Christian/Queer. The volume takes advantage of—and pushes the boundaries—of that wide vastness of possibility for the signifier “queer.” Although the disparity of historical and disciplinary approaches of the essays sometimes threatens to pull the collection apart at the seams, its threads never quite break. And in the end, the risk of pulling apart is worth the reward of a better garment. Few scholars will be familiar with all of the material here: it ranges from a textual analysis of Pauline scripture to a psychoanalytic reading of Freud’s relationship to Rome to an architectural and theological argument for the queerness of Queen Anne Churches, to name a few. A queer group indeed. The radical diversity of material, however, undeniably demonstrates the versatility of queer theories. Ultimately, therein lies the lasting argument of the volume: Queer theory can and should touch religious studies scholarship across discipline and material. Jewish/Christian/Queer becomes Joseph’s coat: Jewish, Christian, contested, beautiful, and queer.

    Frontmatter and Editorial

In lieu of an abstract, here is the first paragraph of the editorial:  The topicality and complexity of issues of gender and sex/uality as key factors in the political arena has become apparent in recent political elections in different parts of the world. Matters of performance are determining criteria for the successful distribution and realisation of political aims. In this context questions about re-defining the political arena arise, as the proliferation of new media platforms provides alternative possibilities for voicing political ideas and building political movements outside of the classical institutions. In accordance with the complexity of the subject, the articles in this issue of gender forum engage with the interplay of gender and politics from diverse perspectives

The Most Dangerous Presumption: Women Authors and the Problems of Writing Satire

    Get PDF
The essay discusses the question why it is that women writers are almost absent from the canon of satirical writing. While female writers have managed during the 20th Century to establish themselves in all genres of literature, satire, with very few exceptions, has remained a territory for male writers. One of the main arguments for this absence is the fact that satire is one of the most aggressive forms of humour. While the tabooisation of aggression, which to a certain extent undermines satire, also applies to male authors, the position of the female writer, already rendered precarious by its deviation from the norm, is exacerbated by her position as a satirist and as a woman. German writer Gisela Elsner (1937-1992), lately being referred to as an “older sister” to Elfriede Jelinek, has accurately described this position as a “literary ghetto.” The example of the reception of Elsner’s work demonstrates how a blocking-out of a certain female tradition of satire reveals not only the limits, but also the blind spots of feminist-leaning women’s literature studies

This thesis deals with the story “Das Fräulein von Scuderi” written by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann. The focus is not on the literary aspects, but on their con- nection with legal issues and the intention behind this ap- proach. On the one hand, the course of criminal proceedings in the 19th century is presented and compared with the depictions of the same in “Das Fräulein von Scuderi“, with a particular focus on the handling of circumstantial evidence. On the other hand, it sheds light on how the institute of incapacity has developed and how the perpetrator of the book René Cardillac could be punished in the 21st century on the basis of his behavior. It is noted that the author not only presents the literary and legal elements in his story realistically, but also skillfully interweaves them so that they can provide food for thought regarding legal practice both then and now

    Get PDF
Abstract (English): Learning to See Animals (Differently) – Aesthetic Perception of the Animal Self as a Subject of Film Education The aesthetic construction of animals in film is typically neither widely perceived nor critically examined; it also holds little prominence in film education. This article, drawing on the research framework of Cultural Animal Studies, specifically an ethical and aesthetic perspective on animal singularity (Zenker 2023), explores approaches for analyzing and reflecting on cinematic representations of animals. It centers on the cinematic staging of the animal self. From the perspective of film education, it is crucial to consider how the relationship between film aesthetics and aesthetic perception can facilitate reflections on such cinematic representations of the animal self. Using the frameworks of Ästhetische Film-Bildung (Zahn 2012) and Filmbildung im Zeichen des Fremden (Walberg 2011), the article investigates the educational potential of aesthetic approaches to fostering different ways of seeing and hearing animals in film. By examining Jerzy Skolimowski’s film EO (POL / ITA 2022), which portrays a donkey’s journey across Europe, the article illustrates the significance of the aesthetic staging of animals in German language education, providing specific teaching suggestions. &nbsp

Building the Nation: Narrating Women and the Algerian War

    Get PDF
Traditional accounts of war define it as a masculine enterprise and war narratives thus as the work of men. Such accounts have been used to justify a special role for men within the nation, as wartime experience supposedly makes them eminently qualified to be not only military but also civilian leaders. While one might begin by challenging the premise that war experience qualifies one for a special civilian status, readers of European literature have also challenged the idea that war narratives are the work of men alone. As critics rediscover and re-place women\u27s narratives of war within the canon of war literature, they have focused in particular on redrawing the boundaries between the frontlines and the home front. [...] Where women have joined in opposing colonial occupation of their homes and land, such as in the Algerian Revolution, the \u27frontline\u27 involves entire regions, and women are often in the middle of combat
